We pretty much consider ourselves the dominant species on this planet. But the question is, are we the most dominant species that ever lived on this planet? Jurassic Park, for the NES, gives us a chance to explore how a man armed with explosive arsenal pits against the largest and most ferocious creatures to ever exist. For those who have seen the movie, you know what the point of this game is going to be. Get yourself off an island infested with dinosaurs who want your flesh for supper, and your bones as toothpicks. This game seems to be a fairly underrated game because of how few people there seems to have even played it. If the idea of blowing up giant reptiles with a bazooka-like weapon, give this a try.

Graphics: 6
Jurassic park is an above 3rd person view game. All directions are fair game to explore in this game. I shouldn't have to tell you what kind of environment this is. Most of it is set in the jungle. With a wild jungle, you expect vast thick trees all over the place with green everywhere you see. This game sadly does not quite give you the most jungle feel. In a lot of areas, there is over twice as much open space as trees. There is surprisingly more browns and oranges than rich green. Don't get me wrong. The graphics aren't horrible. The shadowing is done pretty well, giving it a descent three dimensional look to it, which is quite impressive for an NES game. Most of the dinosaurs are very well done and you can pretty much tell what everything is supposed to be. But very large dinosaurs like the T-Rex and Triceratops could be put in an early SNES game. Aside from the bland colors in most of the levels, the only other complaint are the game sprites of the two children. They are very box shaped and just odd looking. But definitely not bad for NES.

Sound: 6
I will start with the sound effects. There are very few. You would expect that with all the dinosaurs running around, you would hear a lot of roars, snarls, growls, and screeches. Instead, almost the only sound effect you hear are booms from your gun. Other than that, the only other sounds you get are when you collect eggs and ammo, when you get stomped on, or when you get hit or electrocuted. They done well, but there is just so few of them, that you pretty much don't notice. This is a case where music highly overpowers the sound effects. Where the sound effects failed miserably, the music is pretty great. If you had to picture what jungle music is like in a blasting game, you might get something like the music you get here. The boss music is very appropriate as well. Music gets a perfect score here, but the fact that it only accounts for half the sound score, the overall sound is still just barely around par.

Addictiveness: 6
Jurassic Park is pretty fun, but there are a few things that bring it down, and one thing you just have to get used to. The controls of this game is pretty hard to get used to. The part that is awkward is getting yourself to quickly face where you want to shoot. The movement is clean, but you would expect that if you push right, you immediately face right. Instead, you have to hold it for a second because the character loops around, meaning he faces the three other directions first. If you stop holding the direction you want to face, you will likely stop on direction short, making you completely miss your target. It just takes getting used to. The parts that bring it down are the repetition and difficulty without an appropriate amount of life. The game typically has the same process. Collect all the eggs in the area to get an ID card to get into another area, access the correct terminal, and get out of the level. It gets pretty repetitive. This game is also very difficult. Though that is fine with me, you get like 4-5 hits before you lose a life. There are a lot of question boxes that restore your life, but the problem is, half those question boxes are explosives that take about half your life or kill you. It is almost not worth risking it. You get 4 continues, but that is just not enough with how hard the stampede segments and boss fights are. If you lose all of your continues, you gotta start all over. Starting over can be a pain when you played for an hour.

Story:8
This game is based off of the movie, but it only loosely follows the events. But this game still holds up on it's own. Before each level, you get a short description of what is going on, and what you need to do. So every level makes sense, and it gives some descent development as far as an NES game is concerned. This isn't your typical random level that leads you to your destination. Your missions typically are to find the two kids, restore power to the park, destroy the raptor nests, and get a helicopter to get you off the island. It is pretty well developed, so you don't feel like you are aimlessly wondering around.

