You can read the actual news article here.

I'm not a big time gamer like most people here, and in fact, I really don't have the time to game.  Work usually keeps me swept away, and there's simply not enough time to do all the other things I want to do!

However, I thought this piece would interest some people.

Did anyone here know anything about the "Brown Box"?
Can you believe video gaming consoles have (only?) been around for 42 years?  My parents are older than that, but not by much.  I can't believe video game consoles were such a new thing when -I- was born!  And that there have been SO many impressive advances in such a short amount of time!

It's also pretty cool that he invented the Simon toys.  My twin had one of those, but I probably played it more often than any of my siblings.  Talk about simple pleasures, huh?

And didn't they start remaking those Simon toys this year?  If my sources are right about that, talk about coincidences!

I read about his death. Now I really, REALLY am confused. I am confused why no one is crying. I mean steve jobs died and millions around the world held vigils but all he did was take money while offering you crap products at a premium price (actually some of the new macs are pretty awesome, if you have 3k to spare). What about the dude who created C#? Or the dude who invented the microwave? Man college dudes would starve without the microwave! Mr Baer didn't just invent a console, his ideas sparked a movement. And this is why we learn history, to celebrate and understand the importance of certain greatness, good or bad. Baer passed away without enough attention. I say he deserves a posthumus nobel prize for his pioneering art in household entertainment technologies. Without this man there'd probably still would be the same video games we play today but without this man that type of technology would have probably came later due to it being a later idea. His ideas came a long way and I think he deserve more than a thank you from every person who has enjoyed video games in their lives. RIP Ralph H. Baer March 8, 1922 – December 6, 2014. Long live your legacy.

It's quite funny actually. Fourty-two years ago, this man made the console as a means of simple entertainment in our lives, something of a novelty. The Brown Box, or Odyssey, if you will, was certainly not the first video game machine ever invented, but it was the first to bring cartridge based gaming into our homes.

Fast forward, now it is 2014. From the simple idea to put interaction on a TV, we could not today have people boasting about 1080p graphics, console wars between the Xbox One and the PS4, or anything, for that matter. This man created the Odyssey a simple electronics pioneer, and died a genius.

Rest in peace, Ralph Baer, long live the legacy of gaming.

I haven't really heard about the news until just now and this just saddens me. Seeing that the inventor of video games passed away at 92, that is just really sad to my thoughts.

Without Ralph Baer, The PlayStation 1, 2, 3 & 4, The Original Xbox, 360, & One, The Nintendo Wii, Gamecube, 64, SNES, & NES, and all the Sega consoles, plus just to name a few wouldn't of existed, and a lot of video gaming sites like IGN, Gamespot, and yes, even Vizzed wouldn't even exist without Baer. Not just that, but gaming stores wouldn't exist either like GameStop.
So, personally, Ralph really put a brand new media on the market with movies and TV shows.

Who would of thought his simple creation of pong (where you control two pads and bounce a ball back and forth) evolved to what we have today sure came a long way, and that was the creation of Baer. So we all thank you on your success you pull on a new industry.

You sir, is not just a legend, but The Legend.

That's kind of sad actually, but he got to play a later gaming system and see what his greatness has wrought, with others improving upon the clay that he set, which has now been molded and renewed, more and more creations springing up everywhere.
A great man has now fallen. The earth is in peril.
My reaction-

Oh my God, the day he died, I picked up a book on the culture of video games ad learned about his life and struggles. Found out today he died at the same time which killed me on the inside. I wish so bad that I could meet him.

If you want to read the book, its called: All your base are belong to us: How 50 years of video games conquered pop culture.

It had to happen sometime but at the same time it is sad I would have loved to meet him may his soul rest in peace for eternity.
