 Alex Kidd in Miracle World Review by: Totts - 9.1/10 Alex Kidd was a flagship mascot for Sega during the glory days of the Master System, the world was his oyster. Then, along came Sonic who grabbed the media attention Alex Kidd was left by the wayside .
Very few games had me pulling my hair out as much as his particularly colourful romps – the very worst culprit, of my hair pulling, being the Miracle World instalment. Equipped with fists of steel and ears of Spock, Alex must toddle along (or swim in some segments) sixteen levels of platform style tomfoolery – deciphering puzzles, smashing through walls and destroying weird-looking folk along the way. Ah, yes, it’s a traditional fare platformer alright, but Sega know the genre like the back of its hand and a super little game hides underneath it all.
Boss battles are won not by judgement, skill and finely-tuned reflexes, but by sheer luck via the form of a rock/paper/scissors game. Win two out of the three contests and it’s a victorious move onto the next stage, lose and you’re shoved back to the start of the level. Now call me a nit-picker, but isn’t that a little unfair? But, despite this, you keep on coming back for more due to the irresistible charm of it all. Alex may be wearing those dungarees and annoy you with his dinner eating after each successful level (eating rice with chopsticks) but he’s running around a little Miracle World that’s so adorable you can’t help but have another go. And another. And another!
If you have not played this game on the original system, now is a great time to do so.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World Description: Many centuries ago, on the planet Aries, there lived a boy called Alex Kidd. For seven years, he lived on Mt. Eternal studying Shellcore, an ancient art that makes one strong enough to break rocks into pieces. As he was leaving the mountain one day to travel to his spiritual homeland, a dying man told him that the peaceful city of Radactian was in grave danger. Before taking his last breath, the man gave Alex a piece of a map and a medallion made of Sun Stone.There are eleven locations in which Alex must explore, each of them has its own unique dangers. In each location, Alex can collect bags of coins, which can be used to buy items at the shop and are used to help Alex get through each location (eg: motorcycle, peticopter, power bracelet, etc.) There are also traps that Alex must avoid like the ghost that chases him. He can also collect the Telepathy Ball that will help him read people's minds.Later, Alex learns that in order to save Radactian from destruction, he must first defeat Janken the Great, Emperor of the planet Janbarik (he got his name from his expertise at the game of Janken -- or what people call "scissors, paper, stone" in the Western World. Janken has sent his henceman all over Radactian to prepare the game for Alex as he passes by them. In order to get past them, Alex must win three times at Janken. If he loses, he is turned to stone and vanished from Radactian forever. Later on in the game, Alex must play with the same henceman, but only this time, when Alex wins, they decide to play dirty.Alex uses his fists to wipe out some of Janken's enemies such as birds, sea horses, bats, monkeys, frogs, and a few others. If his quest to save Radactian from the evil hands of Janken becomes difficult, he can instead use the power bracelet to perform the "Shocking Waves of Destruction", an ancient trick in the art of Shellcore.Before Alex comes face-to-face with Janken, he should rescue his brother, Egle, from imprisonment, and get the letter and two medallions.

If you lose all your lives, have over $800, and wish to continue, hold Up on the D-Pad, and press Button 2 8 times.

I used this on the version of the game that came hard-coded into the 2nd model of Master System. It works on that version at least.
When you get the Game over screen (which happens way too often to make the game any fun...) you can continue if you hold up and hammer the 2 button about a dozen times before the game actually resets. It costs $400 to do.
Janken challenges
This is how to beat the Janken bosses when you play against them, without having to fight them if you lose.
1st: Choose Rock in the first game, then Scissors in the second
2nd: Scissors, then Paper
3rd: Rock, Scissors
4th: Paper, Paper
5th: Rock, Rock
6th: Rock, Scissors

I owned a Master System as my first system and absolutely loved this game. I remember being able to ``cheat`` on the rock paper scissors matches...not sure how successful it is on here though, but all you do is just before your choice is locked in, you get

I've Never owned a Sega Master System, My first Game system was an NES. I saw the commercials for Alex kidd and thought, "This might be better than Super Mario Brothers..." It's not, but it certainly has it's Pros and Cons.

holy damn, I remember this...i couldn't recall the name, but this is it. Game drove me insane, i mean i'm still crazy now because I played this game too much 18-20 years ago and I never recovered. Fun game, but frustrating.
