For the longest, scientists couldn't tell what black streaks on the surface of Mars were that appear every summer becaue it was too small to photograph, but recently they were able to use new technology to determine that it could be salt, which would have been left over from evaporated water.

Of course, it isn't clear where the water would be coming from, but this theory is a huge step towards whatever reason we are exploring Mars.

Yeah I heard about that the other day. I'd been wondering for a long time if there was water on Mars, and now there's an answer. I wonder how much water could be on Mars? That will be interesting to find out.

gamerforlifeforever2 : If it all evaporates at the end of the season, then there can't be a lot or else some would have stayed behind. The trick would be to find how much water is underground.

it would be cool to colonize mars like in Cowboy Bebop because there are WAY too many people here and people just keep pumping out units

Some foul mouths say that NASA waited for Matt Damon's movie to come out to talk about their discovery..

Anyway if this proves to be true this is amazing news. Let's wait for further investigation to make sure it IS water first.

janus : Maybe they found out while they were there filming. They did film there right?

It's probably just a coincidence unless there's some conspiracy going on.

The biggest issues are,is it frozen water or other frozen matter? And even if were water,Mars has no real atmosphere of its own so it cannot be retained. It may have traveled underground, but until we can explore an alien planet safely,we will never know. Hell,we can barely explore the moon.

Oldschool777 : It is now more a question of budget than capacity. Moon exploration was, sadly, mostly an ego contest between the US and the USSR. If space exploration/flight were to be liberalized more, then we could found (privately) a mission to Mars and maybe find out.

That is true, considering most of the world is in economic doo-doo. The Russian space agency is not what it once was and neither is NASA.
There are a few private companies dabbling in space, but their space more like the technical definition of it. Maybe we need another ego-stroking contest. Competition is healthy.

I swear I read in textbooks years ago that there was water on Mars...This is far from new news. Scientists knew decades ago that there were polar caps, ergo: water or a similar substance on the planet? Maybe I am wrong and thinking of some other planet though...but hey, a little research never hurts before posting something! (Yep, just googled it randomly, and found an article from 2011 even that proves that Mars had water.) So I don't see this as breaking news, but rather, "tell me something I don't know". But it is nice to see others thinking of colonization of another planet. It would be great for overpopulation.
