Ah, Super Mario Brothers! If there is a person that has not seen this game before, I will eat my hair (that being said, this generation focuses mainly on the games with 'the best graphics', so nobody my age or below seems to like games such as this beauty). If you have not played this game yourself, now is your perfect chance to do so; you can play it right here on Vizzed. This is a great site and you have no valid reason for disagreeing. I own this game myself on my NES, but maybe you don't, so play it here!?If you like this, then you will most likely like Super Mario Brothers 3, which we will get on to another time. Now to start this review for a gem on the Nintendo Entertainment system!~ Graphics ~
Before I get deep into this, I will just say that this was one of the earlier games on the system, therefore the?designers?did not yet have the required amount of skill and?practice?to create graphics like the ones in SMB2 and SMB3.??First of all, Mario does not have very much detail at all. I'm not one to judge on graphics, usually, but it seems to have become an important subject with modern reviews, so here we delve into graphics. ~ Mario may not have much detail, but he sure does have some nice animation in places. Skidding graphics were implemented, making changing direction look nicer. Walking looked better than some of the games in 2000 to 2005, but running was just a sped-up version of the walk cycle. It was rather simple, but when did I say simple was a bad thing? Graphics don't mean everything in a game, you know. To me they don't really mean anything, but it says I've got to review the graphics so I will. Technically, the graphics aren't?receiving?a high score today. I feel sad to give this a 4/10, but some of the graphics are just too simple. I mean, that Goomba's walk cycle. They could've at least put one more sprite in to make it look a bit better...~ 4/10 ~___________________________________________________________________________~ Sound ~Well, I'll start off with the normal theme. Doo doo doo, doo doo doo, doo ~?One does not simply forget that tune. Every Nintendo gamer has it wedged in their brain somewhere, and it is still catchy to me even today. People even love making songs to that tune, and I've had it set as my ringtone before. That catchy tune won't go away, darnit!?And then there is the underground theme. Oh boy is there the underground theme. Sure, it may be catchy but the tune is just lazy. It's just a looping tune, over and over and over and over and over and over-- oh fine, I'll stop! I was just making sure you got it. There are only 3 tracks in the entire game as well.?Whole new space for this one because it needs that space - The Castle theme. It is one of my favourite tracks in videogame history. It feels so tense, it literally makes you feel like you're in the evil kings lair and you're about to drop him into the lava below his bridge, then you?realize?he's a fake and the princess is in another castle. AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! (Seriously though, that irritated me the first time it happened.)?Yes, the castle theme may just be another short theme then loop, but it is amazing and has much more epicness to it.This here deserves a ranking that is high, because it only really has one out of three flawed tracks, and even that is still pretty catchy. I will?deliver a 7/10 to this section.~ 7/10 ~?___________________________________________________________________________~ Addictiveness ~Well, what do you think if I was playing this game on my NES before posting this? Hint: It is high.?This is a very addictive game to me for some reason, even though I have beat it many times. I'm not sure what is so gripping about it, but every time I see that cartridge in my drawer I think 'You know what? I think it's time for some Mario...' then I put it in my NES and waste the hours away dying at World 8. Yes, I'm bad at Mario. Don't judge me.?It is very addictive, and there is hardly ever a moment where I think of this game along with the thought 'I have nothing to do'. If this section got below a 6, I don't know what would get above a 6. 8/10 for this section here!~ 8/10 ~ ___________________________________________________________________________~ Story ~In a nutshell, a giant badguy steals the princess and turns all the toads into bricks, and then takes the princess and locks her up, and who saves her? LUIGI! No, just messing with you, it was Wario really.?...Ok, enough joking around. So Mario has to save the princess from the clutches of the evil king Bowser, yada yada yada same story in nearly every game. You can't expect anything new here, especially from a Mario game. I'm fine without stories anyway, but it won't stop me from rating it - This will receive a 2/10 because can you really call this a story? The only different thing from every game ever is the toads to bricks part, and that's one minor change. You can do better than this, Nintendo...
~ 2/10 ~___________________________________________________________________________~ Depth ~Oh, have I been waiting to talk about this. The depth is amazing for a game of this age. Eight worlds, each having four levels to hop around and even search for hidden warp zones and secret areas, and find hidden 1-ups too. Sadly, the depth can be rendered low if you know the secrets of the game. Knowing the secrets and all the glitches and techniques will allow you to beat the game in under 6 minutes! Well, they tried... The depth will be 9/10, because it is a big NES game without the warps! Yes, 9/10.~ 9/10 ~?___________________________________________________________________________~ Difficulty ~ Like a great game, the difficulty increases the further you get into it! 1-1 'This game is kinda easy... maybe I should go back to playing Blaster Master. I like a challenge.' 4-1 'Run run run run run run run, the Lakitu are coming!' 8-4 'HOW DO I GET OOOOOUUUTTTT?!' A great design that just kicks you in the face. The controls make the game slightly easier with the good responses though, so the difficulty will be a 4. It goes from easy to hard.
~ 4 ~ ___________________________________________________________________________ ~ Final notes ~
This game is great, but when you go into full detail it isn't exactly that gem any more. I haven't gone in enough detail - if I went into detail about the controls, I would sound much more positive about the game. I still enjoy the game as much as I did before though, it's just going into detail it isn't really that great... maybe it is just nostalgia that is making me give this a score of 8/10.The addictiveness REALLY helps the score though.
