This game is the traditional good against evil battle. The tweak to this is the option to choose sides: bad dealing with good, or good fighting against evil. Racer or Cop. Due to its double focus, this game can almost divide in two: one for everything regarding Racers, and one regarding Cops. Each has its unique features, but many things are also shared.

This guide will detail you everything you need to know: the available weapons, the different types of events and, of course, the car roster, everything both for Cop and Racer. It’s a long way ahead, so let’s get going.

WEAPONS

Each mode has four weapons available. Two of them are shared, but the other two are specific to each mode. With repeated use, and via the game’s achievement system, the weapons can be upgraded, being more efficient. Weapons start at level one, and can be upgraded to level three.

A special note to be made here is the “life” of each car. You will see a red vertical bar besides the speedometer, and a green horizontal one above enemy cars (cops while in Racer, racers while in Cop). These bars determine the car’s “life”, so when it is damaged by a weapon or by crashing against something or someone, it will slowly deplete, and if it becomes completely empty, the car will be wrecked. Be sure to always keep an eye both to your bar and the bars of your enemies.

While in Racer, you won’t see the bars of your fellow racers, so you will have to guess according to how much damage the car shows. Big and heavy cars will always be more resilient, so they will be harder to take down.

RACER

Spike Strip

The car will leave behind one or more spike strips. This is the best use for the rear-view mirror: whenever you see an unwanted car approach you, be it a cop or another racer, simply drop one of these and watch them spin out of control. At first, only one spike strip will be deployed, but after upgrading to level two, the strip will be deployed almost instantly, and in level three two stripes are deployed.

EMP

Short for Electromagnetic Pulse, this is a long range weapon. Upon activated, you will lock-on a target, which takes some time, and if the lock-on succeeds, your car will fire the pulse, causing damage to the target. The downfall to this weapon, besides the lock-on time, it’s the fact that it automatically targets the closest car, so you can end up targeting an unwanted car, and if that target goes out of range, the EMP will miss. As you upgrade it, the EMP will take less time to lock-on and will inflict more damage.

Turbo

Exclusive to Racer. A few seconds after activating, it will give you a tremendous boost in acceleration. Of course, only recommended in straight stretches or flat out sections, or you will inevitably crash, stopping the effects. As you upgrade it, its effects last a little longer.

Jammer

Exclusive to Racer. This weapon will disable all weapons from the cops and their mini-map for some time. Good to use when you’re being targeted by an EMP, or when you see a spike strip being deployed right before you (yep, they can be jammed, and disappear if you do jam them), but it cannot disable set roadblocks (though it does reveal their location in your mini-map). Again, the effects last longer as it is upgraded.

COP

Spike Strip

Same effects and upgrades as with Racer. Should be noted that Cop-deployed strips will have blue lights at each end, while Racer-deployed strips will have red lights instead.

EMP

Same effects and upgrades as with Racer. Since you will be the only cop in the chase, even if it doesn’t lock-on the desired target you will still hit a racer, so it’s a slight improvement.

Helicopter

A comrade that gives you a helping hand by getting ahead of the racer(s) and deploying spike strips to stop them. Very useful if they go out of range, but remember, the Helicopter won’t be able to follow them through tunnels, losing their track for a while. As it is upgraded, the Helicopter will stay around longer and deploy more spike strips. Keep track of the Helicopter’s position, as you can end up passing over the spike strip it deployed!

Roadblock

Several units are deployed ahead of the racer(s), forming a nearly impenetrable horizontal line. I say nearly because every roadblock does have a small space where a car can get through unharmed, so try to aim to that point. The roadblocks will appear on your mini-map, and as you upgrade this weapon, stronger and more resilient cars will be lined up, increasing the damage racers sustain when crashing against it.

EVENTS

A total of eight different types of events can be found through the game. Some shared by both Racer and Cop, and some unique to each mode. This makes a total of six types of events available for Racer, and four for Cop.

RACER

Hot Pursuit

The trademark of the game, as its name is featured on the game’s title. The name is self explanatory: you and some more racers are being pursued by the cops. Getting rid of the cops (wrecking them) is rather hard, as more keep coming as you progress through the race. You will have different sets of weapons available, depending on the event. Keep your “life” bar in check and get to the finish line to complete the event.

