Hey guys! Just wanted to ask you guys a question! And don't worry, I'm not sad or stressed out or worried, I'm fine. I just want to know, if someone were to be sad, worried, or stressed out for something, what should he/she do? It would really be appreciated if you answer this question so whenever anything like this happens to me, I can be prepared. thanks! |

There are already several threads on this topic. A few are created by SunflowerGaming or Totts, I believe. As for my own advice? Never, ever, EVER close yourself off from others. I know it's hard to want to be around others when you're depressed, but being around others and talking to people who mean something to you? It's definitely the best medicine. They'll also keep you from making stupid mistakes during the times you aren't thinking so clearly. Open up to others and let them know what's going on. Tell them as much as you are able, and take their words to heart if they are good friends who want what's best for you. A good friend or family member won't lead you astray, even if you don't like what they're telling you. It's the best advice I can give and something I've had to learn myself. As for my own advice? I know this might be a little dumb, but I am stressed out a little bit about the TDV. I want to be able to do well, hold my lead and also get a few jerseys. I am just stressed because of all the competition I have going against me. I hope I can ignore the stress and pressure and just put it aside so I can do my best to win this thing. Other than that I am a bit overwhelmed with the homework I have in my ap class at school. I think that I can overcome this as the year goes on, because it will all be familiar routine by then. So other than that I am doing fine, but those are the things stressing me out as of now. Other than that I am a bit overwhelmed with the homework I have in my ap class at school. What I would recommend is talking to someone about your problem, take a step back take a deep breath and think about the problem and try to find a solution to it, and possibly take a nap if you are able to. Those almost always help me. I agree with most people that the best thing to do is to talk it out. First off you can get it off your chest and just rant away. Second you can get some great advice (or crummy depending on who you're asking) for that situation. Now if that doesn't work there's always other methods: If its something like homework another great idea is to complete the task in sections. Break it apart into a few sections at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed. If there's an essay that you have to do in a week set it up day by day. On the first day do your prewriting second day make your first draft third day edit forth day peer edit and so on and so on. That way you don't have to worry you get enough Another activity is doing a hobby that you enjoy. This can include sports crafts music anything! You were meant for a specific purpose so when you do things you like you feel more relaxed right? Then once you feel relaxed enough you can then tackle whatever was stressing you out. A final thing which sorta ties into the third thing is to listen to calming music. What's better to get rid of stress then to listen to the ocean or waves or even some happy music? Music can change one's mood depending on the song and person so using that knowledge listen to some motivational/relaxation music and you should start to feel better after a while. I think that's it at least that's all I can think of right now! mohammedroxx3 : There are a ton of good suggestions here that I completely agree with. Finding somebody to talk to, whether it is getting advice, or just somebody that you can vent to can be extremely therapeutic. Also all those suggestions about finding hobbies to break up the day are important to break the cycle of stress/sadness If you can't find something to enjoy, you'll never break out of the cycle. I've spend weeks rotating through everywhere from free clinics to state mental health institutions talking to people about anything you can imagine. By far, there is one thing I'd HIGHLY recommend to help you get over a situation that is really affecting your mood, whether it's a few rough weeks at work/school, or heaven forbid, something worse like losing a loved one. Cry. To be able to convince yourself you've emotionally been able to move on from a situation and are now ready to build yourself back up. And I'm not referring to being tearful for a while. I'm talking one of those powerful cries from deep within that can last 5 or 10 minutes. This doesn't have to be while talking with someone, but can be when you're just sitting by yourself and you let everything out. By doing this, your accepting your emotions, and the situation overall, and you can now move on. It takes a stronger person to realize your emotions than being the "tough guy" and holding your emotions in. Believe me, the medical literature supports this, and I've seen it first hand on multiple occasions. Showing emotion is part of human nature, and accepting this is the key to getting over any situation. There are a ton of good suggestions here that I completely agree with. I also want to point out, that there is a big difference between someone who's sad or temporarily stressed, and someone who's chronically depressed. Everyone goes through a certain amount of sadness in life, and it usually resolves itself through the grieving process, though it may be slow, but someone who is chronically depressed will be pretty much debilitated mentally and physically by it, and it should be dealt with professionally. Regardless, some things that are good for both sadness and depression is: -being around people(friends) -exercising every day -meditation(this has really been a good help to me at least) - and setting a goal that you want to accomplish, like finishing a painting, or building something. Something simple to keep you busy learning how to deal with depression is like learning how to do anything else, it takes practice.
