Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (AKA: The best thing since Smash Bros 4)   Uzar
There are some games that just needed to happen. Super Mario Brothers,
Professor Layton, Legend of Zelda, or perhaps a new legend...Captain
Toad Treasure Tracker.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker...It's a fantastic game, where
Nintendo realizes that Toad was their true mascot, and they embraced this
fact by giving him his very own game! Ok, sarcasm aside, time to get
(mostly) serious. It is a full game based off of four bonus levels in
Super Mario 3D World. I actually liked those bonus levels, so I was
actually pretty excited to get this game. But, if I were to slide this
under the Vizzed-Review-a-Scope how well would it look?
Graphics: 8/10
The graphics are pretty nice, even for the Wii U. But it uses all
the same textures and landscapes from Super Mario 3D World. Which is
pretty good, but, it's nothing you've never seen before. (Okay, outside a
few new enemies...) Still, you can see a rolling sky, beautiful water,
butterflies coming out of the flowers, and those weird Biddybug enemies.
It's all going to look as fantastic as you'd expect!
Sound: 9/10
Sound here is great! The voice acting is expertly done. It's crisp,
clean, and pleasing to the ears. You won't soon forget the many
screeches of Toad. The Shy Guys sound just as you'd expect them to, with
all their...I actually don't know how to spell out that sound they
make! But I'm sure you can hear it in your head now. With that aside,
the music is nice, but most levels will get to feeling pretty
repetitive. The main level theme is a remix of the Toad Brigade jingle
from Super Mario Galaxy. It's a glorious little tune, but it felt a bit
repetitive to me after a few levels. The music changes on some levels to
more fitting, or foreboding tunes. When the Toad War Song stops, things
are gonna get serious. The music is well done, the voices (in all
seriousness now) are pretty good, but, it's Toad, so don't expect
anything like Markiplier or Morgan Freeman's voices.
Addictiveness: 7/10
This game is pretty fun for both casual and intense play. It's unique gameplay will keep you coming back for more. And if that's not enough, each level has a bonus challenge! You can shoot for 100% completion and have fun doing it also. If anything; it's a extremely addicting first playthrough. It will without a doubt leave you with a smile on your face. I for one will be playing it quite often.
Story: 4/10
The story, sadly, is really weak. More time went into reasoning why
he can't jump than the actual story! So most of this score comes from
their reasoning.
Toad and his Toad Brigade, plus Toadette, are still on that quest
for Power Stars. Whether for their own personal gain, for Rosalina, or
for the good of the Mushroom Kingdom is left for debate. But they're out
there for treasure, and power stars. Upon Toad and Toadette's
collection of a power star; a giant bird, the likes of which Mario has
never faced, swoops down and steals the star, along with Toadette.
Toad's backpack is extremely heavy, so he falls off the star and can
only chase that bird down. Nintendo even admits that Toad seriously
overpacked for this trip. That backpack is so heavy he can't even jump!
But how will he navigate the tough world of the Mario Universe? Well, by
his wits of course! His big head must have a lot of brain power*!
(*Brain power to follow the controller. All brain power must be supplied
by a responsible player)
So, go forth brave Toad, treasure, glory, and the chance to beat Mario at his own story awaits!
Depth: 7/10
There's a shocking amount of depth to this game. It's a 3D puzzle
game, so there's going to be some depth by default. But there is also a
hidden object or bonus challenge to each level too! Some levels have a
bonus around finding a golden mushroom, or another gold item worth a
nice stack of coins. Others will have you taking a different route, or
defeating every enemy in the level, and some (Actually hard) stealth
challenges!
And if your Wii U has a Mario 3D World file on it, it opens up a whole bonus story too!
There's a good amount of levels, with a shifting level of depth to every one of them.
Difficulty: 6/10
This game can be simple if you're just going for the Star. But if
you're doing challenges, or trying to find the rest of your crew, you're
in for a much more challenging game. You can't jump, so the only real
strategy you have against baddies is to RUN LIKE HECK!!!! There are two
other options, but they're going to be mentioned later because of a few
reasons. But along with the baddies, each level is a puzzle on hot to
get to the Star at the top. There are obstacles like doors to random
locations, ladders, tight corridors with Shy Guys patrolling them,
blocks that move when touched, and plenty more.
Conclusion and More:
This game is half Mario 3D World and half original. There are reused
enemies from 3D World such as the Para-Biddybug, Goombas, Piranha
Plants, Boos, and the like. But there are new enemies as well such as:
Shy Guys (Not totally new, but they were never in 3D World so new to the
game engine), Flaptors, Mud Troopers, and a GIANT DRAGON!!!!
There are a small number of powerups, but a mixture of old and new.
There are Mushrooms, Turnips, 1-Up Mushrooms, Double Cherries, and the
Super Pickaxe. Mushrooms work how you'd expect, the double cherries work
the same as 3D World. But the Turnips you pull from the ground and
throw at enemies like in Super Mario Bros 2. The Super Pickaxe lets you
fulfill your Minecrafting dreams and swing a mighty pickaxe at foes and
blocks alike! Breaking and or opening them up.
Captain Toad is a great game all in all. It's a fun twist from a
normal Mario game. And it's a pretty decent standalone title too. What
it lacks in story it makes up for in fun and gameplay.
