Hello readers I am no other than MechaMento. Today I will be giving my opinions and thoughts on Super Mario World 2. I have already reviewed Super Mario World so you may think that doing a sequel (in this case a prequel) will not be that much different. The strange thing is, is that Super Mario World 2 is very diverse and actually a Mario game like none other. Remember to give me your opinions on my review but make sure it is constructive or else I will question you! I hope you enjoy it just as much as I have enjoyed making it. Have fun!

Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island

Graphics
Super Mario World 2 has a very unique graphics style and it is nothing like any other game. It looks as though it was drawn all in crayon and is very cartoony, maybe to give, what I call, the infant effect because it is based on Mario's beginning of life at the age of just a baby! Though it is all very attractive and what we want from a game it may be just an excuse to make the games size smaller by using a cartoon scheme. Most people will not be fussed but when we look at games like Donkey Kong Country, we may begin to think that they could of done a lot better at their job. Never the less I like it even if it is not at the consoles peak. It really sets the scene and suits this game exceptionally well, however is looks like I could almost make it on MS Paint and it could of needed a little more work and time put into its production, so that is the exact reason why I gave it a 9 out of 10.

Music
Nintendo did a great job at composing some fantastic tracks. All of the Mario games have got me humming the level tunes especially Super Mario World 1. Super Mario World 2 is certainly no exception to this list and the music is great! I really love the over world soundtrack, it is very catchy and does its job by getting you into the correct mood to play a Mario platformer. Nintendo made great use of the consoles sound system, I play the games with headphones on and I have to say the sound quality is great for a 1990's game. It has a L and R scale so you can hear certain sounds on one side of the ear and others on the other. The instruments are decent and come out clear, I think the developers did really well.
My favourite soundtrack has to be the theme to the final boss fight. It is fantastic, epic and really suits the area well. It actually makes me want to get up and dance and that is what I like about a game. I do not think any boss fight music could get close to it, not even the music from Mega Man games. It may not be the hardest boss in video game history but is one of the most epic and that is mainly to do with the great creation of the music.
The only down side I have with the Music is the fact that the songs are repeated and almost abused. Pretty much every overworld level has the same song which is pretty much going back to the times of Super Mario Bros 1 and 2. Even Super Mario Bros 3 had a different over world soundtrack on most levels. I did mention I really like the song but it can get annoying if it never ever changes. Also the world select music is very short and only lasts about 10 seconds, and then it just repeats again and again no stop. It reminds me of those 10 hour versions of videos on youtube!

Addictiveness
Super Mario World 2 is a game I will come back and play. The levels are pretty fun to run through and they seem to be nicely spread out and smooth to play on. There is a bit of a tipping point though and that is because it does not feel like a proper mario game. I know it is not meant to but there is this certain feel I just keep getting with Super Mario World 1 and the sometimes on the original Mario Bros games. I can not really explain the feeling but I can say that the original Super Mario World seemed a lot more smoother and of course more addictive to play. I think the developers could of put more effort in but the fact that it is a very unique Super Mario game it does in some sense defeat the objective.

Story
If you remember playing Super Mario World 1 you will remember that the first world is named Yoshi's Island. It would not take a genius to work out that Super Mario World 2 is specifically related to the first world which in this story is what I would call Mario's home town. This game dates back to when Mario was a little baby. He was then looked after by a group of Yoshis who would carry him around the all of the levels passing him onto the next Yoshi eventually reuniting Mario with his brother Luigi. I guess there is a little more of a story to this than any other platformer Mario game so i did give it a proper rating. I like the fact that it is more of a twist than just rescuing a princess like pretty much every other Mario game! Then again it is a platformer so you do not get much of a storyline and it is pretty much only explained at the start and end of the game with a few little pieces of text in between. So that was really why it got a low rating even though I had said that I thought the concept of the story was pretty cool!

Depth
To be honest here there is not much depth to any Super Mario platformer. They may be really fun to play and addictive but there is not much to it. All you really do is just run jump and complete every level successfully and then finally beat all of the bosses. Super Mario World 2 is no different in the sense of depth but it is quite diverse in every other topic. How ever this game does take you multiple hours to complete when doing a casual play through. Of course if you are a speed runner you could end up completing the game in under 2 hours or even 1 hour but if you actually want to enjoy the game it should take you roughly around 7. I decided it was best to also use that number as the depth rating

Overall
Overall I really enjoy this game. I may not play it as much as Super Mario World 1 but I have had 2 hour sessions playing it non stop. I think the developers of the game did very well and set up a great twist to the typical Mario cliches and gathered a brand new audience to the game. There is still room for improvement however. And I think this game could be even better than it could be. It would also be nice if you could have a secret level at the end of the game that will let you play the first level of Super Mario World as Yoshi with baby Mario on his back, that would make it link into the Mario saga much better than it did.

I hope you enjoyed reading my review. Remember to give tips and of course a few suggestions for the future will help me a lot. Also I do not like any of that pointless reply stuff so I will probably get a little mad if you do make a post like that. I hope you know what I mean because you certainly will find out if you do!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this review, I appreciate it. ~ MechaMento!

Hello MechaMento! I read your review, and I liked it.

However, I got some tips that may spice your reviews up, and possibly make them better:

Elaborate! It looks like you do elaborate, especially at a quick glance. However, in reading your Depth paragraph, it was quite vague to be honest.

"All you really do is just run jump and complete every level successfully and then finally beat all of the bosses."

Complete every level successfully; what constitutes as completing a level successfully? Are there puzzles to solve, enemies to beat, etc? I have played Mario games before, and I totally understand you, but to the first time gamer, what does he/she have to look forward to in Mario, especially this game?

"I guess there is a little more of a story to this than any other platformer Mario game..."

Again, to the first time gamer, what is usually typical of any platformer Mario game?

I guess that was only one tip, since the other parts of your review were excellent. Just elaboration is the seemingly small issue - easily fixed.

Nice job.

Sidewinder : Thank you for all of the tips, they will really help me in the future! I think you could very well be the very first person to actually read one of my reviews!

I was struggling to think when it came to depth. There is not that much to say about this game however you did find me something I could of added. Again you showed me some other stuff I could of done.

Any review suggestions? I am also considering doing an album review on the review central forum, do you think it would be successful? I am going to do the album Push the Button by the Chemical Brothers, by the way.

Nice review...enjoyed it very much.

The only thing I would have added to this review is the Level%. Getting 100% opens up bonus games to play, and a bonus level(per world). A great aspect of the game, in my opinion.

Also every new World you get to adds a new instrument to the music you hear when choosing a stage. (I can't remember if 100% in a world is needed to get them)

Other than that, good stuff.

Dragoon26 : I knew about the instrument adding thing with the world completion but the song is still annoying and short. I mean it is catchy but it does get on your nervs after a few loops!
I actually forgot about the bonus levels, I think I have only unlocked 4 or 5 of them through my play through of it. I never really tried for anything like that...

This was a pretty good review, you had an OK amount of detail, and it flows pretty good! You could add some more detail in this, but not bad. Keep it up.
