Hey, paisanos! It's The Super Mario Brothers Super Show!...Wait it's not? Oh, wrong script! We're reviewing Mario 3D Land, that's right.

We all know the Gameboy classic, Super Mario Land. Super Mario 3D Land is...Not a sequel to that game at all. This game combines 3D levels with 2D platformer mechanics. Kind of like Mario 3D World, but...not. The two games are different in as many ways as they are similar. But how is this game by itself? Would I recommend it? Is it really that fair to compare a portable game to a console one? Well, this looks like the start. Level 1-1...Let's a go! YAHOO!!!!!

*Gets hit by a Goomba*

Graphics: 8/10
These are some pretty polished graphics for the 3DS. I'm actually impressed by them. The levels look great, and the enemies look great. They don't look realistic, but that's not the kind of graphic style Mario goes for. This is, however, the best they all looked until 3D World came around. The levels look like someone took one of the classic games, and mashed it into Super Mario Galaxy. So you get some wood planks, buzzsaws, and pipes mixed in with beep blocks, electrodes, and all kinds of other crazyness. They exceeded my expectations, and that says a lot. The enemies look like you'd expect. Just a high quality version of the same old guys you've loved to stomp. All in all, the graphics are fantastic, one of the better ones on the 3DS; but not THE best you'll find on the 3DS.

Sounds: 9/10
The sounds are awesome! Good enough to where a lot of the sound effects went onto the WiiU remake, and probably beyond. You can tell for this game they didn't just copy and paste old sound effects. They got together and recorded some new ones! I always like those little steps of extra effort. The enemies however, some of them have new, original sounds. But some also are just pasted in from Galaxy. The music...That's the funny thing about this rating. The music didn't contribute much to this score. All except the remixes of Super Mario Bros 3 songs, I barely remembered the newer ones. The main thing is, most other songs are remixes of the main theme, which itself is used for level 1. The music is okay, and good for the levels. But not the most memorable in the long run. The sound effects are fantastic though.

Addictiveness: 10/10
Oh man, is this an addictive game! I've played through this about 6 times already. It's fun!! Especially in your first playthrough you'll find this game incredibly addictive. I think it comes from the semi-challenging levels, the fact it's portable, and the fact you can switch bros once you've played through the first time. More on that later.
You wouldn't think the fact the game is portable would contribute so much to why it's addicting. But when you're on a car ride, or just bored at home. You can pull out the 3DS, and play this sucker until you run out of lives. Or until a level frustrates you to the point of quitting...The unique structure of the game is a fun experience too. Sure now there is another game that plays just like this. But a 3D game that behaves like 2D Platformers really is a unique concept. I'm actually shocked Nintendo never tried this approach before. It appeals to both hardcore gamers and casuals alike.

Story: 3/10
It's Mario, what were you expecting? Oh, something like Bowser trying to recreate the galaxy?  Peach's voice being stolen? A secret society of shady villains trying to steal artifacts to resurrect a demon sealed under Nintendo's version of Detroit? Nah, what are you talking about man?
It's just Bowser taking Peach because they probably have a system now. Peach is probably like "Oh, it's Tuesday. Bowser will be here any second no-HELLLLPPPPP!!!!" And that is the beginning. I think I can speak for everyone if I said Nintendo would be the best ever if they put the same level of story as they do in RPG spinoffs, and even Galaxy 1 as they do to normal games.

Depth: 5/10

The depth to this game is a bizarre case. There aren't any secret exits to levels. A few levels DO have easter eggs however. Like, if you ever find a level with what looks like coin operated binoculars. Look up and gaze at the sky for a little bit, if you look in the right spot you'll find a UFO! I won't even get started on the end of the ghost house one... And level 5-2 has a few references to Legend of Zelda. If you solve a certain puzzle, you'll even here the puzzle-solved jingle lifted straight from Ocarina of Time.
Anyway, once you get to World 8, beat Bowser, and rescue the Princess. It looks like curtains right? Well, there is a bonus world. Actually, the game happens to double in size. There are 8 secret worlds, but almost all of the levels are just harder versions of their main level counterparts. But there are a few cool things here too. Like a Tanooki Leaf that lets you turn into a statue (making you temporarily invincible), and playing as Luigi!! There is also a secret level within the secret world, but only if quite a few conditions are met...
I rate this depth 5/10 because there are little bits of real depth, (The secret secret world, hidden powerup, and Luigi mode) and then just artificial depth with most secret world levels just being copied and pasted, but with minor changes.

Difficulty: 6/10
The difficulty here isn't the worst. It's certainly easier than 3D World and Galaxy. The platforming itself isn't TOO bad. In fact, only five or so levels actually gave me any trouble. I guess playing the game for the first time is a bit challenging. But like I said before, I've gone through all of it 6 times now.
Expect a gradual difficulty spike. What is a common problem with me is, I'll either beat the level with no damage, or I'll end up dying 20 times. No telling why though, sometimes the game throws you a curveball. There is a certain level who's difficulty surpasses Galaxy in terms of difficulty, and is right up there with Champion's Road in 3D World however...

Super Mario 3D Land is a great game. It's definitely worth a try if you haven't played it before. What 3D World is for the Wii U, 3D Land is for the 3DS. A genuinely fun video game anyone can enjoy. It can be a bit simplistic at times, but not for very long. This game will always leave you telling yourself "Just one more level, then I'll be done." But it'll never be over...You must play...FOREVER!!!!!! Because it's that much fun.
I definitely recommend this game to anyone.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

*Gets hit by a Goomba*...I know the feeling. Back in the day, I often would stop playing the original Super Mario Bros...because of that first Goomba. I just wasn't very good at certain video games.

I highly agree with the difficulty. I didn't have much trouble with the game outside of the final final level. On certain levels, I'd lose a ton of lives. But I grew, and got better. Now I can replay those levels with few problems. The raccoon tail in particular made the game much easier, and much of the game revolves around it. I found that to be the game's biggest strength and its biggest weakness.

Overall, I love your review! I liked the references you popped in there.

Great review as usual, dude! Good detail, some humor, and very insightful. And with how you described the depth and difficulty was especially good. The game was a cakewalk up until world 8, with almost no challenge whatsoever, and even then, was pretty easy the rest of the way until like you said, a few levels later on that could be hard.

Yeah, another good review! This is the first 3DS game I've played and so now and then I still play it, so it sure is addictive. The game is pretty easy early on but the extra worlds have some hard levels and getting all the star coins can be very frustating. Also, that last level was so hard

I see that you mentioned one thing wrong though, there are some levels that have secret exits! Not that they do anything cool, they just transport you to another world that you normally can not go to yet until you've finished all the levels in the worlds before it. I found this on Youtube so I'll give you the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qYoTF3Nwcw (at about 6:00 and 19:15 they can be seen).
