Sorry if this has been posted before, but I would like to know from all you video making enthusiasts out there, what kind of software do you use to make and edit your home vids / youtube clips etc. and why?  Which video editing software is the best in your opinion.  I'm currently looking to get Cyberlink Powerdirector 12 Deluxe since I see it got quite good ratings.  What do you guys think and what would you recommend?

I used to use Sony Vegas but then switched over to Adobe Premiere but for no particular reason. I just got used to it after a while and it still meets my needs.

Along with that I also use Adobe After Effects. However I still have Vegas Movie Studio on my computer if I ever feel like switching from Adobe Premiere.

I would give you an opinion on Cyberlink if I could but I've never really tried it so i can't give you any advice form personal experience. I just tend to stick with the programs I have if they get the job done efficiently.

Blubcreator :  I do have Sony Vegas, but I never really got into it since it looked quite complicated and not very user friendly - very powerful but not user friendly or maybe I'm just stupid.  I also have Adobe Premier of which I also installed the contents CD, but I do not know how to find / actually use the installed contents.  I probably should Google some tutorials...

Some people distinguish the difference between Video Editing Software vs Video Production Software.

Video Editing software just focuses on putting clips and audio in a sequential order with some transitions and effects if you need any. There are some additional features depending on the software, like green screen, basic effects, etc. They get what you need if you simply want to make a video by putting clips together with small amounts of work added onto them. They are easy to use and very cheap. Some of these software includes Cyberlink Powerdirector, Sony Movie Studio, Pinnacle, and Adobe Premiere Elements.

Video Production software are high end software that does more than simply putting clips together. There is more of a professional feel to it with more features that you can do with them, like rotoscoping, audio adjustments, customizable effects that can be stacked on top of each other, etc, etc. These softwares tend to be more professional, more expensive, and harder to use, but are more useful in doing production stuff like movies, TV shows, and professional youtubers. These software includes Apple Final Cut, Sony Vegas Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Avid.

Since I want to make my videos to be very professional and I want to dabble with them by integrating them with composite software like After Effects or HitFilms for special effects, I use Sony Vegas Pro as my software of choice (and I was able to get this software cheaper than its original price tag). According to the TopTenReviews site, Cyberlink Powerdirector is considered the best in the Editing software category.

Are you looking at paid apps/ programs or free? I don't have a suggestion, but I will need some software to edit the YouTube videos I am making...  Also aremember you looking for more professional, or just the standard editing program?

I don't have a whole lot of experience with video editing, but I use Roxio VideoWave, only because it came with my capture device. It has some random crashes, is fairly glitchy, and doesn't have all that many features, but it's easy to use and I don't feel like learning to use another program.

play4fun :  I should've come to you in the first place for advice I forgot that it is one of your hobbies (?)  I only need video editing software for my purposes.  Like I said I do have Sony Vegas something something.  I don't think it's the pro version though.  It looks awesome, but I just don't have the time at the moment to go through all the tutorials, so I need something that's easy to pick up.  Cyberlink seems to be just that and I see on the toptenreview site that it's ironically one of the cheaper ones.  I used to use Corel Videostudio most of the time, but it has its limitations.  I see Sony Vegas pro comes with a hefty price tag of $599 and and Apple Final cut for a mere $1299.  I think I'll stick with the humble video editing side of things

darthyoda:  Definitely paid programs since the free ones don't offer all the tools I need.  I suppose I need something that can offer me a bit of both - professional "look", but that's easy to use.

Thanks everyone for the info and input.