Time Trial

This is a battle against the clock. You’re given a time limit to reach the finish line. Studying the available shortcuts and exploiting them is a key factor in this type of event, as any second you can shave off your total time is welcome. Of course, try not to crash, or you will lose a lot of time.

Preview

This event lets you have a glimpse of a car belonging to a high category before you have access to it, hence the name. It basically serves the same purpose as Time Trial, reach the finish line before the time limit. Obviously, these events are only at the beginning, when you have a long way ahead to unlock the higher categories.

Race

You can’t be called a racer without this type of event. Same as in Hot Pursuit, but in here no cops will appear to disturb the party.

Duel

In this type of event, you will be presented two cars to choose. Whichever you pick, you will be racing the other one in a 1-vs-1, with no cops or weapons meddling with it. Cross the finish line before your opponent to win the event.

Gauntlet

The hardest type, if I had to pick one. They are a combination of Hot Pursuit and Time Trial. You have to beat a set time, however there will be cops pursuing you. Not every time will you have weapons available, and even if you have them they can come in very poor numbers. Survive the assault from the cops, wreck them if you feel like watching the world burn and cross the finish line in time.

COP

Hot Pursuit

This time, you’re alone pursuing various racers. You will have weapons available, and your goal will be to stop the race, aka wrecking all racers before the finish line.

Rapid Response

The equivalent of Time Trial, but with an added tweak: you will receive time penalties for crashing against walls (two seconds added immediately to your time) or cars (three seconds added immediately to your time). You won’t be directly penalized for wrecking your car, but you will lose a lot more time before re-spawning.

Preview

Same as in Racer. You get the chance to test a very powerful car early on in the game. However, being a Cop, you will receive the same penalties as in Rapid Response.

Interceptor

The only mode unique to Cop. You will have to chase and take down a sole fugitive in the allotted time. It’s the only mode that it’s not point A to point B, instead the fugitive will roam freely, so be extra careful when sending a helicopter or putting up a roadblock, as he can pull a U-turn (180 degrees) and evade them. Seldomly, they will also use weapons, specially the Jammer, to make things more difficult, and will abuse shortcuts if they have the chance or drive in oncoming traffic to confuse you even more.

CARS

Best for last, it’s time to cover the main aspect of the game. Each mode has its own categories, with a similar car roster.

Both modes do have a nitrous system to give the car a boost in acceleration. In Racer mode, you can fill the nitrous by doing any non-recommended actions, such as drifting, driving in oncoming traffic or using slip streams, to mention just some of them. In Cop mode, the nitrous will fill over time, depending on how fast you drive, and will also benefit from slip streams and drifts. It should be noted that, for some reason, Cop consumes nitrous twice as fast as Racer or more while not getting any added benefits.

Be careful, nitrous boosts acceleration, not top speed! It’s more useful when exiting a corner or recovering from a crash to attain a high speed quickly or to not lose speed when facing an uphill. Only use it when going at full speed if the finish line is near (if it exists, of course).

What will be detailed about each car is:

-Name and model year: The name will identify each car, and the model year is only relevant for old cars. 30 years in the past, there existed no road car above 450 CV, while nowadays we have several cars with double that amount or even higher.

-Power: Not as important as in other games, but it helps determining how good the engine is.

-Acceleration: The time that passes until the car reaches 62 mph from a standing start. Gives you a hint of how quick the car can reach its full speed. Cop cars are specifically tuned to reach their top speed quicker, so the declared times are fake in most cases. I’ve measured personally the acceleration of all cop cars, as well as some racer cars that felt different than what was declared, but it’s not a very exact value.

-Drivetrain: Not as important as in other games, but it really means something. Rear wheel drive cars (RWD) are usually harder to control when the power output goes to high levels. All wheel drive cars (AWD) are easier to control, both in asphalt and off-road, and tend to have better acceleration.

-Top Speed: Here things get a little complicated. The declared top speed is the one which appears in the car’s specs, but it can go a tad higher than that. Also, most cars save an extra gear for specific use with nitrous, slip stream and/or turbo. Added to the fact that gearboxes are automatic, there’s no way to alter this aspect, which really hampers the game. For this reason, I will list the declared top speed and put in brackets the clocked top speed while in free roam, with nitrous, long straight stretches and downhills being the only help available.

