In honor of Memorial Day, I have decided to host a creative writing competition. Now, before I get into the rules and the guidelines, let me explain just what Memorial Day is.

Memorial Day is not to be mixed up with Veteran's Day; there is a distinct difference in the meaning behind these days. Veteran's Day is the day the United States uses to honor the Veterans of it's country military. Memorial Day is used to honor those that are fallen. Basically, to put it quite simply, Memorial Day is used to honor fallen veterans, and Veteran's is used to observe the living ( mostly ) , but the fallen as well.

So, now that I have gotten the explanation of the difference in the Holidays out of the way, let me talk about the Creative Writing Contest.

The goal of this contest is to test your ability at creative writing. That means that poetry, short stories, letters in the perspective of somebody else, anything of that nature goes. ( If you have questions about if a certain style is allowed, then just shoot me a PM and ask. ) You don't have to be American to write a piece, as long as it follows the topic, I don't mind what country you are from.

The topic is this: From the perspective of somebody else, write a creative piece talking about a fallen veteran that has affected your life in some kind of way. A good example of what you could do is a short story about a mother telling her children about their father, who fell in combat, or a letter from a fallen veteran to a family member to read after they have passed, just to name a few.

All participants will receive a 500 Viz prize just for participating.
The Grand Prize will be a Steam game of your choice from 14 choices, or 25k Viz

1st place will receive a random steam game, or 10,000 Viz
2nd place will receive 5,000 Viz
3rd place will receive 2,500 Viz

You may enter as many times as you'd like, and you can win multiple times. There will be other Viz awards for best letter, best short story, and other categories, so feel free to make as many pieces of work as you'd like.

Post your entries here, but 1 at a time, to make it easier for me to grade.

The deadline to enter is at 2 AM Site time on 5/26/2015, since that is midnight my time, and the end of Memorial Day.

I look forward to seeing everybody's entries. And please, stay respectful.

thing1 : Awesome!  I love this.  I'll be entering as many times as possible today.  Here's my first entry:

I call it: "From Bombs to Beauty"

Over Iraq flew a bomber plane
With your father tucked inside
And on his mind was the heavy rain
Of allies who had died.

But through it all, he would not forget
His family waiting here;
Not just us, but everyone
That was to him near and dear.

But despite his efforts to survive
He never made it home
A bullet hit the windshield
And he began to foam.

But before his life on Earth expired
His warrior's heart did manage
To bring the plane down to the place
That would cause the greatest damage.

So never stop your fighting, child
But direct it at a place
That will save your fellow comrades
And bring them back to base.

THE BATTLE OF THE NORTH SEA

      By: Sauron422416
A short tale of a brave sailor named Joseph Ashburn who fought in the The Battle of the North Sea. He showed great patriotism and was a true veteran as he fought for his country...

The white winter snow fell through the night, the cold yet refreshing breeze slowly blew on the fallen leaves, and the layer of snow covered the road and pavement. There were two children, a boy and a girl; but these names will not be included in this tale, for even today they remain anonymous. Their mother however was named Betsy Ross who was indeed credited to sewing the first...American Flag; but, right now she is in Philadelphia, sewing it right now...

