Hello everyone, Laian here with the monthly walkthrough. Boy, I really dug deep down in the depths of the Retro Game Room to find the game of this month. It's crazy what you can find when you spend some time looking for a game to play. Question: do you know about the game called "Rolan's curse"? Yes? No? Possibly? Well, this is what I found and I'm going to share this with you. Welcome to the walkthrough of "Rolan's curse", made by your host Laian. I hope you will enjoy this adventure. Let's just jump into it without wasting any more time, shall we?

CHAPTER 1

You start in a town with only three houses you can't go in and some NPCs. You can talk to them but they won't give you any useful information, just the typical plot stuff. Before leaving the town, you might want to grab the potion of life inside the lonely chest to the left of the only gate of the town. That could be useful if you're reckless like me. Now, let's go on the great adventure, shall we?

Leave the town and take one of the paths to the lake. On your way to the lake, kill some enemies to eventually get a minor potion of life. As opposed to the big one, you don't keep it in your inventory bar. You instantly drink it when taken. Once there, go left to find a magic axe (yep, that looks like a pickaxe for some reason) and a life max up. The magic axe will replace the potion of life if you haven't used it yet. Also, don't even bother to go back to the village and pick the potion up in the future: it's gone forever. Great, isn't it? You have to pay attention to what you want to take otherwise you might be stuck. Go back to the lake, then go north and get rid of the bush with the magic axe. Careful here, the wolf that appears here usually drops a potion of life when he dies. Do I have to tell you that, if you accidentally take it, you lose the magic axe forever? You should give up the potion and keep the magic axe if that happens, even if you desperately need to recover some health. The chest contains an armor though, which increases your life by 1. Now go through the gate to enter a cave.

Go all the way north, grab the fire wand inside the chest and go west. The fire wand slightly increases your attack power by 1 and has a better range. Also, you probably saw a chest kept by a zombie. Do not worry, you will get it in a few minutes. Go left, ignore the gate and the chest for now and go south. Get the glove in the chest kept by the bat at the end of the line (this will increase your attack power by 1), go back to the previous room, go east, kill the zombie and grab a new life max up. Now, get the sword in the chest nearby the gate (it will grant you a +1 bonus to your attack power) and leave the cave.

Go north, cut the bush with the magic axe to get the glove lying on the island and go east. Go down to find a fire wand and then west to grab a life max up. Head to the north now, pick the sword up in the chest and move on to the west. Go through the gate to come to a new town. There's a chest right before you containing a potion of life (1). It's been a while since we last saw that item right? As always, the NPCs will give you informations if you talk to them. You can see two gates to the north. The one to the left leads to the cave where the creature you must kill dwells. The other gate leads to an old castle taken by the goblins. The old castle is a small area of four rooms where you can find two goodies in both of the northern rooms: a glove and a life max up. Other than that, the skulls drop a minor potion of life to refill your health bar slowly. And, if you're lucky enough, the mage keeping the chest with the glove might drop his fire wand. Last thing about this old castle, the grim reaper creatures sometimes drop a ring. It will permanently replace the item assigned to the A button and will turn you into something to trick your opponents everytime you use it. To be honest, I don't know if it has a purpose in-game or if it's something like the big potion of life, just here to piss you off. It wouldn't be surprising. Anyway, leave the old castle and enter the cave.

The cave is pretty much linear. On your way to the boss, you'll be able to find a life max up and a glove. If you don't have the magic axe, the glove is unreachable. Also, the enemies in the room before the gate usually drop a small vial to recover some health. Farm some before going through the gate. There's no turning back considering it's where the boss is. If you decided to full heal yourself and if you kept the fire wand, this boss is a piece of cake. Just stand right before him and shoot some fireballs at him. You will take some damage but you can easily "tank" this boss with full health. Otherwise, you can dodge the projectiles and shoot the boss. It's up to you. After a few hits, the boss will be defeated and peace will be restored in Rolan.

CHAPTER 2

Oh oh, wait a second! You think it's over? There's a whole new world to explore! And you lose all the equipment parts you collected so far but, thankfully, you keep the health max up thingies and the items you currently have in your inventory. The first town has a potion of life, as always (2). Go through the gate to leave the town.

Go north to see a chest with a magic ring. That ring is the same as the one that the grim reaper creatures in the old castle drop. It's the chameleon's ring. Again, I don't see the point of picking this up besides giving up the item assigned to the A button. Go north once more, get rid of the bush if you have the magic axe and grab the glove. Now, go east, then all the way south to find a magic axe in the chest on the island if you need one. Go all the way east now to find a life max up, go back to the previous room and go north. Before going through the gate, you can take the sword in the chest behind the bush.