NOTE #1: I play the PAL version, and even though the speed does change to mph and distance changes to yards, the units for power don’t change. I’ll be using CV, which is nearly equivalent to HP, so it’s not going to make a huge difference.

NOTE #2: Some cars don’t follow the extra gear rule mentioned above. Those who don’t will have the “decent gearbox” comment listed. Only applied to racer cars, as cop cars have completely different gear ratios.

NOTE #3: This game includes several DLC contents. Five of them include new cars: Porsche Unleashed, Lamborghini Untamed, Super Sports, SCPD Rebels and Online Pass. The latter one grants one Racer and one Cop car while granting the ability to play online and is free for download, while the rest must be purchased. The first three include not only new cars, but extra missions and trophies as well. The SCPD Rebels pack only includes a few cars which are available for Cop only, and considering many of them are already available in a different version as Racer cars, I deem it useless and didn’t purchase it. For this reason, the cars included in that pack won’t be analyzed, and will be written like this.

NOTE#4: In Racer, some cars have different versions. These versions have (nearly) the same specs, so basically they serve as palette swaps. To avoid repeating entries, any car and its versions will share the same entry.

Power: 232 CV    Top Speed: 146 (182) mph    Acceleration: 6.20 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Declared top speed is actually 160 mph. Decent gearbox. Very good turning, pretty useful in twisty roads.

Dodge Charger SRT-8 2010

Power: 425 CV    Top Speed: 165 (179) mph    Acceleration: 5.00 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Most powerful car of its category. A heavy car that trades agility for resilience, well suited for Hot Pursuit. Also, it has a high ride height, making it a good choice when going off-road.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X 2010

Power: 291 CV    Top speed: 148 (179) mph    Acceleration: 4.90 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

An average all wheel drive car, very stable at turning and off-road.

Decent gearbox. Doesn’t excel in any particular field, but doesn’t have any downside either. Above average car in general terms.

Nissan 370Z Roadster 2010

Power: 332 CV    Top speed: SECRET    Acceleration: SECRET    Drivetrain: RWD

Decent gearbox. Declared top speed is 165 mph, clocked at 182. Acceleration should be near to 6 seconds. Slow to accelerate, but other than that, I would consider it above average.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2010

Power: 305 CV    Top speed: 160 (179) mph    Acceleration: 4.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Quickest car of its category. As the rival of the Mitsubishi Evolution, it performs similarly in all aspects. Nice to see the hatchback version instead of the traditional sedan.

Performance

Chevrolet Camaro SS 2010

Power: 422 CV    Tops speed: 180 (199) mph    Acceleration: 4.70 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

As all muscle cars, trades agility for resilience, and its ride height makes it a good choice off-road.

Jaguar XKR 2009

Power: 510 CV    Top speed: 174 (200) mph    Acceleration: 4.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Most powerful car of its category. Big and heavy, more useful in Hot Pursuit than the other modes.

BMW M3 E92 2010

Power: 420 CV    Top speed: 183 (201) mph    Acceleration: 4.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Very nice turning, and is also one of the fastest cars of its category, so it’s a very good choice in any mode.

Dodge Challenger SRT-8 2008

Power: 425 CV    Top speed: 170 (201) mph    Acceleration: 4.70 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

As all muscle cars, very resilient but not very agile, and above average when attempting off-road.

Porsche 911 targa 4S 2010

Power: 385 CV    Top Speed: 183 (201) mph    Acceleration: 4.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Accelerates very quickly, I would say in 4.20 up to 62 mph, and continues to accelerate equally quickly up to its declared top speed. If my calculations were right, should be the quickest car in this category.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider 2008

Power: 450 CV    Top speed: 180 (200) mph    Acceleration: 4.40 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Quickest car in its category in terms of declared acceleration. Small and light, it’s actually quite clumsy when turning.

Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake 2010

Power: 750 CV    Top speed: 200 (219) mph    Acceleration: 3.70 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Most powerful car of its category, or at least I award it this recognition. Decent Gearbox. Much better turning than any other supercar. Very resilient too, excellent choice for Hot Pursuit.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 2010

Power: 450 CV    Top speed: 193 (217) mph    Acceleration: 3.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Very agile, as expected from its light weight.

