First off, Minecraft CANNOT be redistributed even both people HAVE bought it (They can just login to minecraft.net and re-download it) Doing so is illegal. Secondly, Minecraft DOES run on Windows XP. It runs on XP, Windows 7, and Linux by default.

Minecraft will run on XP, it's just your graphics card or Java Version that's not upto scratch. I'd get the Xbox version or update your OS if I were you, XP is going out of date soon.

Look, If you want to play Minecraft in PC just download the game in the site minecraft.net, but if you want to play it with servers, go make an account on minecraft.net, then go to mineshafter.appspot.com then go to settings, log in your Google account, then link your account from Minecraft to Mineshafter with the password, then press connect, after it connect you can now play Minecraft with Mineshafter BUT you need to download the Mineshafter.proxy, after downloading you log in your account in Mineshafter, then walla BUT another one is that you can only play servers that support Mineshafter, that thing happened since Minecraft updated from 1.00 I think, you can't play servers that doesn't support Mineshafter, that's all I can do to help I hope it helped you
