I have a five-year-old son who is interested in Pokémon.  Since I'm totally clueless on where to start, I'm looking for some advice.  Which game should we start with?  I assume a good starting point is whatever game is the first one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is true in a way, start off with newer ones and they might find the older ones to be too "bad" so I would start off with either yellow or gold.

I would start off with Pokemon X or Pokemon Y or Pokemon Omega Ruby or Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. It really doesn't matter just depends on what nintendo ds you have or you are willing to buy. I would at least start off Pokemon Black or Pokemon White.

So, I decided to let him choose which one we would play.  He decided on Yellow.  We are having so much fun.  My wife, on the other hand, has to endure the beginning of every fight with both of us shouting in unison, "Go Pikachu!"  She doesn't seem to enjoy it as much as we are right now.  I'm sure she'll come along, or start wearing earplugs.

That's great, hope that he has a lot of fun. So you want to keep this open in case you need more help or is that all you need for now?

If he wants to play any more of the games, here is a quick rundown:

The first Generation, Pokemon Red and Blue, are the beginning of the series, not much to say about them, other than being in black and white on the 1989 Gameboy, which might deter from the experience.

Pokemon Gold and Silver, then next installments, balance a lot of the issues from the first games, as well as being twice as long (probably the longest in the series by overall content)

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire introduced many new concepts, as well as made the games more story based. Their generation also included remasterings of Pokemon Red and Blue (Green in Japan) in the form of Fire Red and Leaf Green.

Generation Four, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, have the largest world to explore, although they are somewhat lacking in depth. This generation included remasterings of Gold and Silver as HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Gen V, Pokemon Black and White, have arguably the most story-driven gameplay, but are somewhat more linear than previous installments.

Finally, Pokemon X and Y remaster the entire series in 3D, including the battles, but the games are shorter than some of the previous. This generation, very recently, released remakes of Ruby and Sapphire as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

I personally believe that Pokemon Black and White are the best games to date, but everything is up to your little ray of sunshine. If you need any help, don't be afraid to ask.

Ah, Pokemon Yellow. That was my first Pokemon game as well, got it for Christmas when I was a young lad.

I say starting off with the classics is a good choice to introduce him to Pokemon. That way, they can discover the steps Nintendo took during their years of progress, and the little guy can come to appreciate where they stand as a whole this day in age when he finally gets to X/Y.

I'd probably suggest starting with either X/Y or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire because those are the newest ones and there have been some big changes in those games from the older games such as the addition of mega evolutions.

Since you have a young kid wanting to start in the Pokemon series, it's really best to start out with either X / Y or Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire because these games are the most recent games released.

Mostly why I pick these games are because he might not get into the 1st gen games because he might think the graphics ain't that good, but when he get's older, he'll try out the earlier ones.