Absurdly fast, and much better at turning than its little brother.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera 2010

Power: 562 CV    Top speed: 201 (218) mph    Acceleration: 3.40 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Lighter and a bit more powerful, the Superleggera is quicker and more agile than the regular Gallardo.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series 2009

Power: 661 CV    Top speed: 199 (222) mph    Acceleration: 3.70 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Decent gearbox, and also decent turning. Too bad its heavy weight hampers its tremendous power.

Porsche 918 Spyder Concept Study 2010

Power: SECRET    Top speed: 199 (218) mph    Acceleration: 3.20 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Real life declared power is 616 for the internal combustion engine alone, and 900 CV including the electric engines. I doubt it uses the full power in the game, but that remains a mystery. Quickest car in its category. Decent gearbox.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2006 (SCPD Rebels)

Exotic

Lamborghini Murciélago LP 650-4 Roadster 2010 (Super Sports)

Power: 650 CV    Top speed: 205 (231) mph    Acceleration: 3.40 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Power: 621 CV    Top speed: 204 (226) mph    Acceleration: 3.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

The Convertible version is available through the DLC pack, and is slightly slower in acceleration, or at least so is shown in the declared specs. The heaviest cars in the game, they are a force to be reckoned with in Hot Pursuit.

Lamborghini Diablo SV 1996 (Lamborghini Untamed)

Power: 510 CV    Top speed: 204 (238) mph    Acceleration: 3.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Tied for fastest car in its category. Incredibly agile, but not surprising stemming from a Lambo. Insanely fast for his time and category. Gotta love the hidden headlamps.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento (Lamborghini Untamed)

Power: 562 CV    Top speed: 201 (232) mph    Acceleration: 2.50 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Being ultra light weight, it’s the quickest car in its category and is also very agile. Those vertical exhausts should give a hint about how radical the car is. If you were wondering, model year is 2010.

Ford GT 2006

Power: 550 CV    Top speed: 205 (229) mph    Acceleration: 3.60 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

More resilient than most of the category roster, or at least that’s the vibe it inspires.

McLaren MP4-12C

Power: SECRET    Top speed: SECRET    Acceleration: SECRET    Drivetrain: RWD

Why does this car have almost all specs hidden? Anyway, power output is somewhere around 600 CV, declared top speed is 208 mph, clocked at 228, acceleration is close to 4 seconds and, in case you were wondering, production year is 2011. I should add it has nice turning skills.

Porsche Carrera GT 2006

Power: 612 CV    Top speed: 201 (238) mph    Acceleration: 3.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Tied for fastest car in its category. Acceleration is a tad quicker than 3.80 seconds. Very clumsy when turning.

Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 2006

Power: 631 CV    Top speed: 211 (232) mph    Acceleration: 3.40 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Would have expected a higher clocked top speed.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss 2009

Power: 641 CV    Top speed: 217 (232) mph    Acceleration: 3.40 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Again, higher clocked top speed expected. Acceleration is more like 3.80 or so.

Power: 678 CV    Top speed: 217 (233) mph    Acceleration: 3.20 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Decent gearbox, and once again, more clocked top speed expected.

Aston Martin One-77 2010

Power: SECRET    Top speed: 221 (229) mph    Acceleration: SECRET    Drivetrain: RWD

Power output is 750 CV, making it the most powerful car of its category. Acceleration is close to 3.80 seconds. Decent gearbox, but that also means not much more top speed than declared. Nice turning too.

Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce 2009

Power: 661 CV    Top speed: 209 (233) mph    Acceleration: 3.10 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Expected more stemming from the name SuperVeloce (Veloce is Italian for Fast). Quick at acceleration though.

Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR 2008

Power: 600 CV    Top speed: 202 (233) mph    Acceleration: 3.50 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Feels clumsy when turning.

Lamborghini Reventón 2007 (SCPD) / Roadster 2010

Power: 661 CV    Top speed: 205 (229) mph    Acceleration: 3.40 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Same engine as the SuperVeloce, but somehow not as fast, even though is presented as superior to any Murciélago ever made. The DLC version has the LP 640 engine, but doesn’t seem to affect the performance.

Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition 2006 (SCPD)

Hyper

Gumpert Apollo S 2009 (Super Sports)

Power: 700 CV    Top speed: 224 (259) mph    Acceleration: 3.00 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Astonishing turning capabilities. Accelerates insanely quickly too. Benefits of being light weight taken to the highest level.

