Shhhh, be very quite we are hunting ducks. No, not really, but I'm going to be reviewing a well known NES classic called Duck Hunt.

Story: 4

Okay there really isn't much here plot wise. Its Duck season and you as the player must shoot the required number of ducks per stage to advance. However if you miss your hunting dog is not afraid to heckle you by laughing. Can you shoot the ducks or will you be a laughing stock courtesy   of the dog.  Duck Hunt also had another game included with for the NES and that was were you could shoot skits. There really wasn't much of a plot in the side game. The player just has to shoot skits to get points.

Okay as it should be no surprise, there really isn't much to say about this plot. Its a shooter game and most of these type of games do not have much of a plot line. However, there are some things here that keep the rating from being lower. Having to deal with a heckling dog bumps the rating up. To me that shows creativity. I feel like the game introduces the game pretty well. We know what the game is about, and what the goal is. In the Skit side game its just your basic shoot skits for points. Nothing real special there. I give the story a 4 out of 10. It does not deserve higher because you are not going after anybody, no real bad guy (unless you consider the dog to be a bad guy for laughing at your goof ups).

Graphics and Controls: 8

Duck Hunt really shines in its graphics. The backgrounds are the right color and really showed what the NES was real capable of doing. The trees look like trees and are nice and green. The grass looks right. I also like the blue sky with a few clouds as a background that was a nice touch. The ducks are colorful and are based off of the Mallard species of ducks, they are either green or blue just like the real species is. The dog is the right color too. The sprites in this game are very good. The Ducks have a death look when they have been shot which is hilarious. But how can forget the laugh of the dog. The makers of this game having the dog laugh was a bonus and really what made this game infamous. The graphics in the Skit game are also very good. The hills look like they are supposed too.

The controls are nothing fancy as the control is the Nintendo zap gun. Its pretty basic. What you have to do is aim with the zap gun and pull the trigger. So there really is not much to say about the controls. The zap gun does feel smooth for this type of game though. At the end of the day I give the graphics a solid 8 out of 10.

Sounds: 8

There are not a lot of sounds in this game. But the sounds the game does have are nicely done. The sound the zap gun makes is very good it sounds like a gun is supposed to in the video game world. The flying sound the ducks make is very good. Also the game has a jingle when you shoot a duck to let you know that you hit the duck. In the Skit game the skits make an explosion sound to let you know you blasted the skits. However, the best sound in this game is the dog laughing. If you miss the dog will laugh at you. The laugh though is a loud laugh so that really bumps up the rating. For a game that has limited sounds, the sounds in this game are golden. I give it an 8 out of 10.

Replay Value and Depth 6

The Replay Value is good in this game. I remember when I first got this game. Being able to use the zap gun was a plus and made this game really fun. I remember as a young child having fun with this game. After I played some of my other favorite games such as Mega Man 2 and 3 and Super Mario I and II. I would play this game. My parents even enjoyed this game and played it a lot too. It became a family game were we would spend family time trying to get the highest score. We also played the skit game too. So this game does have decent replay value. As I have gotten older I have moved on to other games. But, once in awhile this is a fun game to play because it offers something different.

The Depth in this game is decent for this type of the game. There are no power ups to get in this game, no items to get or anything like that. But the game does have several levels and gets harder as the levels increase. Also including the skit game also adds depth to this game. The player can advance to many levels so you can spend a good deal of time playing the Duck Hunt game or the skit side game. I give both the Replay and Depth value a 6 out of 10. Getting to use the zap gun is fun, having different levels and the side game is what bumps up the rating. I don't believe I can give the rating higher cause there are no items or power ups to collect.

Difficulty: 8

Now this game on paper looks like an easy game. Its so easy to think oh its simple just shoot the ducks or skits in this game no big deal. That, though is easier said then done. At first the game is easy you might only get one duck on the screen. But as you get points more ducks appear on the screen. You as the player have to shoot them all down.

It is so easy to miss a duck when there are multiple ones on the screen. I have done it several times. You only get 3 chances to hit a duck. But if you have 3 or more on the screen ugh it can be a big problem. Because you have to rapidly shoot them all down, which makes it easy to miss one. Also as you get more points and the levels increase. The ducks fly faster and can be gone in seconds again adding to the difficulty. I remember one time I made it to a higher level and had a high number of points. The next level saw the ducks flying from every direction and very fast too. If you blink you will miss no joke. So this game really tests your reflexes more than anything.

Also if you miss a duck your dog, will heckle you by laughing loud at you. If you  miss to many ducks you will get a game other and right before you do the dog will laugh at you. I also want to think he holds up signs too while laughing at you. So this game does not look to be difficult but it really is. I kind of like games that test your skills and reflexes like this one does. I give the difficulty an 8 out of 10.

Overall: 8

I got this game as a dual pack. In the 80s Nintendo put this with the Super Mario Bros game. The cartridge was Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. There for awhile it came with NES systems. I remember playing this game a lot when I was kid. As I stated after playing some of my favorites me and my parents would play this game. We would see who could get the highest score. We also would aggravated when the hound dog laughed at us. Over the years this game has become a classic. But it is forever remember for the laughing dog.  We would also play the skit game too.

The graphics, sound and difficulty are very good in this game. I really like Nintendo having the dog laugh at you goofing up its so funny but can make you aggravated at the same time. This is one of the first games were you could use the zapper so that makes it more special. There really isn't nothing wrong with this game. The story line and depth may not be much but that is to be expected for this type of game.

Overall I give Duck Hunt a good score of 8 out of 10. This is a good game and a classic game. It would be a great game to play as a family. So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. It is a fun game to play and one that can be enjoyed for all ages from the young to the old. It would be a great game to introduce to new video game players. I hope you enjoy this game

I haven't played this game much, but when I did play it, the game was so fun. I also got aggravated at the laughing dog when I played, and some of the time I didn't even think it was funny.

Anyway, nice review! This is the first review of yours I've read and I'm impressed. You made such a long review for such a simple game and made the review interesting! I like that you mentioned the laughing dog so many times, it really is what made this game so well-known XD

Keep up the nice work!

Excellent work on your reviews as always. As expected, your review is incredibly informative and detailed throughout every aspect of the game. I like the fact that you clearly elaborate all your points and provide examples and explanations as to why each part of the game received the score it did. Believe it or not, not all reviewers explain why a portion of their review received an 8 as opposed to a 10, so well done on that.

Altogether, this review was a great read, and you did an incredible job of informing us on the play-ability of this game and highlighting all of its positive and negative qualities. Excellent work, I look forward to reading your next review.
