EDIT: Big mistake, I just noticed I made a post like this 2 years ago, only with a wall of text and some bias. It also has a little more personal experience and background info than this does. Plus it's closed for some reason... maybe it wasn't a good post? I'd better talk about stuff other than my major pet peeves.

Hi all,
I know this isn't a popular subject being debated right now, but I just want to see what people think. Does anyone think that performance exhaust systems (ex: MagnaFlow and Cherry Bomb Muffler) should be regulated? I may not put a lot of detail into my post, but performance exhausts are basically loud mufflers that people use in place of their factory muffler to increase the volume of their engine sound.

It's really annoying, and I'm not saying it because I searched it up on the web. I've been having to live with the kind of people who would mess up their muscle cars and pickup trucks just for their enjoyment. Saying this, vehicles with performance exhausts can disturb neighborhoods, schools, parks, and any other place you can think of. Not only that, loud vehicles can cause lots of stress, which isn't healthy for your mind and body.

People think that soundproofing buildings and homes would solve this problem, but some don't have the money to do this, or they feel it's a waste to invest into soundproofing technologies. Another solution would be moving to remote, less populated places, yet this would not be a decision for most urban/suburban families.

Other than that, what's your honest opinion about performance exhaust systems, and do you think they should be regulated?

Well I know that a lot of municipalities have banned certain REALLY loud exhaust systems and it's illegal to not have a muffler at all. For example, I know some states have banned Glasspack mufflers.

I kinda wish that people would stop putting certain bad sounding exhausts on their Honda Civics but we can thank Gran Turismo and Fast and the Furious for that sort of stuff lol. Not a lot you can do about that.

Most people believe that this modification somehow increases their performance somehow.
Its much more involved than people think to get more HP out of a car than just changing out the exhaust system.

Anyway, many cities do regulate it and issue citations for loud mufflers.

I personally hate those with a passion. However I am always reluctant when it comes to government regulations, which usually cause more bad than good.

IF they are to be regulated, let it be to avoid overnight noise as to avoid waking up everyone. Otherwise, people having these mufflers pay higher gas prices for running their engines so loudly.
