The PS4 Pro has come out, and it's not looking very pretty. Most PS4 Pro patched games are running considerably worse than their base PS4 counterparts, and those that run the same or better aren't aiming for 4k. On top of this, there are serious heat issues. It runs really loudly, and needs to be in a very open space to avoid overheating and melting. I don't see a console being able to live for very long under this sort of heat generation.

I'm honestly not sure what Sony was thinking. They increased GPU power by roughly 2.3x, and then overclocked the CPU by 1ghz. Overclocking only goes so far, and I'm speaking from experience. The original PS4 had a CPU bottleneck too, but it wasn't too bad. They greatly widened the bottleneck, meaning that any game that uses the CPU in any large capacity is going to have mediocre performance. They should've just made the system $500 and thrown in a new CPU. It might have actually had a chance for decent 4k performance then.

As it stands, it performs worse than the regular PS4, and has overheating problems. I'd suggest waiting for a few months to see if it gets fixed, or if you're better off waiting for the Scorpio to get your console 4k gaming fix

after like 5 fail products, i can not trust Sony anymore. No man Sky was handled badly, samsung almost killed people, VR didn't do much for gaming, The Last Guardian is so delayed, and now PS4 pro is awful.

Sony its time to stop

Well, it's not the first time I've seen the most elitist thing money can buy in a certain sector has overheating problems (looking straight at you, Ferraris that used to catch fire when driving around normally).

I can tell the regular PS4 already has overheating problems, even those times I place it in an open space. Looks like the problem is on the manufacturing, then, and since the PS4 in steroids brings gaming to a higher level then the problems are also brought to a higher level.

What Sony was thinking is easy: make a more powerful console to attract PC gamers. However, if they use the regular PS4 as springboard and it had some problems lessened because of performance not taken to extremes, something goes terribly wrong.

The main question here is: how the hell did they make early tests so as to not notice these problems? Right now, the answer seems like they didn't make such tests and simply released it because Christmas was coming up. Try to rebuke this theory, Sony.

Are 100% of the PS4 Pros having these problems?
I recall the PS3 having a problem with the cheap solder they used, same with the original xbox 360.
It didn't happen to all of them, but you never really were sure if it would happen to yours...

Double post, but whatever.

mastergame :
What do those other products have to do with Sony?
I am pretty sure Sony has nothing to do with Samsung, No Man's Sky, or the limited usage of VR.

Vanelan : As far as I can tell, every console is having these issues. Seems to generally be poorly built and underpowered. Damn shame, too

Interesting. This sounds like a developer problem to me, as I've heard nothing but glowing reviews about the pro from most devs and review sites. The only issue I've heard is that the 4K setting on TLOU Remastered has some lag at 60fps. This is news to me, and I read articles everyday. Lol

Is this the only game you've heard of this from? I wonder why none of my sources have been reporting it.

Vanelan : this -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony

"In December 2011, Sony agreed to sell all stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics for about $940 million.[36] On 28 March 2012, Sony Corporation and Sharp Corporation announced that they have agreed to further amend the joint venture agreement originally executed by the parties in July 2009, as amended in April 2011, for the establishment and operation of Sharp Display Products Corporation ("SDP"), a joint venture to produce and sell large-sized LCD panels and modules.[37]"

So ya, they are kinda responsible for the phones catching on fire.

no man's sky publishing and promotional was Sony reasonability -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Man%27s_Sky

"The title was developed over three years by a small team at Hello Games with promotional and publishing help from Sony Interactive Entertainment."

Lastly VR did nothing for gaming:

Prime example of why I would never buy something just as soon as it comes out. Remember the Toyotas with the sticky throttle, faulty brakes and you couldn't even force to neutral or turn the car off? How about the spontaneously combusting Nissan Leaf? Exploding Samsungs.... That list goes on. The other reason is that we're dead broke, but that's beside the point.

mastergame : The LCDs weren't why the phones were catching fire. It was the batteries.

If the dev promises features for No Man's Sky, I dunno if you can blame the publisher.

And to quote your own article:
"PlayStation VR is simply the best virtual reality headset you can buy right now. "
Blaming a single company for the lack of VR support seems ludicrous. Devs need to make VR games that don't suck to make VR "do something" for gaming.

Vanelan : they could have also made the batteries, we don't know any other business deals behind closed scenes.

True the developer did some bad things but sony never bothering to look into the video and fixing ASA guidelines which is kinda lame on their part.

When I say it doesn't offer anything to gaming, it really doesn't, remember these:

You are playing the same thing as a wii but you are closer to the screen, you can't move with Playstation VR like other headsets, almost all their games are in demo, and it is aim more to people who like japan culture then gaming.

mastergame :
That's a bit absurd to say that... you're reaching at this point to even make that kind of claim...

All the VR headsets use the same kinda controls. Seems like you are just looking for things to blame Sony on.

Where have you been? The PS4's line-up is very RPG (mostly JRPG) heavy... a large number of those games being anime styled.
As for the VR line-up, basically everything is very unrefined or in "beta" stage.
Look at 90% of the VR games on steam... they look like something out of The Lawnmower Man.

I just looked again. It seems the PS4 Pro issues are actually due to the televisions. Only newer ones can support it, and anything older can actually give you a black screen, flickering, etc. I think it's something to do with the HDMI ports. PS4 Pro uses HDMI 2.0, and many older televisions don't have a 2.0 port, so it's wise to check yours before buying.

So far that's all I've seen on it. I haven't exactly looked for it though, that just turned up in my news feed the yesterday. I hope that's the whole issue, because it'd be a shame if it was the Pro, though it's doubtless something that'll be worked out.

EDIT: Now it's being reported that the new firmware update may be the issue. Apparently it ran fine for many with 4.0 but 4.05 caused some to glitch out? Idk.

One of the best things about buying consoles is the warranty. So long as you don't modify it, or cause the damage through mishandling, things like this are covered. Just about all of them come with at least a 1 year warranty, usually with the option of purchasing a longer one (for a decent price, around $15 per year added or so) that extends to 3 - 5 years. It may be a little different now, since I haven't bought any of the "current gen" devices, but that's something I always considered a wise investment.

I had a PS2 Slim where the disc-reading laser burnt out. I shipped it in to be repaired (which Sony paid for the shipping), and after I got it back under 2 weeks later, it never died again. They must have went the extra mile, because I could leave it on running a game for WEEKS at a time, and it never even hinted at a malfunction since.

Just wanted to throw out there that from my own experience, Sony's customer service and their handling of a situation like this was very well done in the past.

Overclocking anything basically turns that device into a time bomb. Plus that 4.5 BS is not helping Sony, being released shortly after the PS4. All makers suffer from this, remember the red ring of death? Here is hoping they learn something, make them better and offer the people that bought the defective units a replacement.

Eirinn : performance has nothing to do with the display. It's not entirely the devs faults either, though it would be great if they could learn to actually optimize. Most games that aim for 4k actually suffer from performance issues. It's more to do with hardware than optimization for 4k, I think. Doesn't help that most devs pushing 4k prefer downsampling to native 1080p/60fps. Downsampling is good, but 1080p/60fps is much better

As for your sources, most gaming publications get paid to shill. GameInformer is surprisingly unbiased, especially considering it's owned by GameStop. Eurogamer is also fantastic, and their Digital Foundry is great at looking for graphics and performance in games

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
