The first Mega Man game that introduced us to Mega Man. A review of Mega Man one

Story: 6
Well the plot in this story comes from the manual not from the game. Unlike other and future Mega Man games the first one does not have an intro that introduces the player to the plot. Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are well known robotic scientists both have won rewards. Dr. Light has won more awards. They created 8 robots (9 if you include Proto Man). The names of the Robots are Cut Man, who is a lumber cutting robot, Guts Man, a construction robot, Ice Man, an arctic explorer, Bomb Man, a robot used for demolition, Fire Man, waste disposal robot, and Electric Man, a power control robot.  Rock and Roll were lab assistant robots to Dr. Light. Wanting power Dr. Wily takes the 6 robots to take over the world. Dr. Light modifies Rock into a fighting robot and he takes on the name Mega Man. Mega Man goes out to stop the evil plans of Dr. Wily. Okay if nobody read the manual, lets face it who reads manuals, okay some of us do, the player would be lost since the story is not clear. That is were the story and plot suffers. One has to read the manual to get the point. Mega Man 3 did  not have an intro either. However, unlike 3 the first game should have had an intro. Mega Man 3 did not really need an Intro because if people have played other Mega Man games they already knew what the plot was. Mega Man one though needed an intro segment because it was the first one. At least the story from the manual is nice.

Graphics: 4
I hate to say this but this  had the worst graphics of any Mega Man game I have played. The backgrounds do not have real good color. A lot of the times the graphics and sprints are very glitchy. People who have played this game know what I mean especially in Ice Man's stage. But, the graphics are not to good in this game. Their is also a lot of lag in this game. Ice Man stage has a lot of lag, so does Guts man, and even Electric Man's stage has serious lag. The controls are not very good either.. A lot of times mega Man looks like he is slow and stiff. For example when he jumps from one platform to another or when he fires. Now, I did not suspect killer graphics because this game came out in 1987 the NES was still young, and this was the first game. However, I was hoping the controls would be decent. Thankfully Capcom fixed this in future Mega Man games and they fixed the glitches and lag too.

Sound: 6
Okay two stages, maybe 3,  really saved this from getting a lower rating.  Ice Man's and Electric Man's stage music were very memorable and very good. I could also make an argument for Fire Man's stage. Everything else  not so much. A lot of times it even feels like the sound is lagging to the music. The sound in Mega Man one feels scratchy compared to other Mega Man games. Mega Man 3, 4, 5 and 7 all had very excellent sound. I know this is the first game. But, seriously Capcom should have made better sounds. Another bad sound is those annoying platforms in Gut's Man stage those just make you want to put ear plugs in your ears. The bad thing is the Wily games have sounds that tingle. The enemies firing back sounds more like a tingle. So I wrestled with the rating for this one. Due to three stages having solid sound and music I gave it a 6. Thankfully, Capcom fixed the sound in other Mega Man games.

Addictieness: 5
I find myself not playing this one as much as the other Classic Mega Man games. It is nice to go back and see how Mega Man started. I also think it is nice going back to see how well the graphics have improved since Mega Man one. However, this game is short and not as long as other future Mega Man games. The poor Graphics and mediocre sound takes the replay value down on this one. It should be noted that this is the only Mega Man game that keeps score, so that can be fun. For me it just feels awkward. I guess because other Mega Man games do not keep track of scores like they do in other non mega Man games.

Depth: 4
Okay future Mega Man games had 8 stages and then the fortress stages. Mega Man 4-6 had two fortress stages in them.  Mega Man One suffers in depth. There are no extra power ups in this game. The only power up is the platform weapon. Other Mega Man games had power ups. There are not other items to collect either. Mega Man one only has 6 stages and then the Wily stages. So it is a short game. Thus, the depth of this game is so so.

Difficulty: 9
Now here is were the first Mega Man game shines. It is difficult. A lot of the difficulty comes from the games unpredictable springs and glitches. For example, it looks like the player landed safely on a platform but then they fall through into the pit despite making it. Then there is the unpredictable sprints. Sometimes springs move awkward Ice Man' stage is noted for that. Unlike other Mega Man games were the player could get hit on purpose and turn invisible for a few seconds to clear a tough spot, well you can not do that in this game. If you get hit and land on spikes you lose a life. The enemies in this game just love to knock you into spikes or the pits. The bosses can be tricky. Ice Man and Electric Man and maybe Fire Man are very tough to beat without their weaknesses.  The Wily stages are also hard. So while the game is not so good in other areas. It makes up for it in the difficulty rating. I had a very tough time playing this game.

Overall: 6
Okay here is my take on this game. Is Mega Man One a horrible game, not really. Is Mega Man one a great game, no not really. It is so-so. I do not hate this game. But, the graphics, springs, controls and sounds could have been better. If a player is playing this as their first Mega Man game they probably will not  notice these things. However, a lot of people, including myself, played Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 before playing this one. After playing other Mega Man games players get spoiled to their level. This was an okay start for the franchise. But it was Mega Man 2 that is credited for starting Mega Man great run in gaming. So would I recommend this game. I'm so so on that I think the players have to be their own judge. If you want to see how Mega Man got his start and how well the graphics have improved by all means play this game. If you think this game is fun, which it does have its moments, then play and enjoy. However, if you are new to Mega Man and want a good game to learn the controls. I would recommend playing Mega Man 2 instead if you are new. So to sum, it up, I did not expect this game to be as good as the others since it was the first. But, I thought it would be better, it is not a bad game but not a gem either. Thankfully, Capcom fixed a lot of these problems in future Mega Man games.
