Final Fantasy II Review

Hey guys, today I will be reviewing Final Fantasy II for the NES! This game was released in 1991, and this game was re titled final fantasy II since both the FF II and FF III had not been released outside of Japan at the time (There are so many now I can't even keep track anymore) Nevertheless, this game is my absolute favorite out of the series, I am not even going to lie, this game is pretty awesome and I have wanted to review it now for quite a while now, but I have procrastinated in doing so. Now then, onto the review!

Graphics: 9

I think an 8.5 would've seemed more fitting, but I found them to be slightly better than an 8, so I ended up scoring it to a 9. I think the graphics of this game aren't half bad to be honest, they are 16 bit and they come out pretty good in my opinion. Sure, they aren't the best graphics out there, but I think the animations and the battle scenes are pretty good considering they are 16 bit. I will admit, they look pretty awesome when you are getting ready for a battle, the enemy sprites also look good too. The scenery and the landscape all look decent as well. So with what they had, I think they did a fairly good job on the graphics. I think this is best exemplified when you are getting ready for a battle, the sprites look pretty cool then. So that is why I scored it a 9, from the landscape to the character designs to each of the spells and the attacks which each have their own little animation, I think they did a fairly good job on the graphics overall especially considering this game was released in 1988. One thing I will point out, is I like how the graphics are all put onto one screen rather than in the first final fantasy where it was segmented into portions. I personally think this is a pretty big step up from its predecessor.

Sound: 10
I am just going to come out and say it, I think the sound is perhaps one of the best, if not the best part of the game altogether. From the very beginning, you know that you will embark on an epic quest. I think the music is very fitting and it really does help to add to the plot of the game as well. It intensifies in the heat of battle and it really gives you an adrenaline rush and really gets you in the mood to dive straight into an intense battle. It isn't repetitive or boring or is the kind of music that drones on and completely ruins the game and renders it uninteresting. The sound and music are unique and it changes with just about every new area you enter, so it is not only intense and awesome, but it is fresh and new with every part of the game you go into which I think is a really nice touch because It would eventually get boring to here the same game music repeatedly. I think the soundtrack of this game is simply stunning, it has a more epic and strong sound to it than the first one. In many cases, the sound of this game is complementary to the theme and plot, so in the end it all really works out quite nicely in my opinion. Because of this, I think the sound is easily worth of a 10. Again, a big step up from final fantasy I.

Addictiveness: 10
I think this game has a fairly good replay value, found it rather addicting just because of the story line, sound and basically all of the other amazing features that this awesome game has to offer. There is really a lot of depth to this game which in my case is a good thing, I like a good challenge, especially if it takes a while to beat, that is what makes a game fun and interesting to me. This game may have taken me some time to beat, but in the end, I think it is wall all worth it. If you really take the time and enjoy this game, you can really get a lot of hours of enjoyment from it. I think this is perhaps one of the best repayable games I have ever played on the NES altogether. I just find it to be that good. With that being said, I can easily see myself playing this game again and again in the near future just because of how addictive and fulfilling I find it to be. That is why I believe it deserves a 10.

Story: 9
I think the story for this game is pretty good, it is very vast and complex in many ways, the story begins with the red wings attacking the city of Mysidia to steal their water crystal and then Cecil, the captain of the red wings, questions the Kings orders, he then loses his rank and is told to deliver a package with Kain to the Village of Mist. The game's story follows Cecil who is a dark knight (no he is not batman) and he basically tries to prevent the evil sorcerer Golbez of who you will find out later on in the story line, from stealing the powerful crystals to destroy the world, and then from there, the story just keeps getting better. One thing I find interesting is that the story takes place in a variety of settings: from castles to towers, to caves and forests, in between which you can heal up by going to a town to rest and recover your HP and MP. Overall I just think this is game has a great story line and there is really a lot to it. So this is why I think it deserves a 9.

Depth: 9
I think if the game had anything at all, it certainly had some depth to it. It took me a week and a half or so to beat the game, but it was worth it. This game really leaves you with a lot to do and it shouldn't turn out to be one of those games you beat in 5 minutes. It does take time, you will run into a lot of random monster encounters, and you will end up battling a lot of enemies, so the key here is patience, you're going to end up doing a lot of fighting, so I am just going to put that out there right now. This isn't like pokemon where you can just spray a max repel and call it a day. So do be prepared for that. I find it useful in many cases because you can level grind and get stronger and prepare for other enemies better. But sometimes it is wise not to fight every encounter, especially when you can't heal anywhere nearby. So fight only when absolutely needed or when you don't have a chance to run away. Overall though, this game does offer a lot and it will take some time to beat depending on the type of gamer you are, but I can ensure that you will a ton of hours of enjoyment out of playing this game. That is why I scored it a 9.

Difficulty: 7
To be honest, this game isn't all that difficult, there really isn't that much to it. When you are battling, you either use a physical attack, use magic or spell with a status effect that requires some MP (Magic Points) or you can run which you may have to do in a lot of instances to avoid unnecessary monster encounters. Sure it might be a little frustrating at times, but then again, every good game is, and it is best to just overcome those little challenges it throws at you and just enjoy it. I think the difficulty of this game is just right, it isn't extremely challenging to a point here no one wants to play it, and it isn't super easy to the point where no one wants to come back and play it again because it isn't challenging. It is just right, to do well in this game, especially against boss battles, you are going to have to have a smart plan or strategy set out if you want to succeed because you can't spam an attack move here, for example, Kainazzo, the water boss will summon a wave of water at you, kind of think of it like pokemon for instance, he will be weak to lightning type moves, so it is best to use you magic on enemies like that. So you are going to have to plan accordingly for each enemy you face. Overall though, I think this game is just right difficulty wise, even for a novice beginner, I think it is still relatively manageable to do well without to much trouble, so that is why I scored it a 7.

Overall: 9.7
Personally, this is my favorite final fantasy game and it always will be, there are so many great elements to it that really make it awesome to play and enjoy. I highly recommend this game to those seeking adventure, or those who are Final Fantasy fans. This is the game for you! I will definitely play this great game again in the near future. Hope you enjoyed this review! If you have any comments, or suggestions that could make my review better, please feel free to reply saying so! Thanks, and have a great day!

Razor-987 : Well it seems like someone was busy these past few days and if I may say so myself it certainly paid off since you were rewarded with this excellent review (very close to 2000 words too!). Although I'm not a huge final fantasy fan I did find this review interesting to read and hopefully if you plan on doing more reviews like this please let me know.

This was one of the games that I have played in the series and I really liked it. You did a great job with detailing the aspects of the game and he review was nice and lengthy.
