Note: Oh geez, sorry about the ridiculous layout I used to have.
Link's Awakening is probably one of the most underrated games within The Legend of Zelda series. ?It stands out for sure, since instead of the story taking place in Hyrule or saving Princess Zelda, you, the hero, is a castaway and is trying to find a way home. I'm going to be as honest as necessary, and some things are just my opinion, too. Don't hate on me because you don't agree, thanks!
Graphics: 7 ? ? ?There is nothing in particular special about these graphics, but even though they are simple and typical, nothing is badly drawn, and the style is suiting for the gameplay.?
Sound: 8? ? ? ?The music is suiting. I love the happy music playing in Mabe Village(after you get your sword, of course) and the emotional music playing in the houses.(well, it feels a bit emotional in just my opinion..)
But, there wasn't much to the soundtrack at all.?
After you get your sword, the main theme music is what is played over the whole game, besides Mabe Village, Animal Village, In buildings, underground and in dungeons. It can get irritating at first, but there will be a point when you won't notice it at all.
Addictiveness: 7 ? ? ? ?Yep, it's a 7.(used to be a 10, but I was being too fangirly. Let's be honest here.) It wasn't the most addicting game I've ever played. It took me a bit less than two months to complete it, actually(1.I was probably stuck and didn't feel like playing 2.Had other games in mind) I once went, like, 5 days without playing it. But, Link's Awakening is the sort of game that you won't want to completely abandon until you've completed it. Everyone wants to know what happens afterwards.?
Story: 8 ? ? ? ?I like the story, it's a lot lot different, like I said before. It isn't unique when comparing it to others stories, but when it comes to Zelda, it definitely is. Link is traveling away from Hyrule on a ship, but it gets struck, and he ends up being a castaway. Marin, a young, good-natured girl, saves his life and brings him back to her home, hoping he'd wake up. I personally think Marin is the only good character, excluding Link. Anyways, from then on, a little friendship develops between the two, though nothing serious. Link wanted to get back home, but no one on the island knew about the world around them. An owl says to escape back to Hyrule, you must first awake the Wind fish, who sleeps in an egg. In order to awake the Wind Fish, you'll need to collect all 8 instruments. This owl that tells you where to go next from time to time. I don't want to spoil anything, which is why I won't say anything more. But, the story has a depressing feeling to it, I'll tell you that. The title has a lot to do with the story, for sure. I
Depth: 7 ? ??The game is moderately long, and it takes a while to beat, since some of the dungeons and puzzles take lots of time. There isn't a whole lot to it at all. In this version, you can collect photos, but you can't go back to achieve any you forgot to earn. There is only one shop, and I find it rather ridiculous. There also aren't many inhabitants, or, residents, on this island, which gives the island a big lonely feeling.
There are few secrets, but not very many for a video game. Some secrets include a special song that plays if you enter you name as "ZELDA", secret music in Richard's Villa after 2-something minutes, a color dungeon that lets you change the color of your tunic(kinda a secret), a secret ending if you never die(there's a number by your file name), and a secret, but very powerful weapon, a boomerang, which you'd achieve if you complete that obnoxious sign maze!
Difficulty: 6? ? ? ?If you are good at problem solving and finding clues, this game would be a piece of cake. But, some of it isn't very obvious, so sometimes you'll need a walkthrough in handy. Some bosses are so frustrating, but as you progress, it gets easier, a LOT easier, because you'd have all of these gidgets and gadgets. The controls are very easy, you should learn how to play in a snap.
The dungeons weren't too bad, though many a total pain. I have to say, Eagle Tower was the most TORTUROUS dungeon in this game. Countless pits, lots of barricades, this glass ball you have to take with you everywhere, etc.
Oh, and more of why it's a 6? Well..Sorry to blurt this out but, if you achieve that boomerang, then you can defeat the final boss once in for all with just ONE(yes, one) hit with your boomerang! A lot more convenient t
Here's a tip:
In order to play this nowadays, you have to use either an emulator(like on vizzed) or buying it for a 3DS from the eshop.
Both have these really handy saving functions.
Vizzed has, y'know, f2 and f4, a 3DS let's you use that 'Restore Point' function. They both let you do the same thing, which is save instantly wherever you are. Take advantage of those functions, you'll need them around the end of the game, or anywhere when you want to "teleport" back to where you were. For example, at the end of the game, you have to defeat 4 bosses in a row, and on top of that, without any fairies. So, you can instantly save a checkpoint at where you were, so, when you die, you won't have to start over!
Probably some of you figured that out already, but I had to point it out, the game would feel near impossible without it.
Overall: 8 ? ? ? Overall, Link's Awakening is great. I think it's definitely worth playing, but it does have issues...like every other game. I think 8 is a great score, and I just think it's what it deserves.?
