Luigi's Mansion – Dark Moon Review made by TornadoMudkip. I hope you all enjoy reading my Review! ~

Graphics ~ 9/10

A Weegie game in 3D Graphics? Splendid!

Nintendo made good use of 3D graphics in this game. It really looks wonderful. Water flows, the wind is blowing in 3D style. It looks like the real thing.

You play as Luigi, who looks nice in this 3DS game. Like all other games, he is wearing his same old clothes, still has his mustache etc. You’ll notice quickly – hey, this is Luigi. It is good that you can notice characters quickly. Wouldn’t be fun if Luigi had right now and only in this game a different look.

The ghosts have different looks and different looking bodies. A ghost can be a small green ghost, which does normal damage or a red bulky ghost with huge power. I really like variation for the ghost, like this the ghosts aren’t monotonous and they stay interesting. But on the other side, the Boo’s have the same look as always. I think it would be funny to see a Boo with a hat or something like that.

Bosses are always different – there is a boss who looks like an animal but a boss can be the stairs as well! Really unique, I never played a game before who had stairs as a boss. It’s hilarious! But there are ‘’’’ bosses: King Boo is a boss who creeps me out with his look in this game. Where is the cute King Boo?

Every mansion is different – there is a mansion in a dessert area and a mansion in a icy area. Here again, much variation, which I like a lot. Objects in and outside the mansions are creepy, dark and looking real which I expect from this 3DS game. The objects fit a lot as well – most are creepy looking, that’s what you are supposed to see in a mansion I would say.

Sound ~ 8/10

Great sounds in the game, they’re still in my head. But not really creative…

Why not creative? That’s simple, Nintendo re-used the sounds of the first mansion in the other mansions. Of course, it’s not the same – they changed the sound effects a bit to sound a bit more the same as the location. That’s not bad at all, it only lacks creativity.

The sound effects are used right. If Luigi falls, then you hear it. If the professor calls you, you’ll hear it. If the sound effects aren’t used right, the game would be a mess. That’s why I find this important.

Funny sounds are for example: If the professor talks (which language is he speaking?), or if Luigi is scared. Luigi reacts funny and also makes a funny movement. I find it really good that this game has some funny sounds, that makes the game fun! (And you are able to laugh as well).

But the most annoying sound comes from Toad. Nah not normally, but if Luigi and Toad are in danger, he’ll cry and does stupid things + making weird sounds like: Ouch! Really annoying in a certain level when you need to focus.

But overall, the music is nice to hear, it keeps me playing and makes the game more fun!

Addictiveness ~ 7/10

The game is really addictive. But the difficulty makes it hard to move on..

Because of the difficulty, you might think sometimes: Why can’t I beat this level? It’s useless this game is too hard for me. But you shouldn’t give up that quickly! You always can try again, the game doesn’t run away. It’s understandable that it is hard to try again. The length of the level is also a thing that makes this worse. If you are almost at the end of the level and you faint, there is a chance that you feel frustrated.

The game is addictive in the main story because of the many things you can collect and do. After you complete the game, there won’t be much to do. But I highly recommend to restart the game once. Resetting all the upgrades of the Poltergust 5000 and start over again is fun. I’m pretty sure that you don’t remember every level anymore – that means you have to find out, yay!

Not to forget, the graphics and the sounds of this game makes you to play this game more and more. It’s wonderful, I can’t stop playing anymore!

Story ~ 9/10

What!? Weegie is the main character? Woohoo awesome! If you ask me, Luigi deserves this, Mario is always in the spotlight. Luigi takes the spotlight in this game. FINALLY!

In the night, Luigi relaxing in his house… King Boo breaks the Dark Moon into six pieces! Professor E. Gadd is researching ghosts in the Gloomy Manor. Some green ghosts are helping him, but then, the green ghosts become crazy and destroy a lot of stuff. Thanks to this, professor E. Gadd needs to flight to his bunker in the Evershade Valley. He calls Luigi to find the missing pieces of the Dark Moon. Luigi explores five different mansions to find the pieces and mysterious other secret things… ‘’Nothing can stop him with the Poltergust 5000’’ < It looks like a vacuum clearner equipped with flashlights.

