It's pretty simple, which quirky RPG do you prefer? Earthbound or Undertale? I realize in some respects Undertale is essentially a homage to Earthbound so a comparison might be a bit unfair especially since they were released during different times. That said, I still thought it would be interesting to make a thread on the matter to see which people prefer. Since they're still fundamentally similar and with the hype having died down a bit. So discuss which one you like and why, but do keep it civil.

Zlinqx : I personally greatly prefer Undertale. It may be a little unfair to Earthbound though, because I started the series with Mother 3, and after Mother 3, I found it impossible to go back to Earthbound. Mainly because it was a comedy, while Mother 3 was inherently a drama. I also much preferred the combat of Mother 3 as opposed to it's prequel. And overall, I think the plot of Undertale is just better than Earthbound. Undertale knows how to be funny, sad, and make you smile. I can't really say any of that happened in the brief period I played Earthbound.
 

I'll go with Undertale because of the music. I much more prefer the music for Undertale which for me gives it a huge advantage, not just for playing the game itself, but just for listening on my own free time, which is something I wouldn't do with Earthbound.

Earthbound. Although it isn't my favorite entry in the Mother series, I felt that Undertale was a tad short, even with the 3 routes you can take. Plus, they even made it possible for me to actually like some really irrelevant NPC's, which Undertale had me having trouble liking any of the main ones.

Not to mention the atmosphere of Earthbound was better, since Undertale was just 'Oh hey let's try and find a way out of this place' instead of going to new places, meeting new friends, saving people's lives and the like.

Plus, Earthbound has a weird old vibe. It doesn't seem like there's a lot of technology, the houses and cars and outfits are all stylized in a sort of retro fashion and all Undertale does is bring it up-to-date by adding cellphones, anime, lesbians, and bad puns.

That being said, Undertale has its upsides and Earthbound has its downsides but I just prefer Earthbound more.

I never finished Earthbound, so I don't think I can really say for sure. But since I could never get into Earthbound after a couple tries of playing it, while I did finish Undertale's neutral and true pacifist endings, I guess you could say that I preferred Undertale.

This is a difficult one. To me they are both great games with their own pros and cons. If I had to choose then I would choose Undertale. For a variety of reasons. First off, Undertale has the better music, one of my favorite parts of a game is its soundtrack. I'm not saying I dislike Earthbound's soundtrack however Undertale has the edge in that right.

Second off the gameplay. Undertale has a pretty unique gameplay style. You can choose to attack monsters, which then results in a typical RPG experience. Or you can choose not to attack, which involves dodging attacks while trying to spare them. It's different from most RPGs with the always having to attack and kill monsters mentality.

Lastly the story. Undertale has the more emotional story I find. I've been left in tears for every ending. I can't help but to love everything about it.
