Metro Last Light is a first-person shooter that has some clever ideas and for the most part, succeeds quite well at what it sets out to do. This is a game that foremost, is top of the class for setting mood. Not since Bioshock have I played a first-person this great at being mindful of its tone to create a captivating, if depressing, alternate history of Russia. Is it better or similar to Fallout? Yes and no. Both have fallen governments, and reward different play styles, and mutated beasts and evil men. Fallout is vast, open world, and Metro here is still quite a bit on rails in where you go (literally in some cases). Fallout at times seems too easy, while Metro is often a desperate struggle and is in fact, tense and frightening-something I never felt in Fallout. A game where your ammo can be limited, and you're not sure if the bribed sentries will betray you or what abomination will come out of the shadows as you make your way. Fallout has way more to do, but Metros world was far more interesting to me, because you feel very small and at times, powerless. This is a sequel game to Metro 2033, but its a lot more fun and more polished.

The monsters can be quite horrific, especially if one jumps out at you unexpectedly. Lighting is one of the strongest aspects of this game, and is well used, as a hindrance (enemy monsters and soldiers use light to find you), or a boon (some underground monsters hate brightness). The guns also have good models, and look like the refurbished, tattered things they are. Characters are big and look great, but also recycled heavily. There is not a lot of female characters (and sadly only one major one) and its disappointing when you see the same short-haired woman used 3 or 4 times in a town.

Sound: 7
There is a lot of neat, ambient sound both when in the dark tunnels of the metro substations and out in the blasted, radiated wasteland of the surface world. The monsters each make their own growls and howls, by the end of the game, i was recognizing Watchmen (feral, mutant dog things) calls long before I saw them. One can play this game in a Splinter-Cell stealth type way, and sound becomes even more important when you have to take down guards with little fuss.

Addictiveness: 8
I really liked the mood and setting of this game. The level design is also very clever. Its not just a bunch of run-and-gun type stages, you have a wide variety, and new gear and monsters pop up to keep it fresh.  There are vehicle stages, find the item, rescue missions, escape stealth-types, and boss battles. All of the stages are handled well. If this was open-world like Fallout, I think I'd love it even more. But the story is well served by how your movements prevent rapid travel or short-cutting.

Story: 8
Strangely, the story is best at the beginning, and gets slightly weaker the more you go. I know this sounds like it shouldn't get an 8, but no, it is a good story, its just the inclusion of the dark-one I didn't really like very much at the end.
Just to give a quick summary, In this game you are looking for the last living Dark One, an alien-looking being whose whole race you might have accidentally destroyed right before the game starts in a cut scene from the first game (whoops). You will see how while humanity clings to survival in the underground tunnels, fighting off not just starvation and lack of oxygen to explore the surface, but the feral monsters in the tunnels and different militant parties (there is even a group of Nazi bad guys, like literally, they want to be the new Nazi). The people you meet are interested and each has their own motives.

Depth: 5
There are a lot of collectible documents, and achievements that would require you to start from the beginning of the game, and two endings, but there is not much to do once you beat the story. The nature of the stages being mostly undergrounds means following the tracks and way-station rooms, so there is not a lot to branch out. There is a lot of different weapons, but once I found 3 I liked (you can hold 3 ), I kept them for almost the whole game. The boss fights are a bit of disappointment, many of them use crude charge attacks and are fairly simple to beat.

Difficulty: 7
This is easier than the actual, first Metro game, but still include options for how hard you wish it to be. You can full survival mode, and get much less ammo and air filters (for not dying out in the open world), and finding med-packs are much more difficult.  There are some sub-weapons you get that make the game pretty easy though, and human foes you can scavange their ammo and air masks.

This is a good game with an A+ in setting, in fact, I would recommend one play Last Light first instead of the original Metro. You might be a little lost in the beginning as to the story, but this is a much smoother ride in terms of gameplay, and difficulty spikes. I was disappointed in how the only major female flips her whole opinion of you so quickly, and also a strange situation involving an adult club that really feels out of place. The weapons, while you can test in the beginning of the stage, some feel unimportant. I also wish the bosses were better.
