Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones is the third and final NES game in the Double Dragon series for the NES. This game is set 1 year after the Double Dragon 2 and features a mysterious organization that isn’t revealed until later in the game. The original hero has been replaced in this game though by a guy named Bimmy and his brother Jimmy. Maybe Bimmy is a brother of Billy and Jimmy that we had not met before. Just kidding, that is obviously a translation error or typo that got missed. Still pretty funny.

Graphics 9/10 – I absolutely love the look of this game. Like the previous games the sprites are quite well done and very improved upon compared to the last 2 games. The enemies as well are more detailed and better designed and have much more variety than before. The fighting animations are also more interesting and varied. New moves in this game add a lot of visual variety to the game that was lacking before.

And like the previous games the backgrounds in this game do not disappoint. There are always things to look at in each level. Rarely is there open space that isn’t filled with something. I recall 1 later level which has blue sky as the only background but it makes sense in that case and is not just the graphics designers being lazy. Even within the levels there is a lot of detail. I particularly love the fireplace at the end of Chin’s level.

Sound 9/10 – this game again has some great sound to it just like the previous games. The main screen and intro songs are interesting. And the level songs also fit the overall feel of the game. The keep the pace up for the game but also reveal a lot of the mystery you are supposed to be feeling in the early parts of the game because it is quite unclear about what is happening. Overall the music maintains a fast pace though which suits the game and fits in with the need to find and save Marion again (yup, Marion has been kidnapped again).

I also really like the music change for each boss. It really feels like it amps up the importance of what is going on. Most games do this but I can’t ignore the fact that this game does it and does it well.

Addictiveness 9/10 – I have played this game dozens of times. I did own it as a kid so I was able to play it a lot. However, I feel like the story and gameplay lend itself to being quite an enjoyable game to play over and over again. The combat doesn’t get old because there are enough different types of things you can do with each character (and the other characters you get access to later in the game) that it stays enjoyable.

Story 8/10 – this game has a far superior story to the previous 2 games. Obviously Marion has been kidnapped again but this time you don’t know who did it. The only person who saw the kidnapping is named Brett and he is a friend. You get to him just in time to talk to him but not before he dies in his attempt to tell you who is behind the attack.

You then meet a fortune teller named Hiruko and she tells the Billy and Jimmy that Marion’s kidnappers are searching for the 3 Sacred Stones. In order to stop Marion’s kidnappers you must collect the 3 sacred stones before they do. Only once this is done is it possible to save Marion. It’s not clear why but Hiruko seems confident that this will help.

On the way to collect the stones you run into 2 characters that eventually join your team, Chin Seimei and Yagyu Ranzou. Chin is the brother of one of the guys defeated and killed during the second Double Dragon game. He is out for revenge against the Lee Brothers. Yagyu’s identity is more mysterious. After defeating each of these 2 guys you collect their stones and they join your cause.

Once both of these guys have joined your cause it is off to Italy (after being in China and Japan respectively) to find the final stone. Once the final stone is collected it is off to Egypt to save Marion and discover the secret of who kidnapped her and why. I won’t spoil the ending because that is the real twist on everything. The twist at the end is another reason why this game is so much better than the previous ones. It’s not just a straight beat em up challenge to save the girl.

Depth 4/10 – there isn’t that much depth to the game really. 5 levels that aren’t too long or complicated to complete and a boss fight at the end of each one. The story doesn’t really have room for more levels but it feels like the game could use it. It’s just a bit short for my taste.

Difficulty 7/10 – this game, like its previous incarnations, is not an overly hard game to play. The gameplay overall is straightforward. You need to beat up all the bad guys. Like the earlier games there are almost always 2 or 3 enemies (depending on 1 or 2 player mode) on the screen almost all the time leaving you outnumbered. This isn’t as bad as it was previously because there are more moves to use this game. The Lee brothers have the spinning kick move from Double Dragon 2 that hits enemies on either side of them and propels them back pretty far. This is by far the most useful, but sometimes difficult, move to use. There is also a running flip toss sort of move which is fun to use but doesn’t work all that often. The 2 playable characters also have their own move set which keeps the variety of the gameplay good.

There aren’t many instant death spots in the game which also reduces the difficulty. There is 1 spot at the top of the elevator in the first level which has a ledge to the left that if you fall off you die instantly. That makes sense and is also useful to you if you can knock enemies of the ledge. The other spot I remember is on the Egypt level. You start out the level on top of large pillar blocks that have large spaces separating them from each other. The jump is possible with all the characters but must be made nearly perfectly in order to not die. I believe there are a few more jumps like this later in the Egypt level once you are inside the pyramid. They aren’t overly difficult but you can also be knocked off the place you are standing into the open spaces and die really quickly. Can be pretty frustrating when that happens.

Something else that helps the difficulty not be as bad as other games are the extra weapons that each character has. The Lee brothers have nunchakus which beat the first boss on their own. Chin has this claw thing for his hand that increases the damage he deals while using it and Yagyu has shuriken that he can throw. Each of these items is limited in use so is best saved for the boss of each level but they are very helpful. Most bosses would be difficult to defeat without the weapons.

Overall 7.6/10 – it is not often that I find a sequel to a game, on the same console, which I think is better than the original. This game however does that for me. The game looks and sounds better. The gameplay is WAY more interesting. The story is far superior and there are more playable characters this time around which makes the game way more fun. The difficulty is still manageable. Certain parts are clearly very difficult but most of the game is playable by someone and beatable within a few tries of the game. The only real disappointing part is how short the game is. If it were a bit longer this game would be an 8+ for sure. Still, highly recommend this game. Super fun to play!
