The Mega Man X series started with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The first three games were huge hits. In fact X1, X2 and X3 were ranked pretty high among gaming experts top 100 SNES games. X3 was a huge hit for the SNES as newer systems such as the Playstation and N64 were being made. The original X3 came out in America in 1996. The game as I stated was such a huge hit that it has been remade several times. The game was remade in 1998 for the Play Station (which is this version), and again for the Mega Man X anniversary collection for Play Station II. I will be reviewing the Play Station version, which was only released in Europe, and comparing it to the SNES version, which is the original version.

Warning this review may contain Tornado Rants

Story: 10

Mega Man X3 kept the same story as the SNES version, which was nice, because a lot of times when games are remade sometimes the plot changes. After X and Zero defeated Sigma for the second time his attempts to wipe out the world has faded. A Scientist by the name of Dr. Doppler has supposedly invented a vaccine that prevents reploids and robots from going maverick. Peace has returned so the humans, and reploids build up a city named after Doppler called Doppler Town. It seems like all is going smoothly. Until mavericks start turning up left and right. It becomes clear that the vaccine is a placebo. The Maverick  Hunters see reploids turn maverick and they suspect Doppler has gone insane. X and Zero rush out to stop the madness. Is Doppler really behind this or is someone pulling his strings? Is the rumor of a Maverick Virus true?

Okay I really like how they did not change a thing. X3 had an amazing plot so kudos to Capcom for not changing the plot in this remake. I thought the plot showed creativity. Because its not given right off the bat who the real bad guy is. Though that is revealed soon after defeating a few bosses. But it gives you a mystery and suspense. The previous two X games you knew that Sigma was the bad guy right off the bat. For X3 its like Capcom was trying to hide that early in the game. It brought something knew for the serious. I like plots that show creativity and you can tell the game makers put effort into this. Thus, I give the plot a perfect 10 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls 7

Remember how I said there would be tornado rants ? Well here we go. Before I get into the positives I'm going to start off with the negatives. Capcom What were you thinking by changing the intro graphics? The original X3 had amazing graphics in the intro. You had the city's skyline with different colors and you had the rotating spot light. The background had clouds to let the players know it was night outside. Did the Play Station Remake have that nope. This version's of X3 intro is a bunch of cut scenes of X1 and X2 put together. There is no explanation of who Dr. Doppler is like there was in X3 intro. No pictures of the city no nothing just cut cut scenes.

As for the controls they were pretty much decent but not as smooth as the original version. X3 had some of the best and smoothest controls for an SNES game. That is what made the original version so special. So you would think this being a Play Station game that it would be amazing right? Well the answer is wrong. I was shocked on how sluggish and stiff the controls felt. It just seemed like at times in the game there was lagging.  I do not know why that is. I think this game was rushed (more on that later).

Now for the positives. Even though I was upset they changed the intro. The cut scenes are nice and colorful. The characters in the cut scenes match their SNES color so that was good.  Also the stages have kept their color which in the original game was amazing. The winter stage, the jungle stage, airport stage, and power plant stage were amazing in the original game. So it was nice to see those were not changed.

Still the graphics and controls were not as sharp as I expected them to be. I really think Capcom rushed this remake and it really shows here. I do not know why they would butcher up the intro graphics and intro theme here. The controls not being as sharp hurts the rating too. I give the graphics a 6 out of 10.

Sound: 7

If you played the SNES version of X3 you probably remember the amazing sound track and sounds of that game. X3 had one of the best soundtracks in all of the X series. Only X2 and X6 are on par with it. The intro stage, the stage themes, and the sounds of the game were amazing. So you would think Capcom would keep that since X3 was praised by gaming experts for its sound? Well not really. The intro of the game with the city in the background and music was done away with for the introduction of this game. Also if anybody has played the original version you probably remember how good the intro stage music was. This version has a totally different intro stage. It does not even resemble the original's version. Also the bosses pretty much have their stages but they are remixed. In some stages it sounds off key from the original version.

The sounds the mavericks make and X & Zero make are still very good. Buster shots still sound powerful, The Z saber still has its powerful sound. Also mavericks when they shoot or attack you have their sound. The new intro music is not bad but its nothing like the original version. Also as I alluded too the mavericks still have their sounds but they were remixed. The Jungle and Winter Stage remix sound very good and are not off key. But the other stages it feels like their remixes are off key and lagging. So that hurts the sound rating I give it a 7 out of 10. Wish they would have kept the original sound as the old saying goes if it is not broke do not fix it.

Replay Value: 6

After my SNES came old and started to not work as good as it had all I had to play was this version. I was not on Vizzed yet or knew Vizzed existed. So I had to play this version often if I wanted to enjoy X3. Even though this version had its negatives it was better than not having X3 at all. So I played it and the game was fun do not get me wrong. But it was not as good as the original X3. It just seemed like it did not have the charm that the original version had. But when I discovered Vizzed and found out they had the SNES version. I went back to playing the original version. I have not really played this version that much since then. The reason being I got to play the original again when I joined Vizzed. I give the replay value a 6 out of 10. Its not horrible despite the negatives but not quite as good as the original. Like I said before I found Vizzed this was all I had so it was better then nothing. So yeah, 6 out of 10 sounds about right.

Depth: 10

Despite the negatives in this game it kept the depth from the original game. The original version had a lot of depth to the game. You had items to collect, power ups to collect, special upgrades to get (you could only pick 1 out of 4) So it was fun to play through the game  again with a different special upgrade. Every stage has secret rooms for you to explore. So you have to revisit all the stages if you want all the items. It should be noted you may have to visit a stage multiple times to get all the items. That added lots of fun to this game. In addition, you could play as Zero some in this game. Though Zero could not fight mavericks and if you died with Zero he will say he is unable to continue and go off for repairs. So yeah, while playing as Zero was limited this is the first X game that you could play as Zero even if it is limited. The depth in this remake was left unchanged. So I feel like the depth rating does not need to be changed. I give the depth of X3 a 10 out of 10. It kept the tradition of Mega Man games having high depth.

