It seems that many discussions about religion (on Vizzed and elsewhere) do not start by stipulating a definition of religion. As a result, people have a tendency to argue past one another. So how do you define religion?

I define it as the thing ignorant people used to go to when they didn't have the answers to the questions of life.

I think it's useless now, as everything can be defined by science.

Rather than make up our own definition for a term which already has one, I think we should just use the said proper definition.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/religion

That definition makes sense.

It's just a term used to identify a belief system regarding moral ethnicity, the purpose of the Universe and such.

Whether a said religion, (like any other belief) is true or not, requires that you look into and think about it logically. I don't like to identify myself with any religion because of how people will immediately band me with others of the said group. Some people think they already know what I believe before I've even spoken.

But, when people do that, I pretty much just move on and don't even answer them.

They aren't interested in hearing why one believes, they just want to prove wrong.

One should take time to get to know another individual and let them explain before judging them, irregardless of what religion that they are a part of. Everyone has a story, you should hear it.

Of course, I am not saying that what religion you are part of does not say something about you.

Just take it in balance.

It's one of those things that brings people together for various purposes, like food, concerts, schools, and works. Although the world seems unimaginable without it, the thing is that humanity wouldn't disappear without it, but it's not that simple...
I think it is the least understood aspect of the human culture, that's why it's been attracting so much attention throughout the years. Even if you try to compare the textbook definitions of "Religion" and to what's been going on in, say, the Middle East and the world in general, you won't see that many matchings.
Sword legion:
I think even the definition is obsolete at this point. If you want to know the definition of the word itself, than it might suffice.

In most cases, the word goes along with the definition...
This doesn't seem to be the case with "Religion" maybe it never was... Heck, Buddhism isn't even considered to be a religion.

Just to let you know, this comes from a religious person.
If it makes you feel good about yourself then it can't be bad, right?

The interesting thing about religion, is it appears to be something of a club now. Despite ticking all the boxes, many faiths are called cults, because apparently they are too ridiculous to be ture religions.
Yet, nowhere in the definition, does it say religion must be either reasonabe or true, simply believed.

Buddhism is a religion, in that it deals with the universe and natural order of life. If it was just the code of conduct id say it wasnt, but the idea of reincarnation is a celar indicator of a non scientific theory on the cosmic order and purpose of life and the universe.

I remember in primary school people saying they would want to be buddhist, because they can come back after they die. I think that really defined the appeal of religion, where many dont neccessary believe it, but they want it to be true.

Id say anything not rooted in scientific fact, that deals with life, purpose and our origin is religion.

I think religion is a thing to answer the questions science can't answer, like why we're here.

I don't think it's a very useful thing. I myself really don't care why we're here, we just are. because wynaut. I don't want to believe in something that could be fake. I'm not really willing to take that chance.

Actually, I think the thinks that we believe with are not true just to make us feel good about ourselves are the most dangerous things we can believe in. It's like a crutch, of which we become dependent upon. And that just hinders our potential. Treat religion like any other information that you come across before you believe it.

Is it true?

I find many things in the Bible are true.

Now, I know somebody's gonna say.

"No, the Bible isn't true."

Well, that would be that person's opinion then, and I would be expressing mine. And this is not the place to debate it, as this thread is designated toward how one would define religion.

But if you want, I can show you why I believe in Yahova, and even show you the videos and stuffs I used to be a lot more into. If your interested.

You see, religion, I'm not going to waste my time on something that is not the truth, or treat it like it's a game just for fun.

If it's the real deal, that's why I believe it.

Do you?

I have thought about this question myself many a time until something occurred to me. Religions have formed through out the world countless times in every (human) era. Some in areas where different cultures intermingled and thus the religions have had similarities and others where they are radically different with little outside influence. All (that I know of) have reflected the people's environment and culture. And all pertain to how the universe works, history, how one should live, and death or life after death.

But really out of all these things I think the real difference that sets each one apart is their view of death.

I mean, we know certain things about this life. Plants grow, all things age, what comes up must come down, chocolate covered fried Twinkies are amazing, clowns become terrifying after reading the book "It" by Stephen King. You know basic truths we learn through life.

