I just got a Lenovo A62 type 9935 motherboard and I'm planning on upgrading from Athlon 64 X2 500B to a quad-core  to Phenom ii or Athlon II.
I checked the chipset and it supports both of them. If the chipset supports them and they fit in the CPU socket, will it work on my mobo? For the record, I already updated my bios to the latest one.

Knowing the make and model of the motherboard would help...
With the info you gave, I can only find generic information you would find on the side of the box.

It should be printed somewhere on the board itself...

I can't seem to find the manual anywhere for that board.

I want to say the Althon X2 is a Socket AM2. If that's the case, you should be able to get up to a Phenom x4.
I don't think the Phenom II is compatible with that socket. IIRC, Phenom II is AM3

CPU will only fit in mother boards with the same chip set every chip set has different pins. I have build many computers over the years and there is never 100% will work even with components direct from the manufacturer. As long as you take the necessary action to fit the component correctly and with the right tools then you've done every thing you can. In my opinion the first time you boot up after the install you should only use 1 memory stick in slot 1 and the HDD with your operating system on and pre download all your drivers for all components before the swap over and store them on a pen drive. So if it doesn't boot up then you know the problem is only with what is plugged into the mobo. Just remember computer can be so fickle I've been doing a repair and everything iv'e tried to do to fix the system will just not work. So I shut everything down and pull out the power cable and went out for the night. The following day I powered the computer up and I booted straight away.
Just one more thing have you checked the compatibility with you memory and graphics card as well, its always worth checking just make sure you know every will work together. If you do have any problems feel free to drop me a private message and I will help out anyway I can

Good luck

Vanelan : I looked around and there are phenom ii for socket AM2+, or at least on Amazon.  I checked on the Lenovo website and it says that my system supports AM2+ CPUs. I also checked the change log for the bios updates and there's one that adds support for AM3 CPUs in a previous version, and I have the latest.

hoguan : Maybe for that bios chip set.
The pins are different between AM2 and AM3 boards though.
AM2 is 940 pins while AM3 is 941.
I am pretty sure the keys are in different spots on each type.

Vanelan : What about 938 pin Phenom ii's? Also should I worry about the wattage?

Does that board support AM2+?
I am almost sure that the keys are the same on the AM2 and AM2+ and the wattage shouldn't be an issue. (Its been a really long time since I had an AM2 ^^; )
