Do you usually have interest in school dances? Why or why not? Have you ever been to one? How was it?

I'm almost never interested in school dances, it's been that way since I got introduced to them in middle school. Some of my friends aren't either, so there are times where I just hang out with them instead of going to the dance XD The main reason I'm not interested is because they just aren't my thing. Even if I go with friends it doesn't feel like something I'd want to go to more than once or twice.

There's only one school dance I've ever been interested in, and it was a fancy one for my school's leadership class. I went to it with a few friends of mine and it was a blast! It lasted over 5 hours. We had a big meal, a prayer, a lot of crazy dancing under a disco ball, and all the guys were wearing the exact same type of uniform (since we were supposed to). It's probably the only school dance I'd ever have a ton of interest in. I know that some of that is the same as other school dances but it was more interesting for me because it was more exclusive and there was less to worry about.

See, I never really liked School Dances either. Yesterday, somebody started playing that ear-splitting Silento song at recess, and everybody but me ran to a stereo and started dancing while taking turns idiotically. The entire outside was absolutely filled with kids screaming "NOW WATCH ME WHIP AND NAE NAE" obnoxiously loud, while I just sat in a corner in a 4-square center with my hand on my forehead. School dances make me feel dumb and be sick.

weeniedog12 : Now watch me... turn that song off. I'm not a fan of that song either, I mean I used to like it but now it's just overused and I'm not obsessed with it like many peers of mine are.

Luckily for me, that song wasn't around during my school dance last year. But I'm sure that this year, that song has been played at least once during a school dance. That would make the dance turn annoying for a few minutes. In fact, it was played during a pep assembly yesterday!

I swear, that song used to be fine when everybody didn't obsess over it. Even when I'm on the bus riding to school or back home, everybody is screaming "WATCH ME WHIP NOW WATCH ME SUPERMAN". In that case, I get some headphones, lay back, and start reading up on Wings of Fire.

I've been to three school dances in my lifetime, and my experiences kind of vary greatly.

The first one was in 7th grade, I went with a female friend and basically it was awkward. I really didn't know how to dance to anything except for that song that tells you "2 hops this time *noise* 2 hops this time..." you know the song haha. Anyways, it was a long and admittedly uneventful night. I went home, and really felt like it was the most boring event I had ever gone to - and pretty much promised myself I'd never go to another dance.

Then, 11th grade happened. I went to prom what my girlfriend of the time, and boy it was awesome. I know a lot of guys act like prom is stupid, but they are lying to you. It was an absolute blast! I still couldn't dance any better than I could back in 7th grade, but at this point I was confident enough in life to actually just not care what other people think - much to the dismay of my girlfriend of the time haha. My buddies and I actually got really into it, and we took the center of the dance floor and we basically did the worlds worst dance moves the best. A lot of people were laughing, then they joined in and it was a blast! Never went to after prom because I had other priorities that night, but the next day in school: everyone was talking about it. It was definitely worth renting the over priced tuxedo and paying the ridiculous $100 fee to get in. I pretty much thought that it would be the last time I ever went to an event this cool.

Finally, Senior prom arrived. With the last prom being so much fun, this was destined to go one of two ways: Be the best experience ever; be the worst experience ever. So, I'm planning with my girlfriend of the time (different from the last one, this one was a lot more fun and joined in on the shenanigans) and we decide to rent a limousine with my best friend, and one of his girlfriends best friends. Before I go on, if prom is in your foreseeable future, get your friends together and rent a limo. It's only the best experience ever, trust me, just make sure you're loud. Anyways back on track, fast forward to the part where we're on the way to prom. So five others and myself are in the limo, and we found out quickly that they had free soda and champagne glasses. Obviously we were feeling fancy, so after a toast to the driver (he said he never had a group of people do a toast for him before, so we made it happen) we started drinking our soda with our pinky out - super fancy like. Then we were hootin' and hollerin, and on the way out he actually complimented us saying that too many people act calm - like what's the point of going all out if you're just going to be quiet. We loved that guy.

