You notice how when people make movies about something you love, they screw it up? Like the Mario Bros. movies, the Doom movie, the Alone in the Dark movie (shudders). In fact, the only films I recall being successful based on a movie/game/book is Lord of the Rings (I would say Harry Potter, but i'm not into that series. Nothing personal, I'm just not into it) It makes you wonder: would fans of a certain series do better at making a movie on a specific franchise than a director?

Harry potter movies are a total mess. Im just sooo disappointed about the movies and I'll probably just stick with the Harry potter books like I used to be.

I agree with you about the Lord of the Rings. That one is just awesome.

As for the question, I think it'll be better if the director is also a fan of that thing for the movie to be great. That way, the director will not just be working for money and reputation, but also because he really want the project to be great.

If you really think Lord of the Rings is the only good movie based off a book, then I'd really have to smack you

Movies like Gone with the Wind, 2001: Space Odyssey, No Country for Old Men, and much more were based off books. Hell, nearly half of the most memorable movies out there were based off books.

(to xfighter1138) Sorry dude, didn't mean to offend you. I was just stating the only successful series based off of books that I knew of. I haven't checked out those movies before, but maybe I will.

well, a lot of the movies you've referenced aren't things that exactly translate easily into a movie. With CG the way it is now just about anything transfers over to movies a lot easier.

There are plenty of movies, like some that xfighter has mentioned, that have been quite good.

Although I have yet to find a movie that is as good as a book. It just doesn't happen for me. But I do find that after watching the movie that I can visualize the book more clearly which is something I really like

Batman and Robin was a friggin mess. Even though the modern Batman movies were good, like "The Dark Knight", i'll always remember this as the absolute worst.

The movie "Steel" was hideous too.

I agree. The first 2 were good. Batman and Batman returns were both good. Keaton was an interesting Batman. Once Batman became Val Kilmer the series went downhill. They tried to keep Batman Forever good by using lots of star power but it didn't really work too well. Same with Batman and Robin actually.

I'm really glad the Batman series was redone and made SO much better. The 2 new ones feel more like the original. A lot darker than the cartoony ones that were made later.

I think all the Scary Movie movies SUCKED ASS.
They call that comedy?
They are obviously easily amused....

Not one scene in that pathetically written/directed movie made me REMOTELY crack a chuckle. SO BORING!

I was bummed out with "The Incredible Hulk." It had a lot of action, but it wasn't a Spider-Man 2. Spidey had it all: Humor, morality, action, etc.

YourMajestyKen : Again, bump of a dead thread. I guess it could still be relevant, but still...

Harry Potter movies are hard to follow and are boring. Trying to convert a huge novel into a 2 hour movie was a bad idea in the first place.

The Eragon book (from Inheritance series) was a top-rated book that I think was almost as good as Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately the person who directed it had never directed a movie before. Prior to the movie, he was usually in charge of special effects. The movie was overloaded with so many special effects that it killed the story. I can tell the end of the movie without spoiling. Eragon was supposed to fight the bad guy in an epic sword fight. Instead he rode his dragon and did virtually no fighting in their battle. The bad guy also used magic to create a dragon-like thing to fly on. They actually put in so much special effects that it killed that experience as well.

They contradicted the story more times than I can count, overdid the special effects, and removed a ton of key events leaving behind one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I have no doubt that if anyone with a decent reputation had directed the movie, then it would have done very well and it would have sequels (2 to be precise, with a third on the way).

Harry Potter was average in the first two movies, but they really improved starting with the third. I know the major change was based on Dumbledore's actor's death . Still, even though they contradict the story more than before, the movies themselves are still done well and are worth watching. I just wish it didn't take the death of the perfect Dumbledore for it to happen.

I think the worst movie I've ever seen was 'The Neverending Story 3'. That has got to be the worst sequel I've ever seen. Atreyu was non-existent, they turned Falkor into a womanizing moron, they turned the Rock Biter into a mix between Fred Flintstone and Steppenwolf, they turned Bastion into a complete pansy, and they turned the Childlike Empress into Meghan Fox (unattractive and untalented).

'The Neverending Story' is on my top 20 list of the best movies ever, but the third movie of the series was so terrible I was almost crying when it was over. So if you liked 'The Neverending Story' don't even attempt to watch the third one.

Being a horror movie fanatic..I was more than disappointed when I saw the movie "The Last Exorcism". Based on the trailer...they made it seem like it's the scariest movie of all time considering it's based on a true story. I waited months....finally when I saw it, I fell asleep not even midway through. It's so boring...so much talking and not enough action. All the action I assume was near the end, which I didn't get to see! I hate when trailers over exaggerate and try to make a movie seem better than it actually is. A complete waste of money....
