BORDERLANDS

Ah, the original Borderlands, one of my favorite shooters of all time. I've owned this game for quite some time and played it a bit, but then I got Borderlands 2 and played that countless hours instead. A few months ago, the original Borderlands became free on XBOX 360 if you had Xbox Live Gold, so I decided to install it. It sucked me back in, so since then I've played it a lot. So here I am to review it!

Game Info:
The game was developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games.
The game came out on October 20, 2009 for Windows, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.
Borderlands is rated M for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language, Sexual Themes, and Use of Alcohol. However, the only concern for anyone would be the blood and gore, and even that isn't bad. Though it is a bit disturbing to burn a midget psycho to death...
There were 4 DLC campaigns released after the game.
The game is full of references and jokes and is a bit more light-hearted than many shooters.

So, onto the review.

Graphics - 8

Right when you launch the game, you may notice the graphics are shaded oddly. This is called cel-shading and is used in many other games, such as Dragon Quest VIII and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Cel-shading is basically normal shading, but with no gradients. This means that, if light is hitting something, the shading would go straight from light to dark, rather than a gradual shift with intermediate brightness. Cel-shading also typically has dark outlines.

With that being explained, you can understand that it isn't an issue with graphics, and that it's an interesting style. I believe it compliments the game very well. It may not be the most realistic, but it is pleasing to look at. I believe Gearbox did a great job in making the graphics of Borderlands, so I give it an 8.

Sound - 7

While Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel have more electronic and cool songs, the first Borderlands game focuses more on atmospheric soundtracks. When you're wandering in the wasteland, you get drums and a weird guitar. When you're in the safehouse of a known Psycho leader, you get dark, low piano notes and cymbals. I feel like the soundtrack really helps build the atmosphere of the game, but the music is quite repetitive and not catchy. The gunshot sounds are well-made too, I think, but there really are not a lot of different noises they can make. I give the sound a 7 for being good but not varying.

Gameplay/Addictiveness - 9

Borderlands is a very fast-paced, offense-oriented shooter. You won't be hiding around corners so you don't die. You'll be storming in, spraying bullets everywhere, throwing grenades, deploying turrets. The reason being is Borderlands' unique way of reviving yourself. If you die, you fall to the ground and can still shoot. If you kill any enemy while you are down, you come back to life. However, the more you die the less time you have to revive yourself. Because of the fast-paced nature, I think it's extremely fun and very addictive to play.

Borderlands is also a very loot-heavy game. There's chests everywhere and millions of guns and shields to find. The loot aspect really adds to the addictiveness. It's really satisfying to find your dream weapon in a chest. Another RPG element of the game is leveling up. When you level up, you can put perks into skills to make your character stronger. I also think that's very addictive, because I love games with progress. It can turn from "Can't stop playing now, I'm about to level up!" into "Oh, whoops I forgot, now I'm 5 levels higher!" This game is very addictive, so I give it a 9.

Story - 7

The story of this game, basically, is that you're a vault hunter searching for a legendary vault filled with all the treasures you could ever want. Money, magical powers, alien guns, women. So you're asking people for help and doing them favors by killing bandits so you can find the vault key from the help people give you. You meet Patricia Tannis, a crazy doctor who has spent many years studying the vault. She says she thinks she's found the location of the vault and its key fragments, so she helps you. Meanwhile, The Atlas Corporation wants to open the vault and use the riches and power for themselves.

The dialogue is good and the story is quite interesting, but at the end of the game it just sort of... stops. You beat the final boss, whoo, now what? What happened after? It feels unfinished, so I give the story a 7.

Depth - 8

Borderlands is a good length game, but the depth really lies in the sidequests. You could do the main quest in 5 hours, sure, but there are countless other quests to do that really add to the length of the game. Additionally, the 4 DLC's are quite lengthy and also come with extra sidequests. You have The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned where you solve a mystery, General Knoxx's Secret Armory where you fight General Knoxx's army to reach him, Moxxi's Underdome Riot which is basically an extremely long and tedious arena that no one likes, and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution where Claptrap the robot goes insane because the other robots died.

The DLCs are pretty great and I would recommend buying them if you like Borderlands. They add a nice bit of extra playtime, so I give the Depth an 8.

Difficulty - 7

This one is really hard to rate. The difficulty is very dependent on what gear you have, though they fixed that in the other Borderlands games. Though I suppose, if you do enough sidequests, you can just level up for any hard parts of the game. That's the magic of RPG's. Can't beat the enemy? Just grind your level. But really, the game isn't too difficult at all with the right weapons. Double Anarchy SMG's or Matador shotguns can really just kill anything instantly. However, some of the bosses and Crimson Lance areas are quite difficult, so I give the difficulty a 7.

Overall - 8

Overall, I give Borderlands an 8 out of 10. It's a very well made game with lots of content, an intriguing story, and very fun gameplay. My only complaint is, ironically, that I think there should be more weapon and enemy variety. Also, less driving, no one likes driving from one place to another then back!

I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of shooters of any type and/or RPG's. It goes on sale a lot on Steam and XBOX and is definitely worth the purchase. My least favorite part about the game is that there isn't more to it. It's extremely fun and addictive until you beat it. But thank goodness we have Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to make up for that!

Thanks for reading my review assuming you actually read it. Feel free to criticized any points in it, that's the only way I can improve!

It's also a part of XBOX One's backwards compatibility program. The one thing I didn't like about it is the ending credits are way too long and the same song plays about three or four times all throughout
