As much as I like Sonic, I'm going with Mario on this one.  Mario has just been much more successful than the blue hedgehog since he debuted in 1981 on the arcades.

For me its an easy choice, I'm a Genesis man so I would pick sonic all day long. The Mario games for the nes and snes are not bad games but I would rather play sonic any day of the week.

I was very intereted in Mario and Sonic equally when I was a kid. One of my first consoles were N64 and Genesis with Mario 64 and Sonic 2. Today, I'd say that the winner is Mario. He just has the upper hand to this day.