New area, new enemies. You can see a chest on an isle after the first crab to kill. It contains an armor. Carry on, get rid of the rock with the magic axe to find a power crystal. That will replace the item assigned to the A button. That power crystal allows you to shoot a projectile after holding the A button for a few seconds. Honestly, I suggest you to keep the magic axe but it's up to you. Carry on, blast the rock with the magic axe if you still have it and collect the armor. Now, go north and enter the new town. The chest contains a potion of life. There are two gates in this town. One leads to the castle with horrible creatures and goodies, the other one leads to the next area. Inside the castle, you can find an armor, a fire wand, a life max up and a glove. It would be nice to visit the castle just for all these treasures, right? Once you cleared the castle, go to the other gate to leave the town and proceed to the next area.

Go north, then west to find a fire wand, collectable if you have the magic axe. Most of the items in this area requires the magic axe to get them. Go back, go north and carry on in order to find an armor and a glove. Go east now, grab the sword kept by the creature and go north to find another armor and the gate to the next zone. Go north, then west and south to find the shield of valor behind a bush. This item is like Link's shield, it will parry the shots thrown at you only. Although, it replaces the item assigned to the A button. Also, you can turnaround while holding the shield right in front of you. Go west to pick up a life max up. Now, go back, go north, then west to find a glove. Go all the way east, then north to grab a fire wand. Go west and enter the new town. The chest... well it contains the same item as the previous towns. Although, people are talking about items you've already seen. The power crystal, the chameleon's ring... Speaking of the chameleon's ring, a NPC says "Have you seen my chameleon ring?"... I was slightly confused in a way. Does it mean he wants the chameleon ring we saw at the beginning of this world 2 or is he showing you a chameleon ring? That's a good question. Anyway, enter the cave to the north.

Go right, blast the rocks with the magic axe and carry on to get at the end of the line a potion of life. Go back to the branching path, go west, then take the upper path to find a fire wand, go back and take the middle path. In the next room, you'll find a life max up. Go back to the branching path, go north, pick up the sword if you want to (I highly recommend you to keep the fire wand though for the upcoming boss fight) and carry on. Finally, blast the rocks, kill the wizard and grab the glove in the chest before going through the gate. That boss has two attacks. He starts with a zigzag attack then he bumps around the room. Avoid the zigzag attack by going to the top left hand corner of the room and wait until he bounces. Then shoot some projectiles with the fire wand and go back to your safe spot. He will come back to the top of the room and start his zigzag attack. You shouldn't be hit by that since he goes to the right. Plus, you can shoot some projectiles if you're at the same level as your opponent. After a few shots, you'll be victorious. And guess what? There's another area to explore!

CHAPTER 3

You start in a town, as always. And you can find a potion of life in the only chest of this area. Also, you lose all the stuff you collected except for the life max up bonuses. Go through the gate to enter a cave. Go all the way north, then west and finally north to find a fire wand in the chest. Go south twice then east, blast the rocks to reach the chest containing a glove. Now, go all the way west, then south to grab a life max up in the chest and a power crystal if you want to in the room to the right. Go back to the room in which you collected the life max up bonus, go all the way north, take the armor in the chest and leave the cave.

You come to a new town with NPCs and a potion of life in the chest. And two gates. One leads to a castle but you have a bit of a hike to get there and the other one leads you to the rest of that world 3. Choose the eastern gate to go to the castle or the western gate to carry on your quest.

This part is about the castle. There's a cave to explore before the castle though. It's a small cave with only two directions to go right at the beginning. Go east first to get a life max up at the end of the line then go west to find a shield of valor in the chest (3) and the gate to the castle. Inside the castle, the first item you can get is the chameleon's ring. When you come to the branching path, go east to find in the next rooms a fire wand, a potion of life and a glove. Go back to the branching path and go north to find the last goodies in the last rooms of the castle: an armor and a life max up bonus. Go back to the town now and go through the other gate to continue your quest.

