So I was reading an article the other day (don't remember where I saw it) that talked about upcoming junk food taxes.

Thoughts?

Is this going to have the desires results? Is taxing something a way to get people to use less of something?

Also, if you look at the demographic of the people who need this the most (to eat less junk food) they are also more often than not also lower income people. Is this going to actually change eating habits for them or simply make getting through their days tougher because they will have less money available?

All I see this doing is making more people struggle for food.

The problem is healthy food is generally more expensive than junk food, thus why many low-income people buy it; Cheap, staves off hunger for a little longer, can buy in bulk, and will last longer than healthy food.

A better solution would be to make healthy food more affordable. I am not sure if that is truly possible as I do not know the costs of farming and would not want to cheap out the farmers on money.

Junk food is not like cigarettes; raising taxes for it as a dissuasion to it is just harmful. Unless they want to use the taxes from the junk food to make healthier food more affordable (I seriously doubt that), then sure, go for it! Otherwise, we are going to have more starving people. And for people who are financially stable, its those people's choices for choosing unhealthy food, not up to the government.

Although it may sound good, but I think that it is not good at all. Like first, where do they draw the line of junk and something in between? Second, why should the government say that you should eat a certain kind of food? In America, you are supposed to have freedom. That includes what you eat, and putting taxes on only junk food, is a limit on your freedom. Why should junk food be taxed more? As citizens, we have every right to eat junk food three meals a day, 365 days a year. Increasing taxes won't help, and is not right at all, in my opinion.

My thoughts are: All they want is MONEY. That is what they are doing with those Taxes... I see no point in all of the taxes otherwise.

thenumberone : I agree with you on that one as well. I would find it hard to believe that it would get passed once it the issue was raised on a national level.

patar4097 : freedom does not mean being allowed to do absolutely anything you want. And with the introduction of Obamacare that government is going to start taking more of an interest in what people eat. They now have the justification to do it. I'm actually surprised that this hasn't been raised on countries with universal healthcare systems.

I don't think  there should be tax on anything edible. People need to eat and you are making people pay more for it. If this is just so the government can make money they wouldn't be making a lot of money anyway.

geeogree :
"surprised...universal h.care systems."
In europe, there are 2 thinks i felt were good ideas.
1.uk, illegal to advertise certain things like cereal that dont have enough nutrition/too much junk in it. As a result less hooking kids, far better though is that cereals like coco pops actualy made there cereal healthier to allow advertising to continue.
And 2nd in, sweden i think, its ilegal to aim adverts at kids. I think thats a great idea. Of coursd the best thing is parents teaching there kids good diet.
I think persuading people to eat less junk is better than trying to make it more expensive.

thenumberone : good luck with that one. I agree with the premise but I don't see it happening over here any time soon which is unfortunate because it would definitely help things. I know my girls wouldn't ask for certain things if they hadn't seen an advertisement for it on TV.

But advertising in and of itself is a cancer of society in my opinion. We spend millions (or billions) to push products that most of the time are luxuries when people all over the world can barely scrape together a meal or 2 a day.

Micheal Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, already did something similar to this. He banned all 16 oz. and up sugary drinks. Everyone is saying that it won't get people healthier, and I agree. You can pass all the laws you want that regulate actions, but ultimately it is up to the individuals to condition themselves. You can make drugs and prostitution illegal, but it won't stop people from using them. You can tell your kids "don't do this," but they won't listen if they don't want to follow their parents instructions.

Now for a different aspect of this law. Not everyone who avoids healthy foods does so because they want to dislike them. I can't get myself to eat any vegetables unless it was to save my life. I don't want to be a picky eater, but there isn't much I can do about it right now.

Any time you put a dollar incentive on consumables (not just food) you are changing people's selections.  I hate the fact that New York City has made transfat illegal.  That's complete garbage and an infringement on my freedoms of choice.  The communist leftists want to control all the aspects of my life for my own safety.  It kills me.

Saying that bit of inflammatory rhetoric.... If one makes it more expensive to do something, fewer people do it.  Taxing junk food and making it more expensive would drive people to make healthier choices.  Costs would cut down for healthcare and people would be more productive instead of calling in to work fat.  Or sick.  Life expectancy goes up and people live longer and healthier.  Taxes increase gov't income and help to pay for other social programs because the government isn't propping up an obese American population.  Workers compete on the world stage and the United States makes a comeback.

And it all starts with taxing garbage food.