So the prom actually begins, and we're jamming out. All of our dates were really cool, and they were doing everything we wanted to do - which was mostly act like an idiot. This time though, I came prepared. I had studied dances for five months with my best friends sister, who is a dance coach. She taught me how not to look like a total idiot on the dance floor. So we're all dancing, having a good time, the slow dance part was really the only part we ever slowed down. After prom, we went to after prom. Boy, I am disappointed I didn't go the last time, because this thing was next level. It was themed after Las Vegas, so we had Texas Hold 'Em Poker, we had blackjack, we had a live band, corn hole, laser tag, a bounce house, bounce house volley ball, bull riding, and a bunch of other awesome stuff. I ended up coming in 4th that night in total chips earned, too! (I'm a beast at bluffing, it turns out. Or just really lucky)

Anyways, eventually the night had to end... and I was honestly depressed it did. So, stories aside, I hated dances because of one bad experience. Man, am I glad I gave it another shot!

If you don't like dances, it's okay, I was the same way. Just don't be afraid to be daring and do what you want to do. You're paying to have fun, you might as well have fun! If you're a male, don't listen to when people say prom is bad. They're liers, get your buddy and get stupid!

Oh, and get a limo... and go to after prom when it comes up. These are tips to success, I promise.

Skilledtree : Just going to a school dance with a female friend sounds awkward, let alone having a lack of dancing skills. But even though that was uneventful and boring, you're probably glad you went that first time so you had an idea of how those school dances can be set up

That's a pretty inspiring story! Even though I'm not interested in any school dance, now I think that I'd like to try going to prom during my junior and senior years of high school! Maybe my friends and I won't act stupid, but we can definitely get crazy and have a nice time if we're in a great mood for that dance.

I've never had a good experience with school dances. The only time I've ever gone to one was in the 8th grade. It was bad because the dance had to end half an hour earlier because all the idiot 6th graders decided it would be funny to slap each other on the back of the neck. It soon spread and became a serious issue. Because of that, the principal had to come in and yell at everyone to call their parents and leave immediately. A complete waste of $5 dollars in my opinion.

And in high school, I really don't see a reason to go either. I am not discouraged to go because of my experience in middle school, but the pictures of homecoming and prom in the yearbook are repulsive to say the least. It's picture after picture of people twerking and gyrating on one another, and that just doesn't strike me as something to take part in. Also, the themes are quite strange as well. One year, it was centered around a Nile/Egyptian theme (everyone said it was horrible).  Unless I were to go to a dance with just friends (which would make it more exciting in my opinion), I don't see much of a reason to go. I don't have any dancing skills, I'm extremely introverted, and I don't have a date either. My parents and friends are always hassling me to take advantage of the opportunity and enjoy the memories, but I feel like I'd be better of without it. It really isn't meant for everyone because some people just aren't comfortable with putting themselves in that setting.

I am never interested in school dances since there are other things to do that interests me more. I am not the type to dance or have the spotlight to participate in these type of events. I remember being forced to go to a school dance in elementary school and it was meh to me at most. I never went to my dances from junior high and high school. Prom was a big no-no for me especially from its high costs with paying a ticket, dressing up formally, being seated at a table, paying a limo, and so forth. Too much early unnecessary planning for me! I spent my times doing something else during those days. Not to also mention the inappropriate dancing that people are doing these days and it makes me feel uncomfortable especially with my newbie dance moves. Heck, babies can dance better than me these days haha. Dances are not for everybody in general and it's okay to do something else besides going to these dances.

I went to 2 dances. The first time was in middle school, some guy I never really talked to invited me, the day before. I wasn't really planning on going, but I accepted. Then, he just danced with other people, it was weird. I just kind of hung out, watching people. It was boring, and weird.

The second time I went with some friends, even though none of us wanted anything to do with dancing. So, I brought a jar of Apple Butter with us, and we just hung out, trying it on all the snacks that were laid out. We tried it on cookies, crackers, cheese, celery, even in drinks. That was fun. Turns out, Apple Butter on Ritz Crackers, is the best. XD

I didn't even go to my senior Prom or Homecoming. Heh, even passed up my High School Reunion! XD

Razor-987 : I've noticed that school dance themes are usually pretty weird. However, my school's Homecoming dance this year had a pretty cool theme. It was a Broadway theme, so they had a red carpet you could walk on and the girls on the Homecoming Court had Broadway-style dresses they wore to school to get in the spirit of the theme. I didn't go to the dance but it seems like it would be one of the better school dances out there. I agree that school dances aren't meant for everyone. I'm introverted as well (somewhat).

F. Starr : It bugs me when people invite each other to things but then they don't even hang out with each other there. I wouldn't enjoy just watching people have fun without me, even though that's what I did for much of my childhood.

