Super Mario Bros 2 (NES) Review.
Super Mario Bros 2 is a classic title, but if your not a "Super" Mario fan or a Retro gamer. You most likely have memories of Super Mario Bros 1, or 3, why? Well, let's take a quick look back at the history of the game. . .
Super Mario Bros 2 started out as a Game called Yume Kojo, or in English, Doki Doki Panic. . .yes, I'm not fooling. . .Doki Doki Panic was a Japinese only title that would feature 4 Ninjas who were out to stop an evil King called Wart. But about 2/3 way throught development Nintendo saw that the Mario series was about to blow through the roof. super Mario Bros 3 was quite away off, so they though it would be best to release Super Mario Bros 2 by using the Doki Doki Panic engine and finish the game really fast, and avast, we have Super Mario bros 2. Instead of featuring the 4 Ninjas like originally planned, they were replaced with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. this really explains why their are no Goombas or Koopas or (yours truly) Bowser in the Game, And we have Shy guys, Pokeys and Wart instead. not to mention that you pickup baddies and throw them at other enemies to kill them instead of the traditional goomba stomping fun. Now that I have given you a little history lesson, on to the review!
~Graphics~ 6
Not to much to say here, the Graphics are clean but a tad darker was used then you would expect to see in a Mario (or really Doki Doki Panic) game. As for the enemies and Bosses, they are not exactly original, unless you can call a three headed snake or a spiked walking cacti "original" . But were looking at Doki Doki Panic more then we are Mario at this point, so I better get used to it. I would have honestly put more down for graphics, but I have a really hard time getting over the hurdle of "oh, the graphic are nice and clean, and bright" :/ well pity me, onto Difficulty.
~Difficulty~ 8
This title is quite a hard one, especially for a Mario game. You know how there is a general rule where you head right to get to the end of a level, well this game takes is as a more of a suggestion, Level 1 and 2 of each world, follow this plan, but the third level has you climb a tower to nab a Key and take it to t the bottom. . .while having to avoid a floating mask that is CONSTANTLY trying to hit you and make you drop the key. And the last level is just, almost impossible. Running around the giant palace while trying to find the key and taking it around (whilde avoiding the relentless Mask as well) just makes the game aggrivating to me. I'm not the best Mario player mind you, but no one should have to put up with this.
~Depth~ 6
there are 7 worlds with three levels each (excluding world 7 which has only 2 levels, witch comes out to 20 Levels for all you math nerds) The game will take you about 2 to 3 hours to complete, on average. .. if you are skilled at Mario titles that is. their are 4 characters you can play as, and they all have different stats. Mario is you basic unit with medium jump, pull and run. (pull is how fast you can pick up enemies or pull turnups out of the ground) Toad had great speed and even better run, but this jump is very lousy. Luigi has jump beyond compare and can almost float he is so light, but he has a lack of pull and speed. Peach has poor pull and bad speed and a medium jump. her advantage is that she can float in the air by pressing A while jumping. The stats of characers do help add to the playabilityand can help when your stuck in a place and they also add variety. to the game.
~Sound/Music~ 6
Hey! Finally something Mario-y in the game! at least after putting us in this starnge world you give up some music that takes
us back to the Mushroom kingdom! The music sounds cherry in all, but their are only 3 different tunes (if I am correct in that the final boss does not have his own tune) Land/Sky, Cave/Dungeon, and Boss music, it sound nice in all, in fact it sounds very good, and was very enjoyable, but music was never something that stood out in Mario game s like it did in Zelda titles, it is classic, but not epic. Grand music didn't start to appear in Mario Games untill Super Mario Galaxy over twenty years later. (and yet Zeld had grand music by their third game, Dark world anybody?)
~Addictiveness~ 5
I was never a hardcore Mario fan (ok, maybe I was when I was 5, but that was a long time ago) I played through the game once (with countless savestates) and was done with it. not to slam on the game, it was a good game, but wasn't exactly a great game. It's one of those titles that you like or you don't (Like Sonic CD).
~Story~ 7
Mario games don't usually have good Story, but this is an exception to that rule. The story starts out where Mario walks into a cave and opens a door. After opening the door he falls into another world called Subcon. In this world he must travel to the castle of Wart who lives in the sky and free the land of this evil king. It's a simple story, but honestly it beats "Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser! Mario (for the umphteenth time) must save her" anyday. You go on to find you that Mario was just dreaming any you wake up at the end of the game after defeating Wart. Hence the name Subcon, as in Subconcious.
~Overall~ 7
The big complaint athat I have for this game is that
Now, lets review what we have learned.
PROS:
New type of gameplay style
New/better plot
Good music
CONS:
Not really a Mario title
Difficulty is to high
Mario is NOT a ninga!
No Fire flowers. or other Mario elements
