If you could drop any rule in sports, what would it be?  I wrote a paper a while back about the two line pass in hockey and they got rid of it two years later

Just one rule? Hmm... I think I would have to get rid of the overtime rule in football . You should have to play the entire 15 minutes, instead of this person scores, then the other team has to match it or whatever it is.

The football overtime rule is stupid. But the one that I would get rid of would be the shootout for hockey. since hockey is a team sport, the shootout has no place in hockey. It ruins the flow of the game, and is really dumb. They need to change it to something else.

Here are the following rules I would get rid of in the following sports.

Football- Agree with thing and patar. Get rid of the overtime rule as its not a good way to end the game.

Basketball- I would get rid of the held ball or tie-up rule, it just ruins the tempo and could ruin a game late. Either they get a steal or they foul.

Hockey- Agree with patar again, I would get rid of the shootout rule. Let both teams continue to play until the quarter ends and someone is up.

Baseball- I would get rid of the pick-off rule. Its rare that someone will be picked off in a baseball game and it just wastes time in an already long game.

Soccer- Similar to Hockey, I would get rid of the overtime free kicks. Keep the soccer game going until someone scores a goal and the period ends.

Oldschool41: For hockey, a game that ends only after a goal like that would not be ideal. For football, you have a week to prepare for the next game, but in hockey, you could be at it again the next day on the other side of the country. I think they need to add some new thing to fix it.

What I would do is after a 10 minute overtime, you go to a 5-3 power play for 2 minutes. You go until the time runs out, or the offensive team gets a penalty. If the defending team gets a penalty, another minute is added to the power play. So whoever scores the most goals wins. It needs work, but something like this would make more teamwork involved, and would be really exiting, and would make special teams more interesting.

And as for basketball, get rid of half the fouls. Can't watch the games because there are so many.

Carlin Once did a Piece on Sports Rules in "Napalm and Silly Putty". (Books Title.)
He Suggested that the Ban on Steroids be lifted.
I gave it a few minutes of thought and decided that it might be a good idea to do such a thing. These Players get a ton of cash and they deserve it. Why not "Roids" too. Get the most mileage out of them while we can.
It is too funny an idea to pass up.
If Steroid use was such a big deal then why does no one have Anti-Steroid Adds? (At least I have not seen any.)
We have Anti-Drug Adds.
We have Anti-Smoking Adds.
Why not pave the way for Anti-Steroids Adds?
Just a thought.
(By the way I'm kidding. I would never suggest any destructive behaviour. The Book reference should be enough. But This is the internet.)
Hope the jest "Flies".
Good Luck.
Peace.

If I could get rid of any sports rule I would get rid of the overtime rule in baseball when a game is tied. I was watching a baseball game today and I stopped watching it at the 11th inning because I was getting bored.

I actually like all the sport rules they keep the game balanced except for as some people stated overtime.
That would be the only rule I would lift all the others such as offsides are pretty fair.

Basketball:  I think there should be a limit on the amount of timeouts you can use in the last minutes of a game.  It is ridiculous when a team is down 8, and they foul, call timeout.  And it always goes to commercial and just takes forever.  The first 10 minutes of a quarter went by quicker than the last two.  For the NCAA tournament, get rid of the play-in games and go back to 64.

Football:  Pass interference rules are a little touchy, but in this age of pass heavy football you pretty much have to.  As far as overtime goes, I think the NFL should adopt a similar overtime to college football.

Baseball:  DH in the national league, but that'll never happen.  And get rid of the wild card play-in game.  It's ridiculous.

Gotta go with the NFL.  Running backs can't lead with their head anymore!?  It's completely ridiculous.  All of these new rules they are adding for player "protection" are completely ruining the game.  I understand the NFL is trying to protect themselves because of numerous lawsuits from former players, but do something else to protect yourself.  Make the players sign waivers if they want to play saying they can't file any lawsuits or something.  Pretty soon the game is going to be touch or flag football.