But what question came to nearly all peoples of every nation in every (human) era that scarred them pants-less. One cannot go through life without seeing death. Death comes in many shapes and forms. In comes in fires, floods, earthquakes and plagues. You see it as road kill the street and as rosy cheeks in a funeral parlor. It comes when you least expect it. In most cases its horrible and very rarely beautiful.

I'm pretty sure that to all peoples of all nations the question that comes to mind is quite simply, "Is this my future?"

All that we can see of death is the aftermath, the corpse. So what happens to us?

Are we granted a respite from this life and enter another or are stuck in this rotting corpse, buried or burned.

And depending how you view death determines how you view life.

In most (all I think, I'm not an expert) Christian faiths you live this one life and your afterlife is determined by how you lived when alive. While in Buddhism all the world's suffering is caused by desire, so if you remove desire from your life you end your suffering and eventually reach enlightenment. In many Christian faiths you have one life and strive for a good place as your final destination. In Buddhism you strive for enlightenment and for your next incarnation.

The main difference In death between the two is this. Christians live in A and can go for options B thru C. Buddhists live in A and can go for options A thru The Entire Animal Kingdom.

But both are similar in many ways. Both believe in the immortality of the human soul and both have a holy person who represents all the believers idolize (Jesus and Buddha). Both have a holy text from which the believers try to live their lives and within them truths about the world which they try to pass on.

Now I am not an expert on religion nor a believer of either of these. Neither were explained to me very well so most of this is just observation on my part.

These are just an example. I have heard of many others but I don't have as much information on them. When I asked any adult as a child I either heard a sermon (most of which I tuned out regardless of whether I asked them or not) or was told to,"Google it". You gotta love the information age.

Most religions have some sort of deity(s). These deity(s) usually reflect the state of being of the populace and by the environment. In India its very hot and many people are poor. The labor is hard and it is a struggle to survive in most of the area. But the land is fertile and the plant variety is abundant. It is the land known as the "Home of Spices" with many different spices grown only there. Their main goddess is named Kali and she is a god of destruction and death. She is scantily dressed (by my standards at least) and always carries a severed head. But she is not worshiped out of fear but of love. The people of India have fully accepted death as a part of life and understand that if there is no death than new life cannot be born. With life there is death and with death, life.

In this faith if one has lived a full life and has earned it they shall be reborn as a cow. That is why this entire country does not condone, conduct, or encourage the slaughter and/or eating of cows. I mean it would be terrible if you knew you were eating your late relative. I don't have that much information on this particular religion so if anyone knows a site with more info please post it. It really does seem interesting.

The main point of this is that the deciding factor in all the religions I have heard of is the view of death that reflects how one should live in life.

But there is another term for those who think on life, death, how the universe works, afterlife, and how we should treat others. However it is rarely connected with religion. We call these people 'Philosophers'. They spend their entire lives thinking about the very questions religions try to answer. These types of thinkers have often discovered ground breaking theories that have only in the last hundred or so years been proven.

The seeds left by ancient philosophers have sprung forth the foundations for modern day science. Native American Indians, Ancient Greeks and Romans all had the concept of atoms hundreds of years before the microscope was invented.

This brings in current sciences. As far as I know the phrase "Question Everything" is the task most scientists use in their work upon discovering something new. And they are trying to find the very same answers that both religion and philosophers seek. This however does not mean that all religious people are both philosophers and scientists, that all scientists are philosophers and religious, or that all philosophers are religious and scientific.

It merely means that some scientists are religious, some philosophers are scientific, and some who are religious think beyond what their religion dictates.

This, in my opinion, means that even though there is much ugly history between these three factions at the end of the day we all seek the same thing. The truth, whether that be where the soul goes after we die, the moral reasons to help one another, or the proper ratio of excersizes I should use to burn off all that pizza I just ate.

I define religion as philosophy, philosophy as the way I should live life and how to treat others and science as the rational way to find the answers we all are looking for.

