A very solid remake of Super Mario Brothers 2! If you are a huge fan of the original, but wish there was more to it, this is the game for you!

All the mechanics, characters, and music is the same as the original, just the levels have been altered, rearranged, and messed around with to give you a new experience on an old game. Therefore, a lot of my ratings are the same on how I would rate the original.

Starting with the graphics, I gave it a 9 because all animations, characters, and scenery fits very well together. When I first played the original game, I found all the vibrant colors, different scenery levels, and the characters/enemies to be rather amazing for the Nintendo Entertainment System, so this was no exception when playing this remake. However, it is not exactly PERFECT, as I have seen better graphics on Nintendo, but it is suitable enough for playing on.

The sound I gave an 8 because of how catchy and fun it is! The first level music can get in your head all day if you are not too careful, and the boss music stays dramatic but not too flashy. And when you face Wart, the music is just a perfect amount of excitement and drama. The only problem I have with the sound is that there is not a very large amount of songs in the game, and it can get a bit monotonous. Even if the music was the best thing ever, hearing the same songs over and over can give you a headache. I know that Nintendo games can hold more songs than what was on here, so that deserved a knock or two down from its score.

As for the game's addictiveness, I gave it a 7. The game COULD be played again if you wanted to try a different combination of characters, or perhaps a challenge run, not letting yourself use Princess Peach to make it harder or something... but I do not think it is a game I would replay right away. Personally, I would need some time to pass before I would play it again. Even though it is a fun, new twist on an old game that is quite enjoyable, it does not have that charm to make me want to replay it right away.

I would say the story is its worst aspect; even in the original it was rather brief and poor. Mario has a weird dream of another world while hearing shouts for help, and when he wakes up, he finds everything he saw in his dream. That is all the story that is ever mentioned, the rest you have to gather on your own as you play. From what I gathered, after the poor introduction, Mario and the rest of his crew are following the faint cries for help as they go through the different levels. The storyline does not change in this game from the original, either, so its score remains a low 3.

To be honest, the storyline was better in the game Super Mario Brothers 2 was based off of, "Doki Doki Revolution," where they have an entire family get sucked into a storybook that they all have to go through to save a race of angel looking things. It is not much better, but it makes a lot more sense.

As for the game's depth, I give it a 7. It still has a fair amount of levels to go through, though it probably could have more if the people who remade this wanted to. Still, there is a little more than enough levels to be played through, thus its score.

The difficulty may be a little higher than the original, thus why I gave it a 7. Some levels may have you abusing save states to avoid taking a hit, as there is some guessing involved to navigate some levels. One level even had a door that takes you back to the beginning! Still, it certainly is not impossible, just takes some getting used to. If you use Peach, the difficulty could be less.

In the end, the game gives you a little twist on the original; adding a little more difficulty and frustration, but other than the new levels, essentially the same game. I gave the game a 9 as it made me relive one of my favorite Super Mario NES games!

I enjoyed this game too. Good review. And I never really thought about how much easier the game was with Peach.

Wow, big review, good job.

So, is this game harder or easier than the original game? I guess I have to try it out sometime.

Great job on the review with great detail! I always appreciate when it feels like the reviewer spent a lot of time playing the game and wants to share the pros and cons to playing it.

As far as the game itself goes. I enjoy SMB2 but don't usually play hacks. I'll have to give this one a try and see what it's all about! Thanks for the suggestion.