Go all the way up to find a glove in the chest, then go back to the branching path and go east to find a magic axe in the chest. Go north to find the gate to the next area, kept by three crabs. Go north twice then west to find a power crystal in the chest. Head back to the branching path, go west to face another branching, then south to pick up a chameleon's ring and go west to find a glove. Now, head back to the last branching path, go west and collect the shield of valor if you want to before entering the new town. Yep, there's a potion of life in the chest. Nothing else interesting here so carry on. Go north to find a glove inside a chest then go east, then south. Go east and carry on until you reach the other gate. On your way to the next gate, you can grab a potion of life, a magic axe and a fire wand. Go through the gate now to enter the other castle of world 3. Take the sword in the chest if you want to and move on to the next room. Go east then north to find a life max up bonus. Now, head back to the branching path and go north. Go through the gate to face the boss. This boss... this boss is a joke. The easiest boss in this game, by far. He starts to your left, moves forward then goes back to his original position before turning into a giant boulder in order to crush you on his way to the other side. If you have the fire wand, this enemy doesn't stand a chance since you can shoot through the walls easily. And even with the sword, this boss is just a piece of cake. Just go under him when he does his crusher part and hit him with your best shot. Time for the last and small part of this game.

CHAPTER 4

Like I said, it's the last part and it's pretty much linear and small. There's just an old man and two goodies in this town. Yep, two goodies: a potion of life and a life max up bonus. Go through the gate to enter the cave. It's a small cave, just two rooms to explore. The last one has a sword and a fire wand to grab. It let you the choice of the weapon you want to kill Barius and his last minions, that's nice. Go through the gate, find the glove in the chest and carry on. Finally, you're facing the final boss of this game: Barius. He only has one attack. He turns into three black balls which move to another corner of the room then he turns back into his original form. Avoid the balls and attack him when he's back to his true form. Also, you cannot hit him when he's flashing. That means he's going to turn into black balls and you better be prepared for that. After a few hits, he will be defeated. Watch the final cutscene. Congratulations, you completed "Rolan's curse".

Well, that was "Rolan's curse" for you, folks. Quite short but that was fun. Anyway, I see you in the next walkthrough. Until next time, take care.

I love the presentation of this. It's true that you can find some awesome hidden gems just by spending a little time searching around the Retro Game Room which I wish more users would do.

Did you make those maps?

Davideo7 :
That is why I like to play games that people might not know about. Rolan's curse is a "ok" game. I mean, I had fun playing it but the only complaint I have about the game is that you don't have an inventory like The Legend of Zelda. You can only equip one weapon at the time and same thing to the sub-item. You'll mostly use the magic axe if you go for full exploration, considering most of the items can be picked up if you have the magic axe. Plus, blasting some weak obstacles with it might result to the opening of shortcuts, which might come in handy. During the entire adventure, I went with fire wand and magic axe since it's in my opinion the most useful items in the game. But, what I really mean by the inventory issue is, like I said in this walkthrough, if you grab another item, it will replace the one you currently have and the previous item will be gone forever. You cannot switch to other items in this game as far as I know. Weapons can be easily found and enemies sometimes drop them if you're lucky. The sub-items on another hand... it's a bit of a pickle, especially if you get rid of the magic axe or any useful item. I haven't played the sequel but I hope they fixed that problem.

As for the maps... well I had to find the picture of a parchment, made the maps with Paint (yeah, my old buddy ), then add a bit of transparency to the map, copy paste the map to the parchment sample, resize it and finally add a bit of transparency to the whole map. In summary, yeah I made the maps. Though, the quality is not what I really expected to look like

And yeah, completely forgot the key for the map. Was it on purpose? Maybe I want people to figure out the maps, like a game or a riddle

Although the maps were a little blurry, nice guide! It's highly detailed and I could get a hold of everything I need to get by reading your guide. However (from the guides I published), I believe it would be better to put the screenshots next to the text they are related to; the third reference is way down.

Laian : Creating the maps was definitely a nice touch. I always love guides with maps.

Wow...
I'm amazed that you took the time to make those maps. Like David said, they definitely add to the guide.

I kinda wish I didn't read the whole guide now though, cuz the game seems interesting and I want to check it out in the future.
Hopefully I will forget most of it by the time I get around to playing this game. ^^;

Still, great guide. :3

I might do this in the future. It's true that the screenshots are quite misplaced. I'm gonna keep that in mind for the next walkthrough and see how it goes.

Davideo7 :
There's another feature I'd like to add to the guide for the future RPGs I'll play: the bestiary. Speaking of this, here's a fun fact: I originally started and WAS supposed to add a bestiary in the walkthrough of Crystalis for NES but, since your stats couldn't go beyond a specific maximum, I couldn't carry on that idea. Hopefully one day, I'll be able to do this.

Vanelan :
Go for it, man. But keep in mind what I already said in my last post. There's more about this game but it's better if I let you see this by yourself