Depth: 4
This is probably the first review I have ever done where I rated the depth so much lower than the story. But there really isn't much for you to do. As I stated in the addictiveness section, each mission does the same thing. You are finding eggs all the time to get cards to access terminals. The other problem is that when you play Jurassic Park, you expect to see a lot of different dinosaurs. Though there are a crap load of dinosaurs coming at you left and right, they aren't different. All the dinosaurs you see in the first level are pretty much the same. You will mainly see same three dinosaurs in every single level. The only variety you get are during the Triceratops stampedes and the T-Rex fights. There is one section where you are rowing in a raft, but that is it. The game is very repetitive.

Difficulty:8
This game is flat out difficult to get all the way through without save states. When you first play, getting used to the controls will end up with you get your butt handed to you on a broken platter. But even when you get used to it, it is still hard. The smallest mistakes like bumping into a little dinosaur that is hiding behind a corner by the doorway will add up quick. But the real challenge is when you go through the stampedes and the T-Rex fights. The Stampedes are hard because they are about 3 strait minutes of huge Triceratops running down the screen. You have to memorize the patters if you want to make it through this segment without losing some lives. Given that it is about 3 minutes, that is saying something. The second one is hard because they run even faster. The T-Rex is a pain in the butt. You can only hit him while his head is down, and he is charging at you. Otherwise, your gun does nothing. And he does not sit still for a second, making him that much harder to fight. You pretty much have to be in his heads path for a guaranteed hit. But if his head touches you, it is an instant lost life. But that isn't even the worst part. During this fight, the girl is following you (the second time, both kids). And I say following loosely. They are more like running around your general position like a chicken with it's head cut off. If they T-Rex eats the kid(s), you lose a life and have to start the fight over again. It also doesn't help that if you lose a continue during a level, you start over with NO ammo. You heard me. Nothing. You gotta find it, and random ammo is scarce. Your main source of ammo in the game is blasting dinos, but if you have no ammo to do that, you have a problem. But the worst part is the fact that throughout the game, there are many ? boxes that can fill up part of your health. But half of those boxes contain explosives that take about half of your life. So if you are below half, you are dead. It is almost not worth trying to gain your life back unless you use save states. Ugh.

Overall: 6.3
Overall, this game gets slightly above mediocre rating. It isn't bad, but it could have been a lot better. Such wasted potential. To summarize, the dinosaurs look fine (some great), but the bland colors of most of the environments drag it down. The music is freaking great, but there is a severe lack of sound effects. It is a fun game to play, but it really can get repetitive, and having to start all over after getting killed sucks. Though the story isn't super accurate to the movie, the creators did a good job at developing it using the movie only as a base. The depth, however, is bad. There is so little variety on things to do. The game is also pretty difficult just because of the little health you get, and the smallest dinosaurs can take a lot of it. Then there is the fact that half the boxes in the game blow you up. This is just a game that many have forgotten, or never really played before. It is a nice way to kill time, and who doesn't like fighting prehistoric enemies and blowing them up? I sure do!

Im confused where you say 'but very large dinosaurs like trex and tryceratops could be put in an early snes game'

You mean they arent proportional or?

So basicaly, youre collecting eggs from all the areas, it sounds like the 2nd book where the vilain takes 2 of each.

Those screenshots look more like dessert tbh.

I played a jurasic park on ps1 but you played as a raptor or something, for such a great film they've never made an equaly great game, i got a better dino experience from the ps2 king kong game, they should try another jurasic park game, it has potential.
(and by this point its apparent to all iv been perusing your thread list =p )

thenumberone : what I meant by that is the really large dinosaurs in the game had much better quality as far as graphics compared to the rest of the game. Those larger dinosaurs looked like they could pass on an early Super Nintendo game as far as graphics go.

And actually, they are making another Jurassic Park game for Xbox 360 and PS3. I don't remember when it takes place, but I believe the first one. It takes place on that island at least. Actually, I think it has already been released.

I never really got into the Jurrasic Park games...with the lone exception being the original Genesis title. That one was awesome.

This game is decent enough, it just gets repetitive quickly.

Good review though, I enjoyed reading it.

rcarter2 : Is this better than the one you gave me for Super Nintendo? It looks like the same game, only for the older NES. What are the differences?
