Metroid: Other M is the most recent release in Nintendo's Metroid series. It offers a switch from the classic metroid games and the prime games, I would describe it as a mashup of first person metroid and third person metroid, along with something new. The game features a much larger emphasis on story this time around, with character bios and cutscenes every 30 minutes on average.
GAMEPLAY- 8.5
The gameplay in Other M is somewhat more of a beat-em-up this time around, it is in a third person view and you will commonly be button mashing the attack button, firing your beam at the Bottle Ship's weird inhabitants. If you jump on enimies, samus will land on the enimies shoulders and you will be able to fire straight through their head, it's pretty awesome. You can also switch to first person view by pointing your wii remote at the screen and from there you will get a view from inside samus' visor and you will also be able to shoot missiles. In between the gameplay there are lengthy cutscenes, but they do not detract from the game experience in any way. Overall pretty fun.
GRAPHICS- 9
The graphics are very impressive, some of the best you will see on the wii. Eviroments teem with life and Samus' power armor will shine. Everything is really, really beautiful. Enough said.
SOUND- 8
The sounds are crisp and clear, and the soundtrack isn't as memorable as previous installments in the metroid series but it is still quite good. No problems in this category.
ADDICTIVENESS- 7
It's a perfectly addictive game the first time around, with its great gameplay and engrossing story, but after you beat it one time there isn't much left for a second time around.
STORY- 9
The story plays a much bigger role in this game, more than any other Metroid game to be released. When I was playing it I was reminded of Metal Gear Solid, with it's
lengthy storytelling sequences. They can be 20 minutes at times, maybe more. However, don't be turned off by the
amount of cutscenes, because all are entertaining and will keep you on the edge of your seat, providing many questions that all eventually get answered. There are also character bios that you can view at anytime. This time around, samus has a team with her, each person exploring different parts of the game's setting, the bottle ship. It's a giant, huge..ship. In outer space. You are always alone however, sometimes meeting up with your allies. At times you will be faced with outdoor enviroments and then it will be revealed that what you were just in was just a computer generated illusion. The cutscenes have well voice acted dialogue and feature a nice amount of action. If you want a great story, look no further than this game.
DEPTH- 8
In typical metroid fashion, new upgrades become enabled as you progress in the game, gaining new missiles, bombs, and the like. Instead of finding the upgrades however, you actually have everything from the start, and just have to wait for permission to use them by your captain, Adam. It's not insanely deep but there is a good amount of content here. Also, a great fighting system that is fun to use.
DIFFICUTLY- 7
The game itself isn't hugely difficult, with the ability to regain some health when it becomes low and being able to replenish missiles whenever you need (you just can't get hurt when regaining health otherwise the process stops). The boss battles are really the only challenging part of the game, you may find yourself doing boss fights many times before defeating them. The bosses are great fun, by the way.
VERDICT- 9
I am giving this game a 9/10 because it does something different with the series, and dives into the story of samus aran's past. I hope Nintendo doesn't do a metroid game in this fashion again, but it is way cool to play and a very engrossing, fun game with plenty of variety in enemy types and events in the game and story. It took me about 10 hours to complete. It may not be an overly long game but it will keep you entertained until the bitter end.
