The Legend of Zelda started off as a normal game that was set up in the fantasy world of Hyrule. It was very fun. Zelda 2: the Adventure of Link was not fun. Really hard. Then Link to the Past came and showed all of earth the Zelda serie's true colors. It says in Hyrule Historia
(coming to the U.S.A soon!) That 3 goddesses created the earth and left behind the Triforce. Then they instructed Hylia to guard the Triforce. Demise came from the earth and all out war happened. Long story short, lots of religion.

As a Christian on I'm against this stuff, but Zelda is SO fun to play. Now it's your turn. Can you ignore all the religion in Zelda, or just don't play it all together? I play all the time. Answer in the comments.

It's a story. It shouldn't get in the way of enjoying the game. It's just a story. To take it seriously enough to allow it to stop you from enjoying the game is just silly.

Well i don't think a made up religion should make you stop playing a wonderful series such as the legend of Zelda. Also, I don't think miyamoto meant for it to be a serious religion.

Honestly I couldn't image the world of The Legend of Zelda without the religion, since its an important part of the backstory,
Your religion shouldn't really effect how much you enjoy a game.

I really don't see it as religion just because they're gods doesn't mean that there's a religion that follows them.  It's like legends like Paul Bunyan created the Grand Canyon type of stuff.  So it doesn't really bother me.

alsonic : Actually, Zelda was based very heavily on Christian origins.

At first it was Christianity, then the three gods were introduced, then in OOT the gods became godesses.

But the creation story in OOT is very much based off of the Bible.

it even says that Nyru created the law, or moral code. and that farore created the life forms who would uphold the law.

Zelda 1 had a bible like book called the book of magic.

In either LTTP or Zelda 1 the Japanese version had a "holy book" I think it may have been the book of mudora.

Zelda 2 had a church in it.

In LTTP the loyal sage and Agahnim are called priests in the Japanese versions.

The sanctuary and Temple of Time resemble churches.

Official artwork was revealed of Link kneeling before the crucifix.

Yeah, the Zelda series once really heavily referenced Christianity and even imfamously tied Gannondorf into Islam.

All the reference is pretty cool actually, Now however, the reference has somewhat been dropped.

It's kinda like the chronicles of Narnia in a way, The religion is based off of Christianity but not the same as Christianity.
But that is something that I think we should like.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

Believe it or not, I started playing Zelda back when the first one was still new (I think. Not sure when the release date was), and loved it, but once we ran across the reference to their religion, we quit playing. I thought Zelda games were evil after that, and still believed that up until about three years ago, when I got bored one night, and decided to look for a game to download, and I stumbled onto a mobile rip of the original Zelda. Since I didn't really remember why we decided it was evil back in the day (I was only four or five), I figured I would play this one and see what it was like, and I'd delete it if it was evil for some reason. I ended up completing it, and instantly became a fan of the series. I did have a bit of a shock when I tried Wind Waker as my next one, because, as sword legion already put it so well, it was far different in the religious referrences, and used religion heavily. In the end, I found nothing disturbing about it, as I figured it was just a fun story, and meant nothing really, by way of religion. Made up people (still say their elves, but whatev), made up world(s), made up religion and gods/goddesses. It all goes hand in hand. There are no real goddesses that created life, just like there are no such places as Hyrule and Hylia. I play other games that have goddesses and odd religious referrences as well. Take my layout for example. lol Harvest moon relies heavily on the harvest goddess.
I myself would much rather play a game that has gods and goddesses in it, than a game that has references to or apperances by satan (I found a game like this by accident a few days ago) and ill used references to my God.
The way I see it is, a game is about having fun, and as long as you're comfortable playing it, and you aren't comprimising your religious beliefs to play it, then it's cool.

alsonic : ok, here's how it goes:

Godesses create Hyrule

When they leave, they left behind the Triforce at their leaving point and that place where they left was called the sacred realm

Demise attacks Hyrule and trys to take over the the Godess Hylia and obtain the Triforce.

Hylia sends it skyward on a hunk of rock (the Godess statue) and Skyward Sword happens.

Link gets the Triforce and kills Demise in the present. . . and then in the past :/

Link loses the triforce and 100 years pass

Ocarina of time happens and Gannondorf snags the Triforce of power but fails to rule Hyrule more then 7 years

Link get's lost in the woods and becomes a stalfos (post Majoras Mask) and is now Hero's Shade

Twilight falls on hyrule, Link stop's Gannondorf again

hang on a second. . .. (I'll edit this latter)

I'm a Christian and I honestly think its pretty cool to see what kind of religion the developers came up with. A made up religion shouldn't stop you from playing the best franchise in gaming history. Pretty much every game with magic and monsters has some kind of god or goddess in it. Like Fire Emblem for example.

Seriously, now? Come on, people. How does Zelda having its own religion bother you? That's like saying that you don't like Harry Potter because there are wizards, or you don't like Percy Jackson because there are all those Greek Gods and Goddesses. The Zelda gods provide a vital backstory. Without it, there would be no Demise, and since Demise is the father of all monsters, and Ganondorf himself is just Demise's hatred passed through the world, there would be no story without it. Every good video game has to have a backstory.
