Hey, vizzed members! This time I’m reviewing an NES version of Pac-Man, the Tengen Unlicensed version to be specific. This dot-and-ghost-chomping classic has so many different versions, a good amount of which I’ve played, that I had to review at least one of them. This version was released in 1987, developed by Namco and published by Tengen.

Have fun reading about the game!

GRAPHICS

9.8/10

It’s a simple game with simple graphics. And NES games generally have simple graphics anyway, so that fits well. The title screen is a black background with the Pac-Man logo on top, and then aside from the arrow pointing to which player mode you want, the rest is just text. There isn’t too much going on or too little. If this was an expansive 3D game that would be lame, but this is a basic 2D game.

All the colors in the maze fit well with each other. None of them are too bright or too dark, even the pellets which, in the original game, were white. I prefer the dark yellow dots this game has, and I think it’s cool that they match Pac-Man! Pac-Man’s dark yellow color wouldn’t go well with the white since normally he is a brighter yellow.

The maze isn’t near as wide as the original game, but that’s fine. It is still similar enough.

Sadly, I couldn’t rate this category a 10 because Pinky looks more like light purple than Pink.

ANIMATIONS

10/10

Since nothing is miscolored in the animations, this gets a 10. Everything transitions smoothly and Pac-Man’s chomping is consistent. The ghosts blink for only a short time before they return to normal. The fruits appear out of nowhere like they’re supposed to, instead of fading in. That would be so weird and not cool.

When you sit on the title screen for too long, it takes you to a screen introducing the ghosts. Instead of showing everything at once, it shows the ghosts one at a time until they are all on the screen. This screen is necessary in my opinion because it shows the ghosts’ names and the amount of points everything is worth except the fruits. After it shows the ghosts, it shows a quick animation of all 4 ghosts chasing Pac-Man, and then he grabs a ghosteater pellet and eats them all! That kind of animation is also in the game Super Pac-Man!

The cutscenes resemble the original game perfectly. They make me want to laugh and they don’t get old to watch! They don’t leave you asking a bunch of questions and they aren’t meant to be taken seriously.

SOUND EFFECTS

10/10

Waka-waka! I actually used my imagination and heard that while listening to the pause sound. Every sound is fitting
and even though it’s the same sounds in each level, it’s more than just tolerable. If the game’s sounds were any different, this wouldn’t be one of my favorite versions of Pac-Man.

I get hyped when I hear the ghosteater pellet’s sound as the blue ghosts try to run (float?) away from a brutal chomp. Every other sound effect doesn’t make me cringe either, so I’d say they’re perfect.

MUSIC

10/10

I really like how the music sounds with the NES instruments, mainly in the startup song. The same goes for the song that plays in the cutscenes. The startup song allows for a nice transition and feeling of excitement as you prepare to play. Also, the cutscene music is funny and it allows for the scenes to go along with it.

STORY

0/10

I keep reviewing all the games with no story, don’t I… Pac-Man Party is the only Pac-Man game I’ve played that has a story. So yeah, there’s no story but there is an objective (which is always important no matter what game you play). Your goal is to chomp all of the dots in the maze while avoiding the ghosts. Also, in order to get a good high score, it’s highly recommended that you eat the ghosts using the ghosteater pellets in the first 4 levels at least.

DEPTH

10/10

The game is basic but super long. I have played Pac-Man games for 10 years but I guarantee you I will never beat every level without extensive savestate usage.

You have multiple things to do in your mission also: eat dots, eat ghosts, eat fruits, and don’t die. …What’s so funny?

ADDICTIVENESS

10/10

I’d say it isn’t normal for someone to play a Pac-Man game, or any basic game like this, for many years. I would certainly play it every week if I wasn’t addicted to other video games too! I used to play the NES version of Pac-Man almost every day.

DIFFICULTY

8/10

I’ve had so many moments where Pac-Man becomes Whack-Man, slamming into ghosts because he got ghost-corner’d. (If you’ve read all my reviews and screenshots recently, you’d notice that ghost-corner’d is a running gag. I’m lame for pointing that out.)

Unless you have a planned strategy for how you’re going to move through the level, and you know where the ghosts are going to go, you won’t get extremely far. But don’t be discouraged! The ghosteater pellets are there to bump the rating from 10 to 8. As long as they don’t magically disappear from the maze, which they won’t, you have those to use in order to save yourself from getting ghost-trap’d (new running gag).

Basically, if you plan your movements carefully and utilize the ghosteater pellets well, you’ll most likely accomplish any goals you have. But you also have to keep in mind that Pac-Man’s speed increases on certain levels, such as 2 and 4. I unexpectedly got really far just by trying hard to repeat a pattern and have a backup for when I bump the wrong arrow key.

OVERALL (not counting story)

9.7/10

If it wasn’t for Pinky not being quite pink this would be even closer to a 10. Come on, Pinky! Get a paint job! Oh, sorry, you’re not a car.

This game was a big part of my childhood, just like multiple versions of Pac-Man. It gets better the more I play it and I don’t have to get a high score to have fun. I recommend this game for anyone who likes a challenge that’s simple to learn. I also recommend this for people that like mazes, but don’t like them very much.

Thank you for reading this review and have a nice day!
