The Big Reveal

Sony has officially announced that PSVR will be available this October, and the price will indeed be what we expected: $400. Now this may sound steep, but if you've been keeping up with the VR scene then you're probably aware that the Oculus Rift runs for $599 and the HTC Vive fetches a pretty penny with an asking price of $799 so in light of this and the fact that the Rift and Vive will require all but the most devoted PC gamers who have forked out the cash for a high end rig - so the vast majority of us - to buy a new PC that can run them, the PSVR costing $400 is actually quite a bargain as VR goes.

An added bonus is that both the Rift and PSVR were speculated as costing roughly $400 by their developers while they were being made, but the Rift was unable to hold that price level upon release. The PSVR price is no surprise however, as we were told it would cost the same as a new console long ago.

On One Condition...

That's right, there is a small hitch: the camera. Again, if you've been following VR news then you already know this as Sony has said the PSVR would use the camera from it's announcement two years ago, but for the rest of you, PSVR will require a PlayStation camera (for head movement tracking, I believe), and most PS4 owners don't have one, so be prepared to pay out an additional $50.

So in the long run, PSVR will cost most of us $450, but if you plan to get into VR, then this is easily the cheapest route for you. In fact, even if you don't have a PS4 and you have to buy one, this is almost certainly your cheapest route unless you have a beast of a PC already.

Which Is Right For You?

As for the experience, PlayStation has plainly said that the Rift will offer higher end graphics, but that PSVR is aimed at mass market appeal. In short their comment on it was that the PSVR is trying to be the best it can be while staying within the average gamer's budget. And indeed, the system will run roughly $200-$1200 cheaper than any other VR set out there will, assuming you have a PS4 already.

So is PSVR the right choice for everyone? No. No, those who have no PS4 but do have a very high end PC have access to a higher quality of visuals (assuming the developers push for that higher quality instead of just porting directly between Rift and PSVR, and they likely won't on multiplats). But for the rest of us - including those who do not have a top of the line PC or a PS4, PSVR is definitely the most practical choice.

Finally the PSVR currently has a confirmed release lineup of fifty games, with Tekken 7 probably being the most notable. Nothing super exciting for most of us (barring Tekken 7), but that's to be expected at a system's launch.

So what do you think? Is the PSVR a worthy contender in VR? Will you be picking one up?

Considering just how costly it is even if it a cheaper alternative I probably won't ever try getting it. I'm stripped for cash just trying to get new games for my PS4 already, in fact part of the reason I got one in the first place is because I couldn't afford a good gaming PC I just don't see any kind of experience I have being worth that price.

If I were to get into it I'd probably get the Oculus or Vive in stead simply because there would likely be more options on PC like having more games and better graphic options and if I could afford getting it in the first place I probably could afford a good PC as well.

I wasn't highly interested in this until I saw Tekken 7... Damn, they know my weak spot!

I don't think I will be getting it, though. I admit I don't have a great lineup of games to acquire for PS4 as it is and probably PSVR could change that, but I don't see myself getting that, the camera and play it on my room, even less moving everything around when my parents aren't home so I can play in the big TV.

Are PSVR titles exclusive or can they be played in PS4 the traditional way? This question is key to my interests, I could add something to my Christmas presents list in mid March

EX Palen : I can't find anything saying that the VR games can be played that way, however it is capable of displaying the game in the headset as well as on the screen, so in theory you could just leave the headset off and play it on the screen, yes.
Additionally, all PS4 games can be played with PSVR, though I'm not clear on how they're affected by it. And there are reportedly 260 developers on board PSVR game development and 130 games currently in development.

I'm still not sold, but it looks slightly better than it did to begin with. Still, I don't think VR will catch on. I expect the Rift, Vice, PSVR, and everything else to be a fad like the Wii was. I think it'll boom for a year or two and fade away. But the PSVR does have a few interesting titles, so who knows?

Zlinqx : What?? I thought better of you, Zlinqy! I'm taking away your gg Cage badge. D:
Seriously though, I don't think VR is a good idea. Everyone is getting hyped, but I just don't see it overcoming or even running alongside traditional gaming. That's just me though. Still, the PSVR will honestly have the most compatible games, but not the fidelity that others will have.

Eirinn : D: NOT MY GG CAGE BADGE I CAN CHANGE PLEASE (what does this badge represents again :v)

I think unless it is made a lot more affordable and technology progresses more it's not really going to become more than a cool novelty like it is now. I still think an Oculus or Vive will be the better option because PC allows for more modding opportunity (which is where it gets interesting) and they don't run the risk of becoming obsolete if new consoles stop being developed. Assuming this doesn't become a passing fad, I do think it has potential to where there will at least always be some kind of audience for it. Of course you see people getting hyped but I'm wondering just how many of these people will actually be getting any of these.

More than anything, I'm excited for things to come. VR is really just now getting off the ground. In another 20 - 30 years is what I'm hyped for, maybe even a little sooner. I couldn't afford the current VR systems if I wanted to, but I would definitely get them if I had the money to burn. I realize technology that directly links to your brain is probably extremely far off, but seeing things like Sword Art Online make me want to experience something similar more than I can stand it lol. I'm sure I'm not alone here, so it's only a matter of time. I just hope I can enjoy such things before my lifetime ends

Mynamescox44 : Your post reminds me of a Gameranx video. He discussed the possibility of game hardware that enables us to feel what happens in the game. Actually said tech exists in a sense, in that they have already made a way for amputees to feel when they touch something with their prosthetics. However that would be a long way into the future, not to mention the fact that it currently requires actually having them wire it into your brain which is more than a little off putting... Lol

Still if they could safely make a game that could do what you mentioned, I think most of us (even non-gamers) would love to try it. Couldn't get any more realistic than that, man.
