Mega Man is an iconic game franchise. In fact, Mega Man is often regarded as one of the more popular franchises of all time. In many gaming sites he is often ranked #2 only behind Mario. It should come as no surprise that several hacks have been made of Mega Man. But this hack is different. The player gets to play as Mega Man and Proto Man's little sister Roll. So I will be comparing Roll-Chan I to the original Mega Man I.

Story: 9

The story in Roll-Chan is great even though it was changed from the original game somewhat. Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are two of the world's geniuses on Robotics and engineering. They work together and create robots to help mankind. All goes well until Dr. Wily decides to take over the world for his own greed and power. Wily reveals how he wants to rule the world with a robot army. He reprograms the robots except for 3, Protoman, Rock (Mega Man) and Roll. Protoman, who has a strong sense of justice, went out on his own. Rock is turned into the fighting robot Mega Man. Roll is also programmed into the fighting robot Roll-Chan. Dr. Light sends Roll out to stop the carnage. He has her brother Mega Man on standby in case she needs backup.

Okay, I really liked the change of the story. Sometimes hacks change the story and it is way off, thankfully this is not the case. I think the changed plot introduces the characters well. In addition, it also keeps a lot of the original plot Dr. Wily using the robots to take over the world reveals that he wants to rule the world. The only difference is Roll is also changed into a fighting robot. Overall I give the plot or story a solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 7

The Original Mega Man I had nice background and colors to it. However, the original game was known for its lags, being glitch, and mediocre controls. So how does Roll Chan I compare. Well there were some improvements but still the game had its issues. First of all like the original game the colors and backgrounds are great. I really like the color in some of the stages. I also like how the sprites have been improved especially when changing weapons. Also some of the glitches have been fixed from the original game. On the other hand, the game retained its lags that the first game had. Why did the maker of this game be able to fix the glitches and sprites but not the lags. Maybe it was due to their software.

The controls are not as mediocre as they were in the first game. But they still had some issues. It does feel like at times the controls are still a little stiff. Not as bad as the first game. In some stages the controls are smooth like future Mega Man games had. In other stages they are stiff. It makes me wonder if the maker of this hack was trying to fix the controls of this game but could not do it for every stage. Overall, I think the controls were better than the original game but still had issues. Thus, I give the graphics and controls a 7 out of 10.

Sound: 8

The original game had decent sound to it. Elec Man, Fire Man and Ice Man are my favorite themes in this game. The sound was left unchanged from the original game. But what is different is the tingles are gone. The first game had some memorable tunes but sometimes you would get tingling that has been corrected. I also like how the sounds have been left unchanged. Roll's Buster sounds like Mega Man's buster. Enemies shots sound powerful and so does your weapons. I give the sound a good solid 8 out of 10.

Replay Value: 7

Roll Chan was a fun game to play and it offers something different. I also had more fun playing this game than I did the original Mega Man 1. The original game had its fun moments but that games issues made it irritating to play at times. With some of the issues being corrected this one is more enjoyable and not near as irritating.  I like having the ability to play as Roll that is a bonus and it seems like it offers something new. So yeah, 7 out of 10 sounds right.

Depth: 6

The original Mega Man I had some depth but not the standard depth the Mega Man franchise would become infamous for.  Still, Roll Chan did have some depth to it. In fact it was left unchanged from the original game. A lot of the stages are long that drives up the depth. There is also a secret item to be found in this game so that adds depth. In addition, you can revisit the stages if you do not have a certain item to get the secret. Its just that the game does not have the depth that future Mega Man games or even hacks had. So taking that into consideration I give Roll Chan a 6 out of 10.

Difficulty: 8

The difficulty in this game was easier to rate than the Original Mega Man I. Mega Man I was just brutal in terms of difficulty. However, it was difficult mainly for the wrong reasons. What made the original game difficult, was the glitches and lags. In the first game you could land on a platform then suddenly fall through it. Also enemies would glitch back in after killing them. Mega Man I also had some difficulty for the right reason mainly pits, spikes and enemy placement.

This game felt like it was mostly difficult for the right reasons. Some of the stage layouts can be frustrating at times. Also just about every stage has its traps and cheap shots. Moreover, the enemies will just gang up on you or attack in numbers. Now the game's lags can add to the difficulty making the game difficult in that sense for the wrong reason. Overall though compared to the first game this one is difficult but not off the charts. You will die a lot in this game but once you get the hang of it and know were the traps are its more manageable. Therefore, I give the game a solid 8 out of 10. It is difficult but doable.

Overall Rating 8.0

This was a great hack and a decent game to play. I really had fun playing this one and I will do it again. Roll Chan I had a lot going for it. With that being said the game did have some issues. But before I get into the negatives I will start with the positives.

First of all, I really liked having the ability to play as Roll. I have always thought that in the original series Roll should have been an option in future games and I her character expanded more. Mostly in the original series she is a lab robot who creates parts for her brothers Mega Man and Proto Man. So having the ability to play as Roll adds something new while keeping the original Mega Man franchise feel. I also like how the plot was changed to introduce Roll as a playing character. The graphics are mostly good. I was glad they fixed the glitches from the first game that was a huge bonus. I also like how the sprites change when Roll switches weapons very nicely done. I also think the difficult was mostly right for the right reasons.

Now like the original Mega Man I this game did have some issues. The game still lags and that can still be a problem. Some of the lags will get you hit by an enemy or knocked off into a pit or on death spikes. The maker of this hack fixed the glitches and semi fixed the controls. So why could he or she not fix the lags. As I stated under the graphics section maybe it was due to the software they were using or game engine. Also, the controls while better still appear to be stiff in some stages. They were an improvement from the first game where every stage had stiff controls at some point. This game it is only certain stages. I feel like the maker was trying to fix the controls with what they had but could not do it 100%. Also there are still times were the sound tingles not as bad as the original game but it is still there. The depth was the same as the original game. It would not be till Mega Man 2 that the standard of depth for Mega Man games would be set.

Overall I give Roll Chan I an solid 8 out of 10. Despite the games issues it was a huge improvement over the original Mega Man I. To me this is what the first game should have been like. Instead it had glitches, lags, tingles, not so great controls and other frustrating things. That is why it is often said that Mega Man 2 put the series on the map and established Mega Man as an Icon. I was glad to see how the maker or makers fixed some of those problems that the original game had.

Would I recommend this game. Yes I would mostly recommend this game. Its a fun hack to play and offers something new. This game is difficult but doable. It is not like the first game that might turn players off that are new to Mega Man games. The game does have frustrating parts to it. So if a person is very new to Mega Man this might not be a good game to start them off with. But if you like challenges, hacks, something new, and something different than this game is for you. So yeah, I would recommend this game if you have played Mega Man games before. I really had fun playing it. I cannot wait to sew what the other Roll Hacks of Mega Man are like.

Anyway Blessings in Christ and happy gaming