Difficulty: 7

This game can be difficulty both for the good reasons and bad reasons. The game is difficult for the good reasons because it can challenge you and force you to get creative on beating bosses as well as getting items. The original version was very difficult. Items were placed in difficult spots that required skills to get them. The enemies often did a lot of damage in the original game so getting hit was always bad. Lot of the Mavericks were fast moving, could charge up, and have very fast attacks so they required skill, reflexes and sometimes luck to beat. Also enemy placement was tough in this game. These reasons are good reasons why the game was difficult as it really challenges you. I like games that do that. The play station version kept that type of difficulty which is the good difficulty.

Now this version is difficult for some bad reasons too. The bad reasons are the stick and sluggish controls. Due to the controls not being as smooth you can easily get hit or killed in this game. The original game did not have any of these problems. But when your dashing its so easy for the controls in this version to slow down thus you miss. I have had the controls to literally almost freeze up or really lag.  When fighting an enemy it seems like there is a delay in reflexes and actions. This can get you hit or killed. This version is difficult for the wrong reasons too.  Its hard when you feel like your fighting the controls as well as the enemies. As I stated the Original version did not have these problems. The game in both versions does try to help you out though by giving you power ups you can use to enhance your power. But while you gain in power so do the enemies.

In my review of the original version I gave the difficulty a very high number. But it seems like the difficulty in this version is wrong for the wrong reasons. The original game earned its difficulty, powerful mavericks, enemy placement, item placement, death traps and etc. While this version has that, it seems more like the difficulty is from the sluggish and lagging controls. Thus, I'm lowering the difficulty to 7 out of 10. You may find that strange I'm lowering it. The thing is the original version earned its high rating and it was for the good reasons. It really challenged your skills, creativity, reflexes, and required luck too. This version seems to be missing that. So I don't think it deserves an 8, 9 or 10 like the original version.

Overall: 7.9
Remember how I said I thought this version was rushed? Here is were I'm going with that. This game was released in 1998 and for a few years it was only in Europe. But then when emulators came out lots of American & Canada gamers were able to play this version. 1998 was a very active year for Capcom in the Mega Man department. In 1998: Mega Man 8, Mega Man X4, This remake of X3, Mega Man & Bass, and Mega Man legends came out. So I think Capcom was really involved in making the other mega man games and did not put a lot of time in remaking X3. The game shows it too.

X4, Mega Man 8 and Legends were made for the Play Station and they did not have the graphic, sound and control issues this game had. It was like Capcom really took time to develop those games. But this version seems kind of sloppy.  The new intro which is cut scenes from X1 and X2 look like they were just put together. I believe that Capcom was thinking lets get the X3 remake out so instead of keeping the original intro lets just put these cut scenes together for the remake.

The controls also make me feel like they did not put a lot of effort in developing this and released it quickly. I guess they wanted to get this version out before they released their other scheduled Mega Man games. The graphics as I mentioned were sloppy. I did not expect the graphics to have problems. Especially since it was a remake of a SNES game. X4 which was also released in 1998 had amazing graphics and the controls were good. X4 is what you would expect a play station game to have. Again this shows how X3 was just remade, rushed and put together.  Also the sound ugh the sound. Why oh why did Capcom change the music in this game. X3 had an unique and amazing sound to it so why change that. Capcom what were you thinking !!!!!!!!!!

Remember how I said X3 was remade again for the Anniversary collection. The anniversary collection is basically a hybrid of the original X3 and this version. But even in the X Anniversary collection. It seems like Capcom fixed the controls and sound in that game.

Now for some positives about this remake. If you missed out on the SNES version of X3 then this would be a decent game to play. The depth in this game is unchanged. Even though I did not like the sound track some people may like the sound track of this version. This game is very colorful. Another thing I like is when you select a boss you get a cut scene they even throw in the classic Mega Man select tune so that was nice.

Overall, Mega Man X3 for play station is not a horrible game but its not as good as the original X3 was. The original X3 was ranked high among experts and regarded as a very good game. The original X3 will always be special and unique it just had that feeling of a great game, which it was. This remake version does not seem to have that feel to it. The depth and colors are nice. But the game seems to suffer in the graphic, replay value, sound and difficulty level. Maybe these will not bother you. If they do not then enjoy this game. Would I recommend this game. Its hard for me to say. I would recommend playing the SNES version of X3 (the original version) Its very good. I will let you be the judge of this game. As I stated maybe you will think this is a good remake or maybe you will be like me as nothing like the original. Overall, I give the remake a 7.9. Its not horrible I have seen worse, I would not say its bad either though it does have its negatives. But its not a solid remake of the original either. So I think 7.9 sounds about right decent but could have been much better.

Nice work, as always. This game actually sounds like a bit of a bad port. I never have understood how developers can put stuff like that out, I mean surely they played it before releasing it and noticed the controls, right? Anyway, good job again with the detail and the writing overall. I really like how you compared the two versions as well.

Keep it up, man.

Eirinn :

Opps just saw were I only enlarged half of the review. I fixed that now so hopefully it will be a lot easier to read.

Yeah Capcom really messed this one up. I think it is cause they had too many titles coming out in 1998: Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man 8, Mega Man X4, Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Power Battle and this one.  My guess is they did not have to time to really test this game and it showed
