Want something to read? Well, this is the thread for you! List a book, series, or author you enjoy; and think others would enjoy too! Feel free to engage in a conversation over these books too.

A series I would definitely recommend is The Chronicles of Narnia. As for individual books, I would recommend The Hobbit, Tom Sawyer, and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

What are yours?

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

I recommend "Nothing but the Truth" by Avi (as well as all of his other books!) and "The Lost Years of Merlin" series.  It's been a while since I've read either, but if you want to engage in discussion about these books (or even read them along with me!), I'd be glad to oblige.  I'd love to re-read these books.

I think there are many amazing books for everyone to read but it is mostly based of my opinion. I will go with some of the classics, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as it actually really is a moving and emotional book that really makes you think about life and survival of the fittest. The Scarecrow and his Servant if you want a humourous and strange adventure about a scarecrow who comes to life and tries to reclaim his property.  Finally, since I don't want to talk about too many books, I'd say To kill a mocking bird because it's a strong and fun read about the childhood about two siblings and how they learn about the troubles about their home and get involved with lots of issues. Hopefully you guys find some of these to be interesting and if you want any more I got loads of books.

Two notable examples I can think of are:

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy the whole series it's so famous for a reason, a very funny and unique book series to read, lots of clever humor and while good just from face value there's also lot of social commentary that still holds up today.

I would also recommend Animal Farm due to how it's essentially political satire, and how the masses of people can be more or less brainwashed to think a certain way like we've seen throughout history in various countries which if you're interested in that kind of stuff you'll enjoy.

Really during the summer I'm going to try and do a lot of reading, there are a lot of famous books I've yet to read and want to catch up on.

If you're looking for fun and adventure, I would recommend both the 39 clues as well as the hardy boys.

As for individual books i recommend The Robot, Spray, and definitely Jennifer Government.

I would recommend anything from Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.  The Heroes of the Lance trilogy was excellent as was The Legend of Huma.  I have not yet read a Dragon Lance book that I did not like.  They are fantasy based with knights and dragons, goblins, ogres, minotaur, and just about every thing you can think of.  Great reads, all of them

I have 2 series to recommend if you are a fan of medieval fantasy (like Lord of the Rings type stuff).

First is Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (and later finished by Brandon Sanderson). This series has 15 books total in it and I thought was pretty good. There are a few books that feel drawn out a bit too much later on but I enjoyed the story and the characters.

Second is The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. This series is similar in style and feel to Wheel of Time. I've only gotten through 6 books so far of the series and there are 17 books in total. I'm really enjoying the series. I feel like no matter how much stuff is resolved as I get through each consecutive book that things never really feel like they total have resolved. Even once one threat is gone the characters and situations don't feel fully complete or resolved. I really like that. It keeps me wanting to read more and more of the books.

I recommend Night In The Lonesome October by Richard Laymon, perfect month to read it but only a few days left,it is a dark and twisted horror thriller and not aimed at kids or teenagers even, more of an adult read,it is about a heartbroken college student named Ed who goes on late night walks around his neighborhood and he meets lot of weirdos and scary people and soon his life and his friends' lives are in serious danger,it is quite a read, would make a good movie

Oh gosh this book recommendation thread is too small... must... make... bigger.
Anyways, I need books to read so hopefully posting here will encourage others to post here so I won't end up in a book deprived pit of sorrow somewhere.

Fun light read: Lockwood & Co. , a series by Jonathan Stroud
Exciting, humorous, and has a touch of adventure; and is easy to read :|

The Young Elites + Rose Society

This series is interesting. I recommend reading the first book. As for the second book, read it if you don't mind cliches and enjoy a VERY typical modern day romance/drama/action novel... Otherwise, don't.

If you all haven't read these yet, these are some really good books that I recommend you all read. Most of these stories are some I read in school and really enjoyed.

To Kill A Mockingbird - Arguably one of the most well known novels of all time, with many, many schools across the nation reading it, and it's actually become one of my favorite books to read, and we're not even at the very end of it yet.

