I know this is odd, and he may be little over used, I always use Luigi. Even when I play it on later consoles, and versions. I don't know why I like the little green guy, but he is my favorite.

Once in a while I try using Bowser as well, with high speed and top handling among the heavyweights, acceleration doesn't matter if you use the "Start Race Boost" at the beginning, don't mess up/crash/take hits often and don't stop(which is pointless in a race).

I also like to use Toad in Mario Kart 64. He is really light and its easier to maneuver around the course using him, rather than the heavier guys like Bowser or Wario. I have always had the best times while using Toad. It seems like he goes faster than the other characters, too because he is lightweight.

I use Luigi most of the time since he's my favorite character in the whole Mario franchise. I like how he is a medium driver which means he drives just right (not too reckless or too slow).

I love hearing Toad getting run over by the trucks in Toad's Turnpike and hearing him scream. It is music to my ears for some reason.

I always pick Luigi sense he has a good balance of speed and control, and he works well for almost all the courses. I also use him in about every other Mario Kart game for the same reason. Actually, I seem to find myself using him in games that don't revolve around racing as well.