School dances were a little different in middle school. It was just a bunch of friends standing around talking with each other and listening to music. Then most of the time if we weren't dancing with a girl or anything we would go off and play some basketball for awhile.

Once I got into my Jr and Sr year in High School, it was fun to either be asked by a girl or ask a girl to go to one. Get dressed up, go out to dinner and have a nice time with your date. It's an experience that I encourage you to experience, even if dances aren't always your cup of tea. Especially your Senior prom. It's a good memory that I have all these years later and most people that haven't gone that I've spoken to, regretted not going once they were an older adult.

Jordanv78 : I wondered if there was a difference between middle school dances and high school dances. Playing basketball during a school dance sounds really fun It sounds more fun than playing basketball in a more normal situation, and I don't even know why

I'd really like to be able to go to Senior prom. During my senior year I'm hoping to have as many great experiences with friends as I can before heading off to college the following year (or the year after that if money is a problem).

I never really got into school dances. I was never a fan of dancing in the first place, and I didn't have a date or nothing, so I didn't see any point in going. I stayed at home on those days.

It must be an Anglo-Saxon thing as there has never been a school dance anywhere I have studied. And if there had been one I highly doubt I would have participated. I was a lone wolf in K-12 and I do not think I would have had the guts to ask a girl (and even less a guy) out.

Wow school dances over there suck. Over here we have a burns supper in January (It is a night dedicated to the famous poet Robert Burns) where we gathered and participate in Scottish country dancing ( aka Ceilidh). It was really fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Being dressed up in a skirt (kilt) never seemed so manly. There wasn't any awkward standing around either because 1) you were forced to dance by the teachers and 2)people actually wanted to dance. We also had a meal (I was the last to get mine as I was at the end table and closest to the exit.

I danced with at least 10-12 people which is the whole point of a ceilidh. It is encouraged to dance with different people and not the same person also some of the dances required around 4-8 people.

I've enjoyed school dances and it's been a long time since I've been to one.

I was a guy who was watching all the girls dance and all the boyfriends sit on the sideline and not dance.  I had nothing to lose as a freshman at 14 so I jumped in and left-right white-guy shuffled with the junior and senior girls.  They loved it.  They really enjoyed me out there trying and I suddenly had a group of females who appreciated the effort and payed attention to me.

Safe to say I learned to actually dance by practicing and messing around.  This was before youtube so I didn't have the extra help.

I dance now whenever I go out with friends or my wife.  My wife would rather sit at the bar and drink and she doesn't mind me dancing with random women.  It's a great way to get attention.

Dances were fun.  I had a blast at them.

I never cared for any of the dances in my schools so I never went to any and if I was at a regular event that happened to have dancing in them, I would always go and find the other activities in the area, don't care for dancing whether its along or with others.

When I was in school we'd have I think at least three dances a year. I usually went. I was always cursed with liking girls that didn't like me. At least not like a boyfriend. I'd always go after the prettiest girls and ignore the nice girls that actually liked me. I was quite a shallow cat at times I guess. So I'd go solo and meet some friends. Then wait for slow songs and ask for dances. So the pretty girls would dance with me because I was a nice guy but they sure didn't ever want to make out. oh well..

When I was a junior I was actually popular enough to get elected to the court for the 'snowball' dance. I showed up, flaked out and left. Dud.

Finally when I was a senior I took this girl who was my girlfriend in sixth grade to prom. My parents loved her and she was literally top of the class. So they let me use their car and paid for dinner which was very cool. She actually just got married finally about a month ago. So happy for her. She's a minister! I really knew how to pick them...what was the question?

So I have mostly positive experiences I guess. I definitely learned how to take no for an answer. HAHA

I always went to the dances in middle and high school. I never had a partner and only ever danced/slow danced during the dedicated band banquets, but it was always fun. It was one of the biggest things I missed when I started college, since homecoming was just a game, not a dance lol. But that's who I am, I am content with just being around my friends even if I'm not participating most of the time. "Clubs," however, are a disgrace. The music is so loud your whole body vibrates and the lighting is just perfect so that you can't see a thing.
Senior prom was also pretty fun, I was even runner up Prom King. Good times. Ours was held in an area at a hotel, but the place was decked out and the food was great. Just like a high budget prom scene in a movie lol.

I always went to dances regardless of whether or not I had a date to go with. I didn't care. I wasn't the most social person so having music going on and stuff made that easier for me. I had my group of friends I was close with and we kept to ourselves and had our own fun at the dance.
