I dont really know what an ear infection is so I really don't know what it could be but I recently started getting a lot of problems with over the head headphones. If I wear them for like more than an hour, sometimes my right ear will get in a lot of pain. I dont mean that the inside of my ear will hurt or anything, I mean my actual earlobe will swell up and burn a lot for about a minute, and its just really my right ear and with over the head headphones and only recently.

Is this something that can become bad or should I just wear them less or something?

What kind of over the head headphones are they? DO they cover your whole ear, just he flat pads from the 90's, or are they buds?

zanderlex : If you are just now having something on, then it's probably not the headphones. I've had this happen to me before.

Take the headphones off, and clean the soft part that goes around your ears real good with soap and water. Let them air dry.

Now... in order to be able to help you further... answer this:
1. Do you have ear piercings? If so, when were they pierced?
2. Is it inside of your ear, or like gunk stuck in your lobe, like a zit that doesn't want to pop?

That sounds pretty painful. I can't say I've had this problem before, but I would definitely clean your headphones and perhaps be cautious if you have ear piercings or perhaps excess oil that gets trapped near your ears. It makes sense that your earlobe hurts as a result because these headphones cover your entire ear with no ventilation, which allows for build up underneath. I would clean them and see if that makes a difference. If not, I would consider switching headphones.

thing1 : I dont have anything and I already said that its not inside the ear. Soap might help.

Razor-987 : How would I even clean the headphones? Wouldn't the muff parts get damaged?

zanderlex : wow! that seems really painful! i know this isn't much help, but i'm not sure you have an ear infection, because it hurts way worse. and i'd know, cause all of my 11 sublings (including me) have had ear infections. weird, huh?

I actually had an ear infection last year. Mine occurred a few days after I had vertigo. It was extremely painful and I couldn't hear out of my left ear for a couple of weeks... I've never heard of an ear infection being caused by earphones though. Have you went to a doctor and got antibiotics for the ear infection? That's what I did and the ear infection went away completely in about a couple of weeks.

gamerforlifeforever2 : No, I never bothered going to a doctor, whenever I'm listening to music I'm usually going somewhere so whenever I'm free I just forget about it until the next time that I'm going somewhere again.

Your actual skin may be having an allergic reaction. This has happened to me too. If you wear them for a certain amount of time especially if it's a certain type of headphones then I would suggest not using them as long and using them less often. I used to use earbuds and they caused me a lot of problems and I bought a new headset for less than 30 dollars I believe on amazon earlier this year and they haven't gave me any problems .. other than headaches after listening to music to long.

So basically you have 2 options to try. Buy a new headset or earphones and /or listen to it a bit less often and it should not irrate your skin as much. Hope this helps.

Ever consider that it might be due to the fact that your playing music through them too loudly and it's hurting your ears.... Also you may be wearing them way to tight which can cause to people being in discomfort from headaches and earaches etc.

sonicmcmuffin : I can understand the part about wearing the headphones too tight, but the problems haven't started until about two months after I started wearing the headphones, and I ONLY wear headphones of the same style, so I've been wearing headphones that are almost the exact sane for almost 5 years.

As for the loudness, I dont see how that can be a issue because the pain and stuff isn't inside my ear, its on the actual skin itself.

Ear infections are not caused by minor external exposure such as earphones. They are most often a result in bacterial (sometimes viral) buildup/infection caused from things like having a cold, allergy, excess mucous, buildup of excess ear wax, etc. Sometimes, if water manages to settle inside the Eustachian tube (auditory canal, which is where pops happen when you yawn or open your mouth wide) and acts like a culture broth for bacterial buildup. If, by a very small chance, headphones were causing it, it would be because you are having some sort of allergic reaction that is causing inflammation. Otherwise, there is something else going on.

Unless you share the headphones with someone, or if they've become really dirty lately, it's unlikely to be an infection. You should check with a doctor if you can, but you should be OK.

I've never been fond of "Princess Leia" headphones myself, even if they don't cover the whole ear. The sound isn't as clear and my ears do get tired of being compressed. Earbuds are usually better... when they still have rubber to make the insertion more comfortable. Plus it's more discrete.

zanderlex : Just because you've been wearing the same type of headphones doesn't eliminate the problem... you could be wearing them tighter without knowing.. i know that i when i first got my headphones i used to wear them pretty lose.. but eventually i started wearing them tighter and tighter...  also your skin could be getting irritated because your not letting the skin breathe enough...

also if it really is causing you that much distress then see a doctor
