Due to the success of Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS, Nintendo wanted to make another title in the "3D" series of games. This title is called Super Mario 3D World and it was released for the Wii U on November 21, 2013. Was it any good? Let's find out.
Graphics: 10Being on the first fully HD console, Super Mario 3D World's graphics are phenomenal. Heck, I even adore the backgrounds, and I don't pay attention to backgrounds a lot. My favorite background in the game has to be that one with the nice sunset. It looks AMAZING. All the models in this game are clean to the max. Every single one of them. This game looks amazing.
Sound: 9The music in this game is also very good. Each song fits whatever settings you're in and what scenario is taking place. I find Super Mario 3D World to have a broader soundtrack than Super Mario 3D Land, and I like this one more than the original. The original mostly had these weird trumpet sounding things that I hated. I don't hear them in this game, which is good. There's not really a lot more I can say with this category.
Addictiveness: 9Super Mario 3D World is the most addicting Mario game I have ever played. No matter how many lives I lose, I keep coming back to try and beat the level I'm stuck on. Seriously, I lost 50 lives in one level before. This game can get really hard. It's also more fun with multiple players. This is the first 3D Mario game in the series where you can play with multiple people at once, and it does it pretty well. It's a lot of fun! I also enjoy looking around for the collectibles, but we'll get more into that in the Depth section of this review.
Story: 4
This is, by far, my least favorite story in any Mario game to ever exist. I despise it so much. Mario games aren't known for having intricate stories, and this game is no different. However, they introduced new characters in this game, Sprixies. The story is that Bowser kidnapped the Sprixies and you need to save them all. They wouldn't be so bad if they weren't SO FREAKIN' ANNOYING. I hate them soooo much. They are just an excuse to be able to play as Peach in this game, it's ridiculous. I'm giving this section a 4 because Mario games aren't really known for epic stories or anything.
Depth: 9This game has a lot of depth to it, and I think it's the most depth in a Mario game that I've seen. There are several collectibles in almost every level, and there are bonus levels scattered across the maps. Most of the levels each contain 3 green stars and 1 stamp. If you're going for 100% completion, you also need to get all gold flagpoles in all the levels. There is a TON to do in this game, and I love it to death.
Difficulty: 8Like I said above earlier, this game can get really hard depending on where you are in the game. The game is really simple from around World 1 to World 3, when it starts getting a bit harder. Then from World 4 to the last world of the main game, it gets pretty tense. The extra levels after that are HARD. Like, really hard. As I said, I once lost 50 LIVES just because of ONE level. Imagine the pain I was going through. Yeah, if you die in a level enough the game basically gives you a free invincibility with the Golden Leaf. However, I refuse to use that, because it's the cheapest thing in the history of anything ever.
Overall: 9Super Mario 3D World is a fan favorite from what I've seen. Yeah, the Sprixies are the most annoying thing ever and I want to kill them all, but everything else in the game is pure fun. This is probably the most fun I've had with a Mario game, and I'm tempted to say that it's my favorite in the series. I'm not sure if it is, but if not, then it's pretty close. I definitely recommend Super Mario 3D World for any owner who just wants to play a really fun game.
