In Sweden where I live, cooking classes are a part of our school curriculum. Meaning that even though most kids don't actively cook they should have some basic knowledge. Myself included, having to take these classes since middle school up until 9th grade. I'm almost never the person to cook at home but thanks to those classes I still have a fairly decent knowledge to the point where I'm not completely helpless when forced to do so.

I'm not sure how different the situation is in other countries though which is why I thought this would be an interesting question. Do you know how to cook? Before you answer keep in mind by that I mean actually cook using several ingredients. Not something simple like preparing instant noodles or using a microwave which any grown functioning person can do

lol was this thread inspired by my baking one that you replied on? Yes I do know how to cook. I'm not just talking about boiling pasta. But actually am able to cook most foods like my culture both for English and Nigerian food. If my mother can not refill the freezer full of food then its my job too. I don't need to be told I just do it because its the right thing. I've always loved cooking ever since I was young since then I have been growing my skills for that to hunger and see what else I can explore and to try and cook.

If I don't cook then when I get a boyfriend eventually, and marry him. What kind of house wife would I be if I don't know how to cook? '-'

Eniitan : A little bit yes It was really an old thread idea I had that I forgot to use though, your thread made me remember it and since no one had made it already I figured why not make it a thread.

I really am interested to see what people have to say. I know even here where most kids do have to take cooking classes, a lot of people end up either relying on others to cook for them or simply end up eating a lot of store bought food. I was wondering if that's the case in other countries, maybe even more so since people may never have to go through classes like that hence I made this.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to cook. I would love to learn so that I can make my own meals, but I don't have anyone to teach me unfortunately.

I love cooking. There's something about the creation of dishes from a bunch of raw ingredients over fire that really brings a sense of pride in me.

I love to explore the different types of food, like how Spanish onions are different from yellow onions are different from others onions, and they all have their own flavor, their own addition, and they fit in different places with different cuisines.

I love when the kitchen is full of aromas of sautéed onions and garlic, boiling rosemary, thyme and basil. Ginger and soy sauce come together for a variety of fish dishes and the smells blanket the house.

I love the way different meats respond to different temperatures on the grill or the oven or the range. Pork and chicken sizzle away, steak slow-cooks from inside out and fish pops and struts in the tin foil.

Some of my most prideful moments in life are delivering plates of perfection to my family and friends. I'm always in kitchens during larger family events, I'm in the middle of the food prep while everyone else socializes or plays games or drinks and talks and watches football. I mash the potatoes, I butter the buns, I do the work and I love it.

Cooking is fun. Cooking is all about the feel of the craft. It's amazing what I can do after twenty years of practice.

Zlinqxthecooluser™: Ah. I see glad to know it helped out a little bit. I'm sure you will get various of replies here people who can cook while some who can't. Usually for the freezer I make like a giant pot of food this can feed up to....10-20 people I pack it away in a Chinese container put the name on, and freeze it. So when I want to eat it I can take it out the day before so it deforests to room temperature, and warm the food up lol. Its so much simpler. I am happy with the way I can cook. But, I feel that I still have a long way to go in the area. I don't know why I feel that but, its true in a sense of way. There are so many other things to explore, and cook and I wouldn't just stop at 2 cultures. I would want to learn as many as I can. So then when I want to make the meal for myself, or to make for my family I would make it easily.

I don't know how to cook. I wish I did, though. I would know how to cook by now probably if we had enough money to actually get the supplies to teach me to cook.

I do know how to cook some things, and I always wanted to learn how, but for some reason I just can't get myself motivated to do so. It's a shame too because (and I'm speaking without partiality since she can't see this, and I've eaten at tons of social functions with friends and family) my mom is seriously the best cook I have ever met, so I could learn a lot if I just tried. However my mind stays too caught up with other things to focus on learning to cook.

But yeah, I can make some things, and I'm fairly decent at what I do make. I'm not a chef by any means though.

I can cook some pretty basic dishes, but I'm by no means a gourmet chef.

I took some really basic cooking lessons in school as an elective one year, though the school ended up dropping the program altogether maybe a year or two after I went through it. More than anything, I can follow recipes really well. As long as I have a detailed recipe on how to put a dish together, I can pretty much put anything that's not complex together really well. Outside of that, or baking, since I've done quite a bit of that helping my mom over the years, I'm only good with a lot of breakfast dishes as I've had quite a bit of practice making them.