Koenigsegg CCX 2006

Power: 806 CV    Top speed: 242 (259) mph    Acceleration: 3.10 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Decent gearbox. Not specially agile when turning.

Koenigsegg Agera 2010

Power: 806 CV    Top speed: 242 (258) mph    Acceleration: 3.10 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

It really demonstrates why it’s presented as the successor of the CCX. Again, decent gearbox.

Koenigsegg CCXR EDITION 2008

Power: 1018 CV    Top speed: 250 (258) mph    Acceleration: 2.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Decent gearbox, like its little brother and its successor.

McLaren F1 1994

Power: 618 CV    Top speed: 240 (261) mph    Acceleration: 3.20 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Fastest production car from 1993 to 2005. Decent gearbox. Less than 3 seconds up to 62 mph, and only car I’ve noticed to do it solely in first gear. Very agile at turning.

Bugatti Veyron 2008 (SCPD) / Grand Sport 2009

Power: 1001 CV    Top speed: 253 (258) mph    Acceleration: 2.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Fastest production car in the world from 2005 to 2007. Very clumsy when turning. Decent gearbox though.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport 2010 (Super Sports)

Power: 1200 CV    Top speed: 258 mph    Acceleration: 2.50 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Fastest production car in the world since 2010, created with the sole purpose of reclaiming the title Bugatti lost against Shelby Supercars three years prior. An absolute monster: excruciatingly fast (it hardly goes over its declared top speed, which is already a lot), accelerates absurdly quickly and only has the downside of being a little clumsy when turning due to its heavy weight, something that in turn makes it very resilient.

COP

Traffic Police

Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor 2008

Power: 450 CV    Top speed: 197 (218) mph    Acceleration: 3.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Above average turning, even for an AWD. Insanely quick at accelerating and fast for the time it was released.

Porsche 911 turbo S Cabriolet 2010

Power: 750 CV    Top speed: 200 (219) mph    Acceleration: 3.70 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Most powerful car of its category, or at least I award it this recognition. Decent Gearbox. Much better turning than any other supercar. Very resilient too, excellent choice for Hot Pursuit.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 2010

The Convertible version is available through the DLC pack, and is slightly slower in acceleration, or at least so is shown in the declared specs. The heaviest cars in the game, they are a force to be reckoned with in Hot Pursuit.

Lamborghini Diablo SV 1996 (Lamborghini Untamed)

Power: 510 CV    Top speed: 204 (238) mph    Acceleration: 3.80 seconds    Drivetrain: RWD

Power: 661 CV    Top speed: 209 (233) mph    Acceleration: 3.10 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Hyper

Power: 1001 CV    Top speed: 253 (258) mph    Acceleration: 2.70 seconds    Drivetrain: AWD

Vanelan : I never checked the category, mainly because I assumed posting this from the game's page would automatically give it the category it belongs to. Thanks for pointing this out, I'll fix it and be more careful in my upcoming projects.

EX Palen : Yea...the RGR to forum integration is strange like that. ^^;
Its probably why most of the guides and reviews have no subforums.

Vanelan : And now I seemingly screwed up everything. I assigned the category, but now somehow it isn't linked to the game.

How come I cannot edit the game's ID? Doesn't make sense.

There's no box. It's like editing any other thread in any other forum.

Edit:
It just occurred to me...you can link to RGR games when editing....not VGR...

The option probably is missing since its for PS3.

Are you sure the cops are the good guys .

Anyway, while this does not look like my kind of game, I am sure I would be well-served by your guide. It is very highly detailed for both groups, their weapons (unique and shared) are shown and how an improvement can drastically change them, and you even show the strenghts and weaknesses of the cars. Kudos!

Other than prolonging gameplay, is there any point on choosing either side?

janus : It surely won't be your kind of game. You can start a drift by simply letting the gas go, so you either take corners at full speed or drift. Plus, the automated gearbox is very crappy, I've sometimes been drifting on redline and the engine sounded like it was about to explode. There are better racing games out there, the only reason to really play this game is to be an outlaw or the law.

The point on choosing either side? Well, I would go with Racer all the way, for all the different game modes it offers. Switching to Cop brings almost no news, only the new point of view, two new weapons and a unique mode. I don't think it pays off being Cop when Racers have a ton more types of events. If anything, use it as a training ground when going online or aim for the trophies.