Lord of the Flies - This is the last book we read, and it was pretty good for the most part. The ending is bogus and bland, though. I mean the very end.

Alex Rider series - This book series is arguably my favorite book series of all-time. I started reading it in 4th grade and have read the first 7 books so far. I don't know if there's more or not since I've become out of touch when it comes to reading recently, but if there is I'm sure they are good reads as well.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series - For those who just want to read something silly and fun. This book series has always been favorites of elementary schoolers, including myself. I owned all of the books up until around 6th Grade when I gave them to my brother. I think they're still making new ones, and you can most easily find them at Target, in my opinion.

These are the only ones I can think of at the moment, but I'll post again once I think of more to add to the list.

A long time ago, I read a series called Magician Master. One of my teachers recommended it to me in middle school, and I enjoyed it, so even young adults can read it, I think.

Lexatom : Did the class get into a discussion about why the ending of the Lord of the Flies is as it is?

It's an important idea on the whole concept the book is bringing to the table. Of course the ending is as it is. That's what happens when the whole thing comes crashing down.

Ghostbear1111 :

No, we never discussed that. I just thought it was a dumb ending, ha. Glad to know it actually had something to do with the concept.

Lexatom : the whole point is the casual relationship between the 'civilized' military officer, the naval officer who shows up and just ends everything, and how savage the boys have become. Ralph goes from trying to increase their chances of survival to running for his own life, trying to just live another few moments at a time. The pursuit is one of savage violence, of an uncivilized wild group just killing for the sport of it, and suddenly, an adult shows up and everything simply ends.

It goes back to the boys being boys and an adult asserting control. The officer is even embarrassed at the boys for how they look and what they're doing because they're so uncivilized.

I would argue the very last scene is the second most important scene in the book, with Ralph and the pig's head the first. It's terrible your teacher passed up that moment that is so critical to the whole point of the story.

It's an ongoing series but I have found is Adventurers Wanted by M. L. Forman. Its a very good adventure/fantasy series.

One of my very favorite series is the Deltora Collection by Emily Rodda. It's a fantasy children's book but adults can enjoy it too. The First Part series was even adapted to a manga, game, and Anime.

Recently I have been reading Historical fiction. I would recommend the Shogun series, it provides an interesting narrative and an insight into the history of East Asia, particularly Japan in a really interesting way and sort of displays the cultural clash that has been so prevalent, as the protagonist is among the first westerns to set foot in the country. It might just be since I enjoy reading about history but I find historical fiction more compelling than pure fiction. For those who like educational books I would recommend Madness in Civilization, which is a history of mental illness throughout the ages, I find it is a really relevant subject because it is something that we have all either encountered or likely will encounter at some point in the future. It really showcases how little we still know on the field and provides a really good insight into the subject, I am still only at the beginning but I am finding it really interesting so far.

I would seriously recommend checking out A Study in Scarlet -- at least the first part. The first part is a Sherlock story, and actually the first one. It's really interesting to look into a personality such as him. I'd also recommend you look into the second Sherlock story, The Sign of Four. You can probably find them all on Literature.org.

I'd definitely recommend a book I read a while back called I Funny by James Patterson. It's very fitting for its title and it's an interesting fiction story about a guy in a wheelchair who likes "stand-up" comedy.

If you're a weeb, this recommendation is for you.
1) Haruhi Suzumiya - This series is really good for those trying to get into novel-style japanese media, as manga is more about the images along with the story, this series has few images, but the story is really good, even though it's just another high school story.

2) Sword Art Online - This series is good for a laugh, as the anime is usually knocked for being really bad, but the light novels are alright, as they have extra details not included in the show.

As this isn't locked, I'd like to recommend Flowers for Algernon. It's a book about a guy who was considered to be stupid, being used in an experiment to test the effects of an intelligence enhancing drug. However, by undergoing such a treatment, he comes to discover that maybe being intelligent isn't what he really wanted.
