So, Super Smash Brothers for Wii U came out recently. It's been hyped up to the point where it became the definition of hype itself! The sad thing is, it's over now. To be honest, I kinda liked reading everyone's theories about it. But you may be wondering "How good IS Sakurai's gift to humanity?" Well, I'm here to tell you.
Strap into the hype train one more time, as we take off on a fantastic voyage through this review!
Graphics: 10/10
Oh my goodness...The only thing I've played with graphics this good was Pikmin 3! The graphics are simply beautiful. I don't know how, but all of the characters look like their designs from their series' but in HD. Sadly, yes, this means Mario's hyper realistic overalls are gone. Instead, there are smooth blue overalls. But don't worry, now everyone else has hyper realistic clothing.
Another good example is Link, his clothes look pretty realistic now, and his hair moves too. And then there's Donkey Kong, who just looks incredibly fuzzy! What I'm trying to say is, a lot of people put a LOT of time into each character. And the stages? They're just as beautiful. From the Mushroom Kingdom, to Gaur Plain, and galaxies beyond, everything looks amazing.
Addictiveness: 7/10
The addictiveness on this one falls a bit flatter than you would expect, to be honest. You see, there isn't many options for single player. You've got Classic Mode, Events, and All Star. But that's pretty much it...Well, I guess you could count looking at trophies if you want to get super technical. But yeah, this game was made with multiplayer in mind. If you get someone to play with you however, you'll have no problem playing the game for hours on end.
Music: 10/10
The music...If you didn't know your ears could feast, then you haven't listened to any track from this game. It's all amazing! All the series, no matter how dead or underrated, got quite a few remakes, and remixes. There's no way you'll walk away disappointed by the soundtrack.
Story: 0/10
Nope, no story. None whatsoever...
I really wanted Adventure Mode back too...
Depth: 6/10
There isn't TOO much depth to this game. In fact, out of the few unlockable characters on the 3DS version, there are actually LESS characters to unlock here. There are also only a few stages you can unlock as well. But, there is a TON of content already unlocked. I'm not quite sure how many music tracks there is to find though. Most of the score I put in for depth comes from the sheer amount of trophies there is to win, buy, or find.
Difficulty: 7/10
Ah, difficulty, my old friend. This game is definitely harder than Brawl was, mostly because of the new physics engine. You fall a lot faster, but not quite as fast in Melee. This makes air battles last about 3-5 seconds, as it should be. Not 20 seconds of fall time. The AI has gotten smarter too, they're brutal! And, they're also very different from the 3DS version. Instead of shielding at every opportunity, on higher difficulties they'll just destroy you with little mercy.
Super Smash Brothers is probably the one of most highly anticipated games of the year. What with the teasing about it's existence since E3 2010, total silence for three years, and then finally BAM! A huge trailer, and Sakurai himself taking time to post a new picture of it every day until it's release. But now...It's all Kyogre. At least we can look back on how much fun we had not knowing everything about it. And, the game itself is pretty cool. It might be one of the best reasons to get a Wii U, it has both elements of games Nintendo made for it in the past. It's both fun, and shows off the graphical capabilities pretty well. It's an all around great game.
Overall: 9.5/10