P.S. I use a program call WordWeb for all my dictionary needs and these are the definitions it gave me.

religion-
1. A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny
2. An institution to express belief in a divine power

philosophy-
1. A belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative by some group or school
2. The rational investigation of questions about existence and knowledge and ethics
3. Any personal belief about how to live or how to deal with a situation

science-
1. Study of the physical and natural world using theoretical models and data from experiments or observation
2. A particular branch of scientific knowledge
3. Ability to produce solutions in some problem domain
4. Research into questions posed by scientific theories and hypotheses

And here I thought the purpose of religion was suppose to explain how the world works. I guess if you want answers you'll have to look into philosophy and science for that.

Religion came to this world many many many many years ago. IMO, there were some people too scared of what was happening before religion came along. Religion was invented to help people gain and maintain morals. It's all a ploy to get people to conform to the "ways" of the bible or whatever book your church is into.

Someone (or a group of people) decided one day that they were sick of all the reckless human activity and senseless barbaric ways. Some folks got together to write a big book and called it a holy book. They came up with a way to frighten the rest of the people around them into believing that The Bible spoke only the truth. Think back to the days before copying machines. There were few monks who knew how to write and read. Those monks who were literate probably all got together to make more copies of The Bible for everyone else to read.

Do you really believe that if this is what happened (monks copying) that every monk copied the original book word for word? Heck no, I imagine there was one person reading the book to all the other monks. While no one was checking to make sure the originality of the first book was copied correctly into the other books, some people made up there own stories or changes certain words or phrases in The Bible. The integrity of the original Bible has been tainted. Does that make sense to anyone but me? I'm not trying to say that anyone is wrong. If anyone is wrong about religion it would probably be me. However, I have watched television whenever Stephen Hawking was on and he seemed to make more sense of things (like how the world was formed). He does not believe that there was any type of God who created Heaven, Earth, or Hell. It just makes sense to me that once there was nothing in our universe until this extraordinarily huge amount of energy, smaller than the tip of a needle, became too great to contain itself any longer. Once that energy became too great, it exploded into the universe which we call home. The universe which allows us to play awesome old school games on this website.

Eventually, the universe spread in all different directions from that explosion. Rocks and metal were formed from all the energy and eventually the rocks (meteors, which some were and still are made from materials other than rock) clashed to form friction...which in turn these meteors stuck together. As more rocks clashed into each other, more friction was created. After millions of rocks clashed together they begin to attract each other and tend to not more apart as quickly after clashing. Eventually these rocks began to take hold of each other and hold that friction. These rocks had to have been VERY large, travel at very fast speeds and have much momentum to create the type object that would then begin to hold this friction and melt the rock and create different gases from the different types of rocks which now float together....permanently. As more meteors collide, more planets and more stars were created. Once a star was formed and began to shine from all the heat caused by the friction it created a magnetic field. Remember, this theory states that there were many different types of meteors which would probably cause the star to have a magnetic pull (which causes more rocks to collide into the star...which causes the stars to have the ability to grow to immense sizes.

Now that a star has formed, there could then have been more of an influence around the star for similar things to happen which would create planets and moons. The stars became so large that meteors began to orbit them. Once they began orbit it was just a waiting game until there was a planet which would be sufficient enough for life. Where did water come from? Remember that water is just 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. These were made available to some of the planets which formed. Those planets which had the correct types of metal and rock from space collide and become one could produce H20. Water is the building block of life on this planet. From that point, when water came onto the scene, the waiting game I mentioned earlier in this paragraph would be almost over. Life would soon emerge. Where did life come from you ask?

My theory is mixed from others I've heard and studied. As things were flying around in space they smash into other planets. The impact can be tremendous. Enough to send particles from the surface of that planet into dead space and it would just travel through the vacuum of space until it ended up passing through the atmosphere of another planet. Once in the atmosphere it could come in contact with the surface of the alien planet. Now, you see, one planet would have contained the element which life would come from (such as water) and the particles from the other planet would have contained the life, in stasis, which needed water to come out of stasis and put life into motion.

Again, remember this is only some theories that I've put together. I have researched this topic quite a bit, though. I am trying to piece it all together and this is what I have come up with. Please feel free to comment and add any type of information that you believe could be added onto this.

