I have proof! The mario bros. 2 wasn't a true sequel you might argue that mario bros. 3 was the 2nd mario right well no sadly because it added a lot! of new power-ups and some were never seen again so it was technically a branch from the tree. So I think next is super mario world again like super mario bros. 3 it had some power-ups never seen again *looks at cape feather* anyway so that brings us to super mario land (I think) which was a traditional mario game believe it or not besides daisy and not peach but that doesn't matter the only flaw is that and the plane so there eh have it super mario land is the true sequel to the mario on the Nintendo entertainment system well if you have proof that it's NOT then post back and if I'm right then could you send me 5 Viz or less thanks PEACE OUT!

LoLz2447 : I don't think that is correct. Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally going to be the game that in America is known as Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels. It was in Japan released as the second Super Mario Bros. but was thought to be too hard for the people across seas. We got stuck with Super Mario Bros. 2, the one with the plants, Wart, and Princess Peach as a character. In Japan, I believe it was called Super Mario Bros. USA. But in reality, it was really some other game, with Mario sprites added into it. So it wasn't ever really supposed to even be a Mario game, but the difficulty of the real Super Mario Bros. 2 game kept it away from the states until Super Mario All-Stars.

Just because it wasn't released as the sequel in the USA doesn't mean it wasn't the true sequel. Things aren't determined on whether or not they are released in America. As much as many like to think, we don't dictate everything. The original Super Mario Bros was made in Japan, not the USA. The true sequel was also made in Japan, and America just gave it a different name. So the 'Lost Levels' is the true sequel unless you think releases in America determines that (which it doesn't).

My question is in what world does the fact that a game adds a lot of new powerups that you might not see again make them not sequels? Does that mean that Mortal Kombat II isn't a real sequel because it had many fatalities and some enemies that weren't seen in other Mortal Kombat games? Are pretty much all the MegaMan games not sequels of eachother because the new abilities are pretty much not seen in the later ones? See the lack of logic in the argument with the feather? I mean, Super Mario World had a few new items, but they kept pretty much all the classic ones. How is it not considered some type of sequel? Powerups don't decide the place in a franchise.

First I want to say that there is no way this game is the sequel to the original SMB game.

Aside from points already made, you kinda contradicted your own point by saying SMB 2 was too different...well what about this game? This game is completely different than anything SMB related up to that point. The whole makeup of the game and enemies is completely different...and let's not forget that you don't even fight Bowser.

Well guys, it depends what he means by "sequel". If he means the direct sucsessor to SMB, no. In that case it's definitely SMB:TLL or SMB2. If he means a game that is presentable as a sequel due to similar elements, maybe, but in that case more SMB3. Just my opinion.

kelton : No that's not really what he said. If you read his original post he states that SMB 2 IS NOT the true sequel to the original and that SML IS.

Also he contradicts his point several times in his original post. If you read it again you will see what I am talking about.

In my opinion, I don't think Super Mario Land is the sequel to Super Mario Bros. I think more that it is the first game of Mario Land series (Mario Land games were only realised on the Game Boy, so this is a different series). By the way, the real sequel of Super Mario Bros wasn't Super Mario Bros 2 on NES or on the Famicom Disk System. Before these games, there was Super Mario Bros Special for NEC's PC-8801. It was the real sequel.