Really interesting story if you ask me. It’s also very unique, I think this kind of a story is never used before in a game. Unique stories are always cool, ‘’you’ll never know what will come on your path.’’ Everything can happen. That makes me really exicted! ~

The length of the game is good enough. If you see how much levels there are you would say: this game is too short. But no no, the levels are pretty long, it takes you around 15 minutes to complete a level.

Depth ~ 7/10

Sooo much things to collect.. What should I do first?

There is much to do in one level – catching ghosts, get a rid of the Boo’s, searching for items like hearts in Treasure Chests, collecting special gemstones like Ruby and Sapphire and of course Coins. Many options here, which I like a lot. A game should have much things to do in the story mode.

Sadly after you have beaten story mode, there won’t be new levels for you to complete. That’s a thing that this games misses. The only extra levels can be unlocked if you catch every Boo in a mansion.

Of course, you also can play with your friends in the ScareScraper, which is another mansion for multiplayer only (called Thrill Tower in Europe and Australia). In this tower, you need to catch all the ghosts on the floor before you can go to the next floor. You can set in which mode you want to complete and how many floors you want to complete. One of the best features of the game: being able to work together with friends. It’s always fun to play alongside your friends.

Difficulty ~ 7/10

Hard, really hard. Why don’t you give me more lifes?

Yes really – if you are hit by a red ghost, you already lose 30 life points. And you have in total 100 life points and you can’t get more of them. So basically, if you are hit four times by a red ghost, you get a game over message.

Lucky for the player, you can get hearts (restores some of your life points) in the levels when you open something or if you catch a ghost. Also, in each level you can find a special Gold Dog Bone. If you have this Bone and you are fainted, the Polterpup comes and licks you back to life. A cute and a very nice scene if you ask me.

Ghosts and Boo’s aren’t that hard to catch. The most ghosts don’t have very much HP. The tougher ghosts are the green ghosts who have an equipment like sunglasses. The powered-up ghosts and the mini-bosses are hard to beat ghosts as well. Sometimes, ghosts working together are hard too. That depends a little on which ghosts are working together. I like the variation between strong and weaker ghosts.

The most annoying and hard boss ever is the Boss of the Old Clockworks. You need to beat much ghosts and other things before you can catch the Boss ghost completely. When I first saw this boss on Youtube, I was thinking: Oh please no. But when I actually tried the level, I complete it in one try!

Games shouldn’t be easy, the difficulty makes it more fun + challenging after all.

Overall ~ 8.5/10

I think this is the best game released in the year of Luigi. This game really makes Luigi shine, something that Nintendo should do much more. (Because Luigi rules and Mario sucks). I really loved to play this game and I actually feel like restarting the game soon again.

The best moment in this game is when Polterpup becomes Luigi’s pet. This makes Luigi’s fear of ghosts less. Thanks to this, Luigi looks more like a fearless hero!

This game is perfect if you like to explore and to solve puzzles. I highly recommend to buy this game!

Good review! I really want to get this game sometime. I looooove Luigi (he's one of my favorite Nintendo characters), and am excited that he got another of his own games to star in. I've heard little but praise for this game, although some people like it less than Luigi's Mansion or believe this game is too linear. I don't hate linearity outright. I just want to play good games. And it sounds like this one is quite a good experience.

And every year should be the year of Luigi.

Excellent Review. I will have to get this game and get a Nintendo 3ds. It sounds like it is an awesome game. I really want to get a hold of this game. I agree I like it how Luigi is getting his own series. I'm like you he truly deserves this.

Good work Mudkip! What I really liked is that I, a person who knows the minimal stuff about this game like the story and what to do but nothing else, could understand everything. I also really liked how you used your own opinion to tell things.

And yes, Luigi is awesome. There are games where he isn't present (which sucks) or where he's exactly the same as Mario (New Super Mario Bros for example) or he will be scared real quick (the Mario & Luigi series, but in Dream Team they gave Luigi a bigger role. But in Superstar Saga, he's hypnotized to be Mario as he's afraid of rumors of monsters so he can rescue... Mario who got bean fever, in Partners in Time there is a door which says that he's way too much of a scaredy cat, and in Bowser's Inside Story Starlow constantly thinks Luigi is a wimp) so I'm glad he got back in the spotlights. And Luigi's Mansion was one of the most popular GameCube games, so it's really cool that they made a remake after 12 years.

Sadly though, I haven't played this game, but I have a 3DS, so maybe it could be something for the future!