As a result, their grandmother was set to babysit the two pesky kids, but when it was time to slumber, they could not fall asleep. So, Grandma as they called her, told them the unknown story of her daughter's  second husband, as he fought in the infamous American Revolution. This second husband was Joseph Ashburn, a sailor, of which this tale speaks of...
Now Joseph was a sailor and was part of the navy, and Betsy married him in 1777 after the death of her first husband (John Ross, an Anglican) in 1772 due to an explosion which marked the start of the American Revolution. He loved sailing and fancied to venture into the unknown depths of the world.
One day, as he was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, something peculiar was happening. Usually, the birds would be flying happily in the sunlit sky, or maybe sitting on the ship's outer rim...but today there were no where to be found. Joseph took note of this and decided to be cautious and careful. "Nay, although 'tis thy awfully weird, but nothing will stop me from going thee." he replied out loud, which was a bad idea, for their were enemies lurking; like predators thirsting upon its prey. He purposed to explore east but, a great peril stood as an obstacle on his path to accomplish his quest...something that not even someone as powerful as a fortune teller, could predict.
However, his quest?  His purpose? The military sent him to explore eastwards which unknown to neither of them, the British (their enemies) not only kept watch of Great Britain, but also the North Sea which was a sea north of Ireland. They originally planned to enter the North Sea (which they thought during that time the British did not patrol that area, they planned to enter Great Britain from there and invade it.) but fate told that it was not to be...
It was midnight, and he was approaching the outer coast of the North sea. Although he was swift and fast, one of the British patrols noticed a strange shadow, but this was indeed the shadow of the ship of Joseph Ashburn, Betsy (he named it after his wife). Now, he was nervous. Soon, eyes were turning towards the sea, watching for any sudden movements which could hint at a secret invasion. As the ship slowly entered under a stone brick bridge, the British patrols were soon aware of him.
"Fire on my command..." the captain patrol whispered softly. He was a general who wore a red coat dazzled with a plethora of awards, and had a dark black hat atop on his silky brown hair. The soldiers were ready to fire, each with a M-16 perched on their shoulder. "FIRE!" the captain shouted. And thus began The Battle of the North Sea, a fight between one sailor and a couple of Redcoats, surely Joseph was outnumbered. But he still pressed on and was eager to pass beyond the bridge and beyond the North Sea and into the imperishable camps and bases of Great Britain. Everything after happened in a flash. Guns fired and bullets were dropped on the ground; they targeted the ship, Betsy, which was now closing in to shore. In a blink of an eye, Joseph sprang from his ship, and unknown to the British, swam away. Staying underwater, one of the troops noticed that Ashburn was nowhere to be found on board, so he decided to shoot at the water. Dodging the bullets was no easy task, however, Joseph was able to escape...barely.
Slowly he got to shore and breathed a sigh of relief. He heard the captain of the Redcoats flabbergasted of his escape yet being outraged at his co-workers. The captain cursed them and left to report to King George III. Joseph was tired, but thinking of his wife and children, he pressed on; realizing that sacrifice was important for his country, for the colonies!
He was brave enough to march upon the doors of the King! Taking a sword from a dead soldier, he fought the King's forces and took their lives. He went upon the throne and warned him, "If you do not stop thy sorrows that your bewilderment has caused, then we Americans, of the great 13 colonies, will take every last one of your servants and soldiers' lives!".
Outraged, King George the Third ordered all his soldiers to come forth and kill Joseph. But Joseph managed to kill them and used his sword to slice a scar upon the King's cheek. This scar stayed there forever. But the King took the life of Joseph. There, Joseph Ashburn, died, protecting his country.
That was when Grandma finished the story. Now that the children were asleep, Grandma fell asleep upon the couch in the living room. An hour later, Betsy got home, and with her came someone unexpected, George Washington...
Note: The events told in this tale are fiction but are based of on real people. The Battle of the North Sea was not a real battle but Joseph Ashburn and Betsy Ross were both real. I also changed the timeline a little bit: Betsy Ross sew the first American Flag BEFORE Joseph left and died. And also he never put a scar upon King George III (I wish!).

Here's my next submission, called "Name That Soldier".

There once was a soldier named Lenny
Who had him a brother named Benny;
But when one of them died,
The other one cried
For the brother whose name rhymed with “Kenny”!

You still have atitle over an hour to make your submission.
Have to say I'm surprised at the lack of activity this has gotten.

After careful consideration, and a disappointing lack of entries, I hereby declare the submission periods over, and have made my decision on the final standings of each entry.

The Grand Prize winner is
The Battle of the North Sea. The fluidity of the story, the grammar, and telling the story without too much filler was excellently done.
Sauron422416: message me for your prize, plus your 500 Viz for participating.
The First Place winner is From Bombs to Beauty. Due to the lack of entries, this entry, by default, gets first place. The rhyming scheme is not well done, and lack of knowledge in realism portrayed in the poem is poorly done. A nice gesture, none the less.
supernerd117: Please message me for your prize, plus your 500 Viz for participating.
The Second Place winner is Name That Soldier. Again, due to the lack of entries, this one by default seems to fall into second place. I feel that this was done just to gain the prizes, and it was poorly done. But alas, something has to claim the prize.
supernerd117: Please message me for your second prize of the night. You will already receive 500 Viz for participating, so you will not get it again for submitting multiple entries.

Local Mods : This competition is over. Please close this thread.