So, how do I define religion? My definition of religion is as follows: some people one day thought it to be a good idea to decide what morals people should have since there was none which were set to the norm yet. They decided that being a good person was more important than being a person who would do anything they wanted to do at the time that they felt like doing it. Like murder or theft. They took the 10 most popular "bad" things (which they were the only ones to define others actions as unacceptable) and put it in a book telling others that some higher power is watching. People love rewards.....Heaven is the ultimate reward in this case.

Another theory that I'm currently thinking about is that maybe it was not a group of people who created The Big Book. Believe me or not, there were insane people back then. Think about this. Nobody knew of disease or anything like that. So I ask you this. How would they possibly know about people with mental illnesses? The answer is...they would not know about that. So why would it be that some person didn't go off on his or her own and write this elaborate story to take to others to make them believe that some higher power was "up above" and "watching them"? Even during the times of the Vikings, they would scream at an eclipse because they actually believed the sun was going to be gone for ever if they didn't threaten the God who was covering up the sun. So, many hundreds of years earlier how could they know the truth about any God? How could they live and feel like they have purpose? Religion. That's how.

There were few monks who knew how to write and read. maguc : Religious people aren't  ignorant. Maybe it's the ones that don't care or don't want to listen that are ignorant? :T.

Religion is a thing that gives people hope and a reason to live and explains why we are here and what happens when we die. I, for one, am Christian. I believe that the Bible tells the truth. 2,000 out of 2,500 prophecies in the bible have already come true. Of course, there are many things against religion that scientists have found. But there are also many things scientists have found that they can't explain. This is deviating from the question, so I won't talk any more about this. Altogether I think religion is a thing that gives people hope, but many people today are making it seem like religious people are a bunch of stuck-up, ignorant, delusional people .-.

I think religion can be a good thing for most people, Though most of them get hated on due to all the people who use their religion to do horrible things and say such horrid stuff. Though it can actually help people cope with life a lot better it's not exactly a good thing to say every religious person is a bad person, seemingly they're not. I have a few people in my family along with a few friends that are religious, but they're very good people! They don't tend to do anything or say anything to hurt anyone they're very good people!

It's not that great to let a few bad apples ruin the whole bunch, there's always a few good apples everywhere,no matter where you like you'll be lucky enough to find the good bunch.

Myself I like religion to a point, which I love to study up on every religion that I possibly can! Though the one that intrigues me most has to be the ancient Egyptian religion. It's quite interesting.

Other than that I think religion is kinda a good thing and I don't frown or look down upon any religion.

Well I define religion as the taking it on blind faith that whatever is put in front of you by your religion is absolute and unshakeable. Although I disagree with it in principle, it is a common conception one sees for most religions, and that can be for many reasons. It could be to save your invisible soul that may or may not be there, could be because without that blind faith in something larger than them they could not deal with the trials life will throw at them or it could be that they have to believe in something making their life mean something in turn.  For whatever the reason religion is a part of life and hotly contested when it comes to which one is right and has more merit than others. Religion itself is not a good or bad thing but what the believers do with that knowledge in their everyday lives is what makes it one or the other. I myself am not a uber religious person and do not go to church. I think that when I die ... if I am to meet an all-mighty creator and he is judging me on good and bad ... then I will stand on my own worth and be judged by the life I lived. For better or worse I will live my life as I see fit. Hopefully till the end with truth and honor.

A cult that has been adopted by enough people. That's why Islam is a religion and Westboro Baptist Church isn't.

Seriously, religion is just a set of beliefs in the supernatural. Otherwise, it would be real and science could explain it.

Religion is a system . It's a set of beliefs, practices, cultural traits, etc., that people have the right to have differently from others or simply not have at all WITHOUT being called an idiot.

lowenr :

I define religion as "A social group defined by unique spiritual rituals". So if you do anything that has any sort of spiritual connotation, you're religious. If you do yoga as a stretching work out, it's not religious. If you do it because "it makes oneness with body and soul", you're religious.

If you're Christian and say "I'm not religious, I'm spiritual", you're likely religious under my definition. If you read a bible, pray, worship God, evangelize, listen to evangelizers, etc., you're religious.