I can cook some things but always with an adult is in the kitchen. I will type some that I know so others can use if they don't know already. Put bacon in the oven in a long cake pan and cook at 400 degrees until done is good way to make a lot at once and not burn you with grease splatter. I can make scrambled eggs or French toast or waffles or grilled cheese. I can also make a few soups if I have help cutting up some ingredients or opening any canned stuff like tomatoes. Boiled eggs are easy just boil for a minute then put lid on turn off heat and let sit for 20 min. Then dump the hot water and fill pan with ice water until they are cold. I don't like peeling them though because sometimes big chunks fall off if I'm not careful. I can make pulled pork for sandwiches in the slow cooker with boneless country style ribs and bbq sauce. Just let it cook a few hours then shred it with forks and put on buns. Not sure if it is called cooking but can also make a few salads like 5 cup or tuna  or egg or potato. It's not a lot of things yet and not really by myself since an adult makes sure I'm safe. But I like to cook and want to learn more.
I don't know if our school has cooking classes. My mom said they used to have some class in the 90s called home ec that had cooking in it and kitchens in the room. But I don't see it in the year books or hear about it at school so may not have it anymore.

I can cook and bake very well, It's something that my parents taught me as soon as I knew not to touch hot things, and it has proved useful as now I have the skill to hide vegetables in anything, Which is great seeing as I do most of the cooking in my house, and it is the only way that I can get my dad and grandma to eat healthy food. I'm at the point now where If there is something I want to make that I have never made before I can figure it out on my own without a recipe, however, I do tend to Look at them for inspiration sometimes. I have only twice been to a cooking class before, but they didn't really go to well, so now I just teach myself. It is something that I really have fun with, but it is also something that I would never want to do as a job.

I'm actually not sure. I'm actually taking cooking lessons at my school and we're learning how to cook basic recipes from skills we learned previously in class. However, I know how to make scrambled eggs and grilled sausages in my house without school practically assisting me. I obtained those skills by observing how my dad/mom cook things, looking up recipes, and even help out with my mom or dad with cooking things.

Yes I can cook. I did not start learning until I was around 14 years old- luckily by forcing my mother out of the kitchen that woman does not let anyone touch a pot geez lol. Well now living independently, I cook whatever I want whenever. I like to look up recipes online on Facebook and Pinterest. I have adopted an online recipe so far - for baked potatoes- omg I never think of them as a simple dish anymore- so delicious. Takes about 2 hours but so worth it. Chili powder, garlic powder, worcestershire sauce, chives make such an awesome combination- so delicious and has a nice kick to it. I added my own ingredient to the recipe - BACON!!!!- a whole bag of it cut into tiny pieces of crunchy heaven. I like cooking! I rarely use the microwave for anything I cook unless it's for re-heating purposes which I tend to use the stove most of the time.

With some help from my parents, I've recently been learning how to cook multiple simple meals that don't take long to cook. I'm confident that I know how to make sloppy joes, and as long as I don't keep forgetting the steps I also know how to cook scrambled eggs, french toast, and mashed potatoes.

Cooking is pretty fun for me but it's easy for me to become impatient while doing it. I signed up for a class in my school that requires some cooking so if the class ends up in my schedule I'll be getting even more cooking experience.

The only thing I know how to cook is Ramen Noodles. Actually, I think that's enough for me to be set for life.

In all seriousness, I don't know how to cook. I want to learn how to make things like fried rice and stuff, because I love fried rice. I would totally make it all the time when I move out if I knew how to, lol. Cooking seems fun, but I think I would be too tempted to eat the food while I'm making it to actually be successful. My mom is a great cook though, so I never had the motivation to learn because the food was already great. I need to learn from her .

I would totally make it all the time when I move out if I knew how to, lol. Cooking seems fun, but I think I would be too tempted to eat the food while I'm making it to actually be successful. My mom is a great cook though, so I never had the motivation to learn because the food was already great. I need to learn from her .

No, lmao.

I am 100% dependent on my family members for cooking, and if i for whatever reason am alone for dinner I'll just get some Doner. Pretty bad, I know.

The only thing i ever cooked was sausage, beacon or eggs, not in the microwave though. Im scared of getting burned so i dont really like cooking too much but eventually i cant rely on people to cook for me all the time, so i got to suck it up and embrace the flames and the hot cooking oil.

I can kind of cook. I never learned in school as culinary was pretty much an optional class, and I never really felt the itch to learn it. I only really started learning within the past couple of years, but that's only really because I stay home in order to take care of my grandma so I have to cook to make sure she eats. I can make a pretty decent breakfast and bake a chicken breast in the oven. Although I'd say my specialty is soups, I love eating and making soup.

Sure I obviously wouldn't call myself a master chef, but if it ever came to when I finally live on my own, or when I'm home by myself I can make myself a pretty decent meal if I really wanted too.
