Mega Man 2 is the game that made Mega Man into a video game icon. It is also the game that started Mega Man mania. Mega Man would go onto to become and still is one of the video games most popular icon. So it should be no surprise they are several hacks of Mega Man 2 out there. This hack is different as you do not play as Mega Man instead you play Mega Man's rival Bass. Thus, I will be comparing this hack to the original game.

Story: 10

Unlike other Mega Man hacks this one has a different story. Bass, who was created by Dr. Wily defeated all of Dr. Lights robots. I guess this means that Bass defeated Mega Man and Proto Man. Anyway back to the story. Dr. Light decided he would get revenge on Bass and Dr. Wily. He steals Dr. Wily's plans for new Robot Masters. Dr. Light builds 8 new robot masters and sends them after Bass for revenge. Dr. Wily sends Bass out to defeat Dr. Lights new robots.

Okay I'm usually not a fan of hacks or remakes changing the story. However this one shows if your going to change the story do it right. This is the right way to change the story. I love how they remade the story. I found it was creative to give the story from a bad guys perspective and switch the rolls. Bass is playing the role of Mega Man, Wily is playing the role of Light, and Light is playing the roll Wily. I really liked that as it shows creativity. You can also tell whoever made this spent a lot of time into making it. In addition, I also like it how they kept the characters personalities. Bass is out to prove he is the strongest and most powerful robot ever built. Even though Wily sent him out he still maintains some independence. Dr. Light is creating new robots to defeat Wily and Bass. Overall, changing the plot was nicely done. I give it a perfect 10 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

For this to be a hack the graphics are amazing. The backgrounds and colors have been changed from the original Mega Man 2 game. But it still looks amazing the colors seem to fit the stages very well. Also the backgrounds are nicely done. The stage layouts have been significantly altered to increase the difficulty that was also a nice touch. The sprites are close to the original game. Bass uses Mega Man's sprites which is alright considering they are rivals and are supposed to be similar to each other. The only negative I have is there is a few glitches here and there. They are times were an enemy will get stuck under a platform and not be able to move its very funny. When the enemies do this they don't really pose a threat to you they just look silly. There is one glitch I noticed that if can cause you to miss a jump and fall into a pit that one is tricky. But once you know where it is at you can get around it.

The controls are amazing and nicely done. The controls do not appear to lag or change speeds. I have played some hacks where the controls are just okay or terrible. I would say this hack uses the same controls as the original. Thus, I give the graphics and controls a very solid 9 out of 10.

Sound: 9

The sounds where left unchanged from the original game. I was glad they did not change the sounds because Mega Man 2 had awesome sounds. The stage music is very nice and fitting for the stages. Woodman's music is my favorite sound track from Mega Man 2. Other stage themes are nice to listen to. Buster shots still make their sound to let you know your shots are hitting the target. Enemy shots are still the same letting you know they mean business. The reason I give this a 9 and not a 10 is because there are a few Mega Man games that have better music. I really think Mega Man 7, V, IV, 4,3, 5 and 6 had better music. Those games are just special. Still this is very good and it deserves a very high rating.

Replay value: 8

This game was fun and I really enjoyed playing it. It was nice to get to play as a different character with their own story. It was also nice getting to see the plot from a different perspective. Most Mega Man games either have Mega Man fighting the forces of Dr. Wily. This one you play as Bass to defeat robot masters. Even though this is a hack it made me feel like I was playing a different game. To me that is special and shows how good of quality this hack is. I will certainly be playing this one again. It offers something new and different what more can I say.

Depth: 8

This hack also kept the tradition of Mega Man games having lots of depth to them. I have played Mega Man Hacks that seem to cut down on the amount of depth. Stages take awhile to complete and you have to go quite a bit to reach the checkpoint. Also they are secrets in this game to get power ups and items. The thing is you better explore every stage carefully because unlike other Mega Man games you cannot revisit the stage. I would say the depth is pretty close to the original Mega Man 2. In some cases it seems they might have extended some of the stages to make them longer. I really like games that have a lot of depth it adds to the game's value.

Difficulty: 8

This game was pretty hard the first time I played it. The original Mega Man 2 was probably a 6 out of 10. While the original version was tricky, once you got the hang of it; it did not seem so bad. This one does not have that impression. The game ups the difficulty from the original. However, the game is difficult for the right reasons.

The main thing about this game in terms of difficulty is the pits. Yes, pits are numerous in this game. You will most likely fall into a pit sometime or another while playing this game. I found this to be the most difficult part of the game. Even when I replayed it the pits still gave me trouble. A lot of times you have to make a precise move or into the pit you go. To make matters worse enemies just seem to be right near pits. The enemies just love to send you down to your doom in this game. The enemies for the most part are like Mega Man 2 they take a few shots to take down. The problem is as I stated they are near pits or in numbers. The Robot Masters attacks have been sped up a little bit. This makes dodging the robot master attacks a little more difficult than the original game.

While the game is difficult and you will most likely die a few times playing this game. It is not unbearable. Once I got the hang of it I started to die less. On the other hand the pits can still make this game harder as you have little margin for error in jumping. So its difficult but doable. This game does not bury you like some of the other Mega Man hacks or original games. It seems like this one test your skills, your reflexes, and creativity to get past it. I really like games that challenge you like that. So at the end of the day I give the game a difficulty of 8 out of 10.

Overall: 9

I'm going to go ahead and say it this is one of the better hacks I have played. I have played a lot of hacks some good ones and some very bad ones. I will certainly say this one ranks pretty high. The game keeps the original feel to the classic series. On the other hand the game offers something new. I think the maker or makers of this game where aiming at that and it shows. I can tell this game took a lot of time and effort to make.

I really like how they re-did the plot and how you get to play as Bass. As I have stated several times that offers something different and new. I was excited to play as Bass. I hope more hacks will be done where players can play as him. The controls and sound was nicely done. I really like the new colors that were used.

Now as expected there where a few issues. The glitch brings the rating down a little bit. I have found two really noticeable glitches in this game. The first one makes the enemies get trapped under you, they cannot hurt you in that position, and it makes them look silly. I thought it was comical still its a glitch. The most troubling glitch is the one that can cause you to miss a jump and send you to your doom. To get past that glitch I had to do a double jump. Once you know were it occurs its less of a big deal. Still, it will catch you off guard a few times. That is really the only negatives I have in this game.

Overall I give the game a solid 9 out of 10. This game pretty much resembles the original Mega Man 2 except your playing as a different character. The game offers a new perspective and something different. One can forget they are playing a hack of Mega Man 2. The issues that this game has is very minor. Most gamers will probably not be bothered by those. Would I recommend this game? Yes I would I think this game is great for everybody. Even new players could probably get the hang of it. While the game is difficult its doable. It does not bury you as some of the other hacks or games. So I hope you enjoy playing this hack as I did. It is a good one.

Blessings in Christ and happy gaming.
