Earlier today, I replied to a "hardest game" thread, and XCOM was my choice. It made me want to play it, and after doing so, I kind of wanted to see if others on Vizzed also play. Before I get into that, I just want to explain to those who haven't played it the awesomeness of this game.
Okay, first things first, if you played it on console, I'm sorry. The console port was kind of crappy. I mean, it looks good, but I am aware that it would freeze semi-consistently. It borderline drove me nuts, because it would freeze on about 5% of the loading screens on PS3. It's controls were... eh? Not great, not horrible. It's just a few minor things I guess, but the big thing in my eyes is that the iron man mode was easily abused by simply turning off your console before the alien turns ended - which take longer on console than PC. It defeats the entire purpose of iron man mode, but once you figure it out, it's hard to control yourself when you want to save your colonel from a totally bologna kill.
Anyways, onto the glorious PC version. I remember the first time I played this game (luckily on PC), I put the game on "classic iron man" mode. Basically, that's hard mode, but not the hardest mode. I got through the tutorial, went on my first mission, and lost all of my soldiers. On the very first mission. Yes, it was game over, before it even started. So, I've always liked a good challenge that felt fun. The game offers just incredible fun - even though it's so punishingly difficult.
Like, during my first few campaigns, I always went the route of choosing the money rewards for the abduction missions. Well, if you've never played XCOM, here's a great tip for if you ever do (and you should): PICK THE ENGINEERS FIRST. Seriously, this is huge. Engineer reward allows you to create weapons, armor, items, rooms, aircraft, and satellites cheaper. It's huge, trust me on this one. Also, when you decide to go on Classic or Impossible mode because you have mastered normal mode - throw everything you learned away. Seriously, you're about to feel like you're starting over. After beating the game on classic, I went to normal mode and it was total easy mode. Then, I went back to classic, and I got totally destroyed because I had replaced my old habits with bad normal mode habits. Oh, and choose Europe as your starting location - trust me on this one.
The game is totally famous for being hard. I mean, HARD. It's fun though, and I seriously hope if you haven't played it that you at least check it out (It's rated M for mature though, if you're a younger reader).
So, if you have played it before, I am interested: Did you like it? Did you hate it? Why?
I love this game. It's the hardest game I own, but it's one of the funnest games I own. Earlier today, I replied to a "hardest game" thread, and XCOM was my choice.
